Nintendo's 'Fire Emblem: Heroes' grosses $2.9M in first-day sales

Japanese gaming giant Nintendo's second mobile effort, Fire Emblem Heroes, raked in $2.9 million in worldwide gross revenue after just 24 hours on sale, according to statistics released on Friday.




Metrics compiled by app marketing firm Sensor Tower suggest Fire Emblem: Heroes is off to a good start after arriving on Apple and Google's respective app stores on Thursday.

According to the firm's Store Intelligence data, combined worldwide downloads have surpassed the 2 million mark, bringing in estimated $2.9 million in its first day of availability. The estimate is substantially lower than first-day performances put in by Nintendo's blockbuster Super Mario Run, which grossed $8.4 million when it launched as an iOS exclusive in December, and the $10.2 million generated by Pok?mon Go last July.

That said, the comparison with Super Mario Run is a bit misleading as Nintendo requires a $9.99 in-app purchase to unlock the full game, while Fire Emblem uses in-app purchases for in-game assets like battle orbs.

Fire Emblem earned about 2 million downloads on day one, on par with Supercell's popular Clash Royale and slightly less than half of Pok?mon Go's 4.2 million downloads. Thanks to months of hype from both Nintendo and Apple, Super Mario Run clocked 6 million downloads in its first day of sales.

The report notes Japanese customers account for an overwhelming majority of Fire Emblem downloads, with the U.S. coming in a distant second. As of this writing, the new game sits in the No. 2 spot on the App Store's free app chart, and is already the online market's 17th highest grossing app.

Whether Fire Emblem has the staying power of its predecessor has yet to be seen. Earlier this week, Nintendo said Super Mario Run has been downloaded more than 78 million times since its launch, earning the company over $53 million.

    I wish these were iOS exclusive.

    ideally Apple would acquire the company but probably won't happen. At least not soon.

    And wasn't it the previous president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata who stated that porting their library and developing new games for other consoles and platforms would never happen while he was in charge and in doing so presided over a continual decline in sales from 2010-2015?

    In hindsight probably not his greatest decision...

    This game is really good and feels great on iOS. Nintendo and Apple are both sitting on the world's largest goldmine. If they can port the classics to be playable on iOS along with new content featuring the classic characters they will dominate the platform. The world will benefit from having the highest quality of games for mobile. I am very happy right now.

    I haven't played this one yet, but there is a huge continuum of free-to-play games.  I've played some for years and never paid a dime--games that no doubt make millions from less patient players.  Other games are severely crippled unless players make a regular stream of (usually small) payments.  The companies that can do the former--satisfy cheapskates like me and still make money deserve a lot of credit for finding that balance.

    Yes, one could play FEH without spending a cent. I have completed all stories (45 maps) in normal and hard mode, and currently halfway in lunatic mode without even buy a single orbs. It's easy to farm orbs, every time you win a game you are awarded one plus daily 2 orbs. Or perhaps I was just lucky during my first summoner to obtain 2 5-star heroes.

    This game is really fun and addictive. If you chose not to auto-combat all the way through, the triangle system really force you to think for better strategy.

    And the beautiful graphic is a plus.
