Apple Pay has today gained support from more than 40 new banks and credit unions in the U.S., inching the total of participating nationwide card issuers closer to 2,000. While Apple initially listed Santander among those banks, it was later apparently removed, with the bank indicating that support is coming this spring [updated].

The news comes less than two weeks after the last expansion, which saw 27 new banking facilities added to the list of institutions that support the mobile payment platform. To date, around 1,800 banks and institutions in America support Apple Pay.

Update: Santander Bank, a major international player in finance, was added to Apple's list, but the company apparently removed mention of Santander in a subsequent update to the page. For its part, Santander has told customers via social media that it expects to support Apple Pay this spring.

The following 42 banks and credit unions were added as official Apple Pay supporters on Wednesday:
  • America First Credit Union
  • American Bank & Trust Company
  • Ascentra Credit Union
  • Associated School Employees Credit Union
  • Banc of California
  • Beaver Valley Federal Credit Union
  • Bofl Federal Bank
  • Carolina Federal Credit Union

  • Washington Area Teachers Federal Credit Union

In December, it was revealed by Apple Pay chief Jennifer Bailey that 35 percent of all U.S. retailers now accept the tap-to-pay. She expects Apple Pay will be available in two out of every three stores by the end of 2017, as large chains like Gap introduce compatibility.

As well as expanding in the United States, Apple Pay is regularly updated with support for banks in other countries where it is operational, including Australia, China, Singapore and the U.K.

Recent launches in Japan and Spain also see the firm strengthening its lead in the mobile payment market by launching in additional regions in a relatively timely manner. At present, it's available in a total of 13 countries, with an expansion to Taiwan expected to happen soon.

Last week I used Apple Pay at a Sunoco gas station in Ohio.

Gas stations will be a huge driver of transaction volume.  Earlier in-app solutions existed such as Exxon Speedpass+, but the Sunoco solution works as we all want: an NFC reader in the pump interacts directly with your iPhone, no app required.

    Costco now accepts Apple pay!
I'm very interested.  Can you post a link with more info?

A quick Google search mentioned only an app Elavon... but not much detail about when, where, how etc.

I got a letter in the mail that said my costco credit card is ready for Apple pay.

    but maybe not at Costco?
Did you have new chip Citi Costco card? From my understanding, Costco will be installing chip readers for the new chip cards. If that's the case, the chip readers do have NFC so they would be capable of accepting Apple Pay.

I hope so. If Costco knows what's good for them they would accept.

This would make Tim Cook CEO of the year.

Another bank on top of another 40 yet Australian poxy 3 banks won't join. Anyone who ever visits Australia and opens a bank, choose ANZ. Period

    BOOM!

    Another win for Tim Cook.

    CEO of the year

Source?  I don't think they have announced this.  Last week I inquired and they said they are installing the readers this year and they are "aware of the strong demand"  for it, but wouldn't confirm.  Keep the pressure on, call or email Costco HQ.
