Apple stock hits all time high on news of strong Q3 sales, promising Q4 guidance

Apple stock prices hit an all-time high in extended trading on Tuesday, flirting with the $160 mark, after the company reported better than expected earnings for its third fiscal quarter of 2017 and strong guidance for the coming quarter.

In after hours trading, AAPL surged 6.1 percent or over $9 per share from the day's close at $150.05. Already the world's largest company by market value, the uptick left Apple with a market capitalization hovering above $800 billion.

The boost in stock price came after Apple turned in a strong performance for its third fiscal quarter of 2017, reporting $45.4 billion in revenue on sales of 41 million iPhones. As of this quarter, Apple has sold more than 1.2 billion iPhones, a watershed figure.

Healthy Mac numbers padded quarterly results, while iPad sales returned to growth for the first time since 2013. As usual, the company's services business continued to thrive and is raking in earnings revenue equivalent to a Fortune 100 company.

China was the lone blot on an otherwise stellar quarter, with revenue in the region dropping 10 percent year over year. CEO Tim Cook addressed the seemingly weak performance during an investor conference call, saying mainland China was actually flat year-over-year and up 6 percent on a constant currency basis.

Investors are looking ahead to the coming September quarter. The three-month period commonly includes initial next-generation iPhone sales, consequently boosting immediate revenues while offering a glimpse at what's to come in the lucrative holiday season.

This year, Apple is guiding for revenue between $49 billion and $52 billion and gross margin between 37.5 percent and 38 percent for its coming fourth fiscal quarter, big numbers even for the tech giant. The forward looking statement prompted speculation that Apple is indeed looking to launch a hotly anticipated "iPhone 8" in September alongside "iPhone 7s" models, bucking rumors of a potential delay.

The next-generation flagship smartphone has been all but confirmed by code discovered in an errant release of HomePod firmware. Analysis of the software this week revealed what appears to be a representation of "iPhone 8's" final design, confirmation of facial recognition features, screen specifications, potential tap to wake functionality and more.

Comments are not allowed on your previous article, but it must be said that your claim that Tim hinted at a "made in America" announcement are erroneous.

Tim broke down the way Apple creates US jobs into several groups. Developers, suppliers/manufacturing, direct employees etc. It was in connect with direct company employees that he said there would be something to announce later in the year - this likely pertains to corporate or retail employees, not manufacturing.

How long did it take McDonald's to sell 1.2 billion burgers?

Not stated here is that Hong Kong was the
laggard as its ties to US based currency (which is down) turned in a very poor performance.    The fact that mainland China was flat to up is actually a nice surprise.  Also the number stated as 10% decline in the region is slightly off because it was rounded up from a calculated value of 9.5% - only Apple is this conservative with their numbers....

Indeed the magic Guidance number the financial markets were looking for was $51 billion. The $49 to $52 portends minimal if any delays for the iPhone 8.

Woohoo! I'm going to go out on a limb and say we could possibly be looking at an intraday high of $170.

John Gruber has a couple of posts today on the HomePod firmware "leak", one of the links which goes back to AI last December.

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/16/12/20/supposedly-leaked-apple-document-pegs-three-iphones-for-release-in-2017-top-model-dubbed-ferrari

Looks like the code number for new high end iPhone is D22, and the codename "Ferrari", as confirmed by the "leak".

If the Apple's guidance is accurate, and why would it not be, most of the sturm and drang from the media regarding the new high end iPhone. aka iPhone 8, has been nothing but noise. Apple looks to deliver on time with no more than the usual delays for production ramp. Touch ID looks to be absent in favor of Facial Recognition, but otherwise, to expectations.

    Here's a link to the firmware release;

I'm not saying it'll end the day at $170, but momentum trading tomorrow could get pretty crazy.

We have no clue really if Touch ID is gone cause obviously its in IOS 11 to support well everything else.
It is not a either/or, both could actually be present and I expect leaks to occur very soon confirming or not this fact with a great degree of certainty.

    Nope.

iPhone doesn't need 2 biometric authentication convenience features. There is simply no purpose for two. Two would be excessive redundant engineering that otherwise impacts the design of the phone. Two would confuse the user.

Use your thinking cap. Apple wouldn't bother with Face ID if they are keeping Touch ID, and Apple wouldn't go through the pain of totally re-engineering Touch ID into a new phone that lacks a Home Button, if it already has another bio auth solution.

    It won't have both.

Any rumors of Apple employees other than executives benefiting from strong sales?

They benefit from strong sales to the extent those strong sales mean that Apple continues to need them as employees and may need more employees going forward. In other words, strong sales increase job security in general.

Beyond that, Apple has for some time had a generous employee stock purchase program in place. Essentially all employees can buy Apple shares at a discount and then benefit (further) from the value of those shares rising.

Additionally, a couple of years ago Apple made essentially all employees eligible for RSU grants and indicated that the vast majority of employees would receive such grants.

Stockholders are overjoyed. Employees are overjoyed that they can continue to have jobs. Suppliers are overjoyed their services will continue to be needed. Customers are overjoyed that good products are available for them to buy as an alternative to the commoditized garbage fire others offer. Everyone wins.

My thinking cap is pretty good as it is...Maybe use some other language in the future, thanks in advance...

They would bother if the use case is different, which is a distinct possibility; but, hey, it's just my 30+ years or engineering talking...Oh and a "thinking cap" (sic).

You go way beyond the available proof, especially considering the tack you are taking; scale back your assertions and maybe we can talk a bit.

Alright, so I was a little off. ;) There's still room to grow with this stock though.
