Amazon Echo Look and iOS app judges your wardrobe choices with machine learning

On Wednesday, Amazon expanded its Alexa family of devices with the Echo Look -- a voice recognition device with a camera tailored to snapping a shot of your outfit, rating it, and giving you alternate choices in conjunction with an iOS app.

Telling Alexa to "take a picture" commands the device to use a depth-sensing camera and built-in lighting to snap a shot of a worn outfit, and make a "lookbook" of often-worn ensembles.

The judgement is performed by the new "Style Check" feature which utilizes machine learning and human "fashion specialists" to judge an outfit in comparison with others. Amazon claims that the Style Check feature will get better as it is used.

Otherwise, Echo Look functions the same as the Amazon Echo. Amazon Echo's feature list includes more than a few similarities with Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana and Google Now, including support for online queries, voice-activated ask-and-answer functions and extensibility into mobile apps.

The Echo Look is available by invitiation for $199.99 from Amazon. The Echo Look app to use the wardrobe judgement features with the free-standing device will be free.

    You said it!

Huge privacy ramifications. What do you bet it'll start making product recommendations and product links.

First a quick listen (Echo), then a peek (Look), then it'll be a full-on panopticon. Beware Google, you're being out creeped by Amazon.

While I see no viable market for this product as advertised, how the fuck is a mic and camera on this device inherently less secure than all the mics and cameras you have throughout the rest of your house and on your person, potentially for decades now?

If it can't recommend what tattoo to get next, what good is it?

Hair style and teeth whiteness will also be evaluated?

I had to read the PR twice to be sure it wasn't a joke.

I can't wait for the SNL skits and late night talk show jokes roasting this.  It could be a running gag, with the host asking for feedback each day.

Personally I can't even imagine what sort of feedback this thing could provide.  "Your tie is too long; tie it differently"  "Your ripped jeans would go better with your Metallica tee"  "That salmon colored shirt is nice, but next time, try dusty rose."  "You appear to be naked."

This could easily pass as an April Fools, but unfortunately not. I'm sure it will be a hit with the narcissists and snapchat lovers.

ugh... bad idea. A machine that judge how I wear? A machine that think I am incapable of deciding myself on what I should wear? A machine that records and takes photograph of my body, my body size, the kind of underwear that I bought -  and then who knows whom it is sending those information to? Or worse bombarded me with the kind of undies I should buy instead? Bad bad idea.
