Dell Testing Sale Of Computers In Sears

Oh, here we go again! Dell is placing "a store within a store" at 10 Sears as a tests. The product will be there to test drive, but the customer will have to place an order on site or go home and order via the internet. Does anybody think Sears can really sell computers? Reportedly Best Buy and others turned them down. More info:

They probably will, but Dell seems like a much better fit at a place like Sears than Apple ever did. Dells can rot in a corner, get abused, not even boot, and people will still buy them because even with a $100 markup by Sears, they are just plain cheap.

The problem is you can't take them home. People go to Sears with their SUV's and expect to take most items home with them. In any event, it looks like Dell and HP-Compaq will be the only major PC marketeers by the end of this year.

That's exactly why I doubt it'll last long.

I don't know about that. Sears started off as and many people still think of it as a catalogue store.

Yup, but that was before the days of department stores, FedEx, online shopping...

Sears & Roebuck was *THE* mega-mall retailer before there were mega-malls... but now? They dropped the ball, and went nearly 100% brick-and-mortar, and then missed the online bandwagon badly. Sad, really, S&R was the only link to many goods that folks in remote rural areas had, for many decades.

Dell has been doing stuff like this off and on for years, they usually do okay but then get greedy and decide to take everything back in house rather than share margin with a reseller
