New video offers up-close look at 'iPhone 8' dummy

A video published on Wednesday provides one of the best looks yet at a supposed "iPhone 8" dummy unit that has been floating around the web, joining together an aluminum chassis and bezel-free front glass seen in alleged parts leaks.

Shared by OnLeaks in partnership with Tiger Mobiles, the well produced video shows close up views of what is claimed to be a replica "iPhone 8."

Steve Hemmerstoffer of OnLeaks confirmed the dummy unit is a CNC mockup manufactured based on CAD files he obtained, and subsequently posted to Twitter, in early April. Those same schematics were used to create a graphical rendering of the device in May, while some third-party manufacturers are already using similar information to build cases ahead of Apple's expected fall release.

Since the dummy unit shown off in today's video is based on months-old CAD files, there are no new design features to speak of save for a prominent Apple logo on the chassis.

The mockup's front panel is very similar to parts leaked earlier this month, with a thin black bezel and space for an ear speaker, front-facing camera and proximity sensors. While cutout positioning slightly differs from past parts leaks, the overall bezel design is in line with current rumors.

Though redundant considering OnLeaks' previous CAD leak, the video's producers pull out a pair of calipers to measure the dummy unit. In line with previous estimates, the mockup measures 144mm long, 71mm wide and 7.5mm thick. Counting the vertically-arranged camera bump, thickness measurements top out at 9.1mm.

Whether the dummy is an accurate representation of the device Apple is rumored to bring to market later this year remains unclear.

Apple is expected to debut an "iPhone 8" with 5.8-inch edge-to-edge OLED panel, front-facing cameras with 3D facial recognition and more at a special event this fall. The company is also working to embed Touch ID fingerprint recognition technology into the display, though recent rumors claim engineers are as yet undecided on a final solution. If below-screen Touch ID proves too difficult, the next-generation iPhone might sport a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Reports citing sources within Apple's supply chain suggest "iPhone 8" is facing considerable manufacturing hurdles due to its design and use of cutting-edge components. Most recently, Samsung is said to be having issues with OLED panel production. Previous reports speculated that Apple might announce the device in September and initiate a staggered launch a month later as production ramps up to acceptable levels.

Seriously?! Real or not, I think that's one amazing mockup and a beautiful design.

I know eh? So boring. Obviously Apple should have went with some weird ass shape just for the hell of it. Maybe a triangle or a hexagon, fuck practicality, usability, and logic.

They should have gone with a Möbius strip for infinite screen resolution.

Is there a video in the article? (I don’t see it on the stand alone article either...maybe an ios 11thing?)

Not enough sleep, huh? Always get 8 hours quality sleep before a hard day's naysaying.

A four-dimensional shape would significantly increase the surface area, although you'd have to rotate it along the fourth "w" axis to access those other surfaces, but think of the display space!

If they can actually pull this off–having a fingerprint reader BEHIND a screen without causing any disruption to the quality of the panel–then we’re heading right into the proper future. Apple would be lightyears ahead of the competition, some of whom are still using those stupid swipe bar fingerprint readers. If this is the design, I like that it’s an evolution of what we’ve had since the 6. That damn camera bump, though… MAKE. THE. PHONE. THICKER. Use that space for battery. Even the first-gen iPhone isn’t too thick, and its curve is beautiful in the hand. Since we’re apparently still stuck in 1999 when it comes to battery tech, get a longer charge by just thickening things up.

The non straight edge of the top of the screen just doesn't look like Apple design.

And yes  they went thicker with with the iPad 3 but super unlikely to happen with the new iPhone.

Hmmm, it still has rounded edges. Why, Apple? Why can't it have sharper edges for a little bit of grip and so it doesn't slip out of pocket when getting into the car?

Could be interesting if the entire front panel was the fingerprint scanning surface, allowing a person to touch anywhere, or even giving the option to restrict opening the phone with multiple fingers in combination (say... one thumb on one hand and an index finger on the other).

Imagine if it not only unlocked the screen but even then would only allow the authenticated user to manipulate what is on the screen.  So even an unlocked phone could not be used by someone else.

    That's an interesting idea.
