Baked Apple

I work at an Apple Authorized Retailer and we just had a lady come in to see if we could fix her PowerBook G4.

She walks in the store and comes up to me, "Sir, I've got a baked Apple". I laugh and she proceeds to take her powerbook g4 of the bag it was in. The top of the screen was a little brown and warped. I had my manager come up and look at it. He hadn't seen anything like that before.

The lady opened up the machine and the screen was all cracked, and there was not a single key on the keyboard. I finally had to ask the lady how all of this had happened. As it turns out, she baked the PowerBook in the oven for 20 minutes. I kid you not. She said it with a straight face, and I could hardly keep from laughing. She wasn't joking. The thing was baked. She also kept every single key. She told us that they popped off while it was in the oven and she dug through to save every one.

We told her that the cost of the screen alone would be around $1000 if not more, so she decided to leave the machine with us to discard of. Before we tossed it in the trash, I decided to try and power it up just for kicks, and it worked! The machine booted just fine! The screen is cracked and broken, but if you plug in an external monitor and keyboard it works like a charm. Ethernet, Modem, USB, Optical Drive, and HD all work just fine. I have already reformatted the HD and installed Mac OS 10.2.

    Aaron,

Great story! Maybe she would want the PowerBook back, though.

Wow. Was SHE baked when she put it in the oven? I mean, really, what could she have been thinking?

Maybe she was using it as a cutting board or mistook it for a baking sheet and had cookies or something on it.

So, what's she going to do about it? Pay the repair bill, get a new one, or go Mac-less?

edit: ah, I just read the other forum thread. No cookies, huh. Ah well, maybe she's just a ditz. After all, she WAS using Mac OS 9. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Did she use the Ti as the cookie tray by accident?

If you read the other thread, though, you'll see that he didn't find any cookie crumbs; so, it would seem unlikey that this was the reason unless she cleaned it thoroughly before bringing it in.

Recipe: Place TiBook for 20 minutes in oven at 400 degrees, and voila! You have an instant forum-thread starter!

I am expecting to see someone is cleaning up his/her PowerBook/iBook with the electronic dish washer

    That would be another classic

This sounds like that urban myth about someone whose husband runs away with another woman and calls his wife back to say "Sell the porche... send me the money"

And you see an ad for a porche in the paper for a dollar...

Maybe her CSP was caught sleeping with some other person (insert gender of choice to determine degree of anger needed to do this)

this would have been a few years ago, but so the story goes this woman finds out her fiance is cheating on her... with a guy (but that is a whole other story)

Anyway, this woman was understandably pissed off so she left her ex-fiances Powerbook 1400 in the cats litter box for about a month, she had three male cats.

    any questions?

My guess is that she spilled something liquid on/in it, rinsed it, and put in there to dry, not realizing that the LCD is really fragile to heat. (L = liquid = boils = bad.)

Why not let it dry slowly by just setting it on a counter and waiting? How stupid do you have to be to think you can bake your Powerbook.

Maybe she had some incriminating evidence on the computer and hoped to destroy it by burning the computer up.
