Im sure everyone has seen that MS commercial that ends with the tag line, "A Mac can't do that."
Everytime I hear that I think to myself, "But my iPad Pro can."
MS is demonstrating an app that plays video while the user writes notes on the screen with a stylus. The iPad Pro excels at this. Yet Apple hasn't taken this obvious opportunity to take advantage of it. I thought for sure they would.
My remark about the iPad Pro being able to do anything a surface can was in regards the overall power of the A9x CPU and the quality of some creation apps that have been very well designed to take advantage of gestural and stylus usage.
I compose orchestral music for film and TV. I use Notion iOS and can compose and playback entire large orchestral cues, and print out indivdual parts while on breaks sitting in a coffee room, or in my car. The gesture based iOS is spectacular at this. I wouldn't be able to be this mobile or work this fast with a MacBook Pro.
It even accepts wireless MIDI from my guitar through a USB dongle and the USB to lightening adapter. Amazing!
But my point is the mobility. Being the size as a small clipboard I can literally take the iPad Pro with me anywhere I want. I don't need to set my iPad down to work. In other words, for a composer's workflow which usually requires a lot of peripherals, the iPad Pro is so much more mobile and plenty powerful enough for iOS apps that are well optimized for a tablet.
If there aren't apps for your needs then of course, the iPad Pro won't do, but for my job the freedom the iPad Pro affords is practically a workflow miracle. My productivity and output has easily tripled.
I hope Apple continues with the Pro concept and adds features to iOS that will open it up just enough to enable a few pro user needs.
If Apple wanted to do something radical with the existing iPhone SE here is a simple 3 step plan:
1. Lower the price of the base model to $200.
2. Offer affordable data only cell phone plans (like iPad) with FaceTime for communications.
3. Drop the iPod Touch from the product line.
A March event would also be a potential opportunity for Apple to update its 12-inch MacBook with Retina display. That would be consistent with the last two models, which debuted in April of the last two years.
edit: It appears that AI meant to update the Macbook, not give it a Retina display. I interpreted it to mean that the MB didn't have a Retina display yet.
Shame, I was waiting for the next SE update for a better processor. Guess I'll have to stick with my 6s a little longer.
Definitely excited about the new iPad Pro 2, been waiting for that one as well!
Will be interesting to see if the mini is actually not updated. That is definitely my favorite iPad for reading and gaming. It's just the right size for gaming imo. If they aren't updating it and keeping up with the other iPads, it hurts gaming performance. I guess we'll wait and see.
? What would a new processor get you? A tenth of second response time?
The SE is designed as a "budget" (for Apple), entry level phone. To have it compete on specs with the high end phones defeats the purpose.
No. That is not "it's purpose". No. that is not what it is "designed as'.
Decades of conditioning have led consumers to think bigger = premium. It's everywhere. Size matters, they say. If you want people to think it's better, make it bigger.
The iPad Pro can do anything a Surface can do but Apple isn't telling anyone about it because they don't want to hurt MacBook sales, which I think is foolish.
It's not really being compiled as a binary that can be used on other devices though is it? And what if I want to write C for a microcontroller instead of Swift for an Apple device?

Do you have a link to back that opinion up? First I've heard of it. Apple has always been first to say "kill your darlings" and historically has had no problem cannibalizing existing products with new. Execs have commented on it, saying they'd rather have you buy something else from Apple than a competitor, so I'm really curious what info you have to the contrary.

The SE and 6s have the same CPU. Their performance specs are nearly identical. The processor in the 7 is not a huge improvement. Any noticeable performance increase for the SE will almost certainly wait until the September refresh.
The iPad Pro had changed my entire workflow for the better and not only does Apple need to be aggressive with its design, but also its promotion. The iPad Pro can do anything a Surface can do but Apple isn't telling anyone about it because they don't want to hurt MacBook sales, which I think is foolish.
If this is true, explain to me why I need to use iTunes on the desktop to get my personal video library saved to my iPad Pro? I love my iPad but until I don't need to use desktop iTunes it will never be a complete PC replacement.
Let me ask you this: where do you store your "personal video library"? I'm willing to guess you are going to say "my PC." That's how old school PC users held their content libraries, because that's how media storage was done in the past. But there's another place you can put your media: iCloud. If you don't want to "need iTunes" for media transfer, get it into the cloud. Or stay PC centric and tell us how nothing can replace a PC but another PC.

The iPad has outsold the Mac since launch.
So how does that sustain Nightwatch's assertion that Apple is trying to prevent MB cannibalization? It would seem to the contrary on the face.

I wish it weren't.
I wish it were just a smaller version of the flagship, for those of us who prefer a more manageable size.

For me, the 0.1 second improvement in response time isn't as much of an issue as the extra year before it's too slow to be useable and obsolete.
That's a good point, and one I look at closely when I buy. However, in this case there is another factor: SE with A9: $445/5 years = $89/yr SE with A10: $545/6 years = $90/yr
Aside from being a wash in real cost, trying to keep the SE completely current in specs kind of defeats the purpose of having an entry level phone.

Apple doesn't care if iPads cannibalize the Mac and the big iPhone cannibalizes the smaller iPads. Tastes change. Needs change. For all these people "worried" about cannibalization: don't be. Apple wins.

I get you.... As a runner, I carry my phone with me -- always. But lugging a 6+ around simply doesn't work well... I just got an IPad mini for use around the house which will free me up to get a smaller phone that works better during exercise.

I've been saying that Apple would like keep dropping the SE price until they had their first $199 iPhone. And I've been predicting once the SE dropped into the iPod Touch price range, it would finally be discontinued. Though I could see them dropping it up to a year before that happens to not only sell out of inventory, but push new device users up to the higher price range. Bumping up the memory to 64 & 128 helps them drop the price on 16GB even more, while also increasing their margins on the SE. I suppose a data/only plan would be practical for some individuals, but I can't see the carriers doing it. Most cheap SEs I'd see falling under a family plan anyway. But certainly a $200 iPhone would be ripe for a pre-paid plan, which could be used mainly for data anyway.
Apple should leave iphone SE alone and upgrade it next year with trickle down components upgrade. That time just add 128GB option. I love the Red color because I bought the Red iPod for my kids.
After scanning all the responses, I guess I am the last of the iPad content consumers. Finally, a rumor that includes an update to the iPad Air. Don't want to compile code or design anything. Just want a lightweight, big enough screen, speedy device to access content. Mail, websites, apps, occasionally AirPlaying Last Chance Kitchen to my TV, etc. Hope the rumor is true so that I can retire my original Air that had served me well until I dropped it on my hard tile kitchen floor and broke the screen. Repair at a local specialist got my screen back, but the home button is sticky and the magnetic cover turns off the screen when folded onto the back. And some of the touch screen functions are not quite right. Now I see why Apple refuses to repair them, but just swaps it for a "new" one. Come on, Air 3!

AppleTV cable deal? New Macs? Wireless CarPlay? Sure: I'll tune into that event.

Apple has options: Yerba Buena, the town hall at Infinite Loop, Flint Center.
