I believe Apple's self driving car ambitions will be rolled out in several phases.
The inital phase will will probably be: Apple tech + Lexus SUV + Hertz
While the self driving tech is road tested on a limited scale by Hertz, Apple can finish the design of the Apple Car.
The second phase will be: Apple Car + Didi Chuxing(China)
The third phase will be: Apple Car + Apple Ride sharing(Rest of the world)
Certainly sounds like something I'd expect too, tho I'm not yet sold on Apple designing and building their own car. There's so much that could go wrong starting from scratch and forming their own manufacturing and assembly facilities. I personally think partnered with a current auto manufacturer is more likely.

I think Hertz will be responsible for buying a Lexus SUV, installing all the hardware and software and then putting up the car for lease. I am getting a feeling that Apple is going to move pretty fast , they have been doing a bunch of things behind curtains for a long time now.

Don't forget their uncharectiristic large investment in the Chinese Uber, that alone tells me they got from that more than data.
That looks like they were testing systems far from prying eyes and regulatory fillings on tens of thousands of trips while Google was fiddling in their own cars.
Me: "If Apple pulls this off I'll probably sell my car in a few years."
Friend: "If Apple pulls this off then I wouldn't wait; in a year your car will be worth nothing."
I agree with a few here: Apple is not looking to sell you a car. I think they're looking to manage fleets of electric vehicles that will pick up and drop off on demand.
I have no no idea where they plan to charge and service them though.

Are you suggesting Didi Chuxing is doing autonomous driving tests in China without the rest of the world knowing? Surely the passengers would notice

Not if there is a "driver" in the car to babysit it. Those testings are usually done with a driver on board anyway.
They also don't need to test all functions at the same time. Maybe they're going for volume in sampling instead of breadth here ;-).
Like I said, this investment has been pretty fishy as only a a way to collect info: pretty unlikely if you ask me.

If they are taking passengers, they would definitely notice unless they specialise in transport for the blind. If they aren't taking passengers, I'm not sure why they would need to invest in Didi Chuxing. If DC can somehow get a testing license without making it public, surely a smaller, cheaper, less obvious company could do the same and Apple would barely need to announce any investment
Good lord the media needs to calm down. It's 6 vehicles. And Apple is leasing from Hertz. Hertz isn't managing a fleet of vehicles for actual rollout. Now if the news was that Apple is partnering with Lexus...well that would be a whole different story.
I doubt Apple would want to box themselves in with an exclusive deal like that you're suggesting would be news to be excited about
From the linked article it appears that the fact that Apple leased 3 SUVs from Hertz caused the Hertz stock to surge. That seems like irrational wishful thinking to me. There is no evidence or suggestion of any strategic partnership whereby rentals from Hertz would be self-driving and/or powered by Apple tech.
I suspect that Hertz is behind the news (but not without Apple's blessing), needing to answer the Avis announcement from earlier in the day. Both Hertz and Avis stock have suffered badly in recent years, but Avis got a very nice bump from their announcement, and Hertz stockholders should be a bit happier today as well as long as they cash in quickly.

I meant they could have a driver to babysit the automated car (faking a driveR)

And no way they'd let a passenger realize that they weren't actually driving, spinning that steering wheel like no tomorrow. They also won't let anyone else in on it, not family, not friends and certainly not any news media or gov't representative wanting to discuss it. It's a secret. They promise. LOL.
It be great if allegations weren't presented as breaking news, that red tag got me all wide eyed and excited that's some monumental shit just got officially announced, but alas another rumor, further confusing an already confused issue
You must be new here. "News and rumors since 1997."
Yes but his complaint is when the breaking tag is used on just another rumor, not actual factual news. One that’s been made many times in the past. Since this is only a rumor there’s nothing time-sensitive (breaking) about it.

But, of course, I'd want to rent a few times before I'd buy. Hertz is my go-to car rental company, so I can hardly wait.
