Unless there is some unrumored feature yet to be revealed there is nothing "Pro" about the AMOLED device.  The rumored 6.42" competitor to the Galaxy Note could be considered pro if it has Apple Pencil capabilities built in, but so far the "8" "X" "Edition" "whatever" looks like a much overdue evolution of the basic iPhone and is what Apple should have produced last year as the new 7.

Even calling the revised LCD phones based on a four-year-old design the 8 and 8 Plus is ridiculous.  They represent at least two generations of stagnation and are not worthy of carrying the flagship nomenclature.

I'm going to give credence to this rumor though as it is precisely what I would expect from Tim Cook.  Try and fool people by giving outdated designs a new model designation and convince them the new "Pro" model is something extraordinary when it is simply getting back to parity with what other competitors are already doing.
Complete nonsense post. You’re evidently under the misguided notion that what defines each generation of iphone is the shell design. If you actually owned these devices you’d know why that isn’t the case at all. As Ive has explained many times, they don’t do change for change’s sake. Let that sink in.

As for similar outward body designs, you’d better let Porsche know that their iconic 911 design is outdated as they’ve been using it for decades!

Then you can get back to us with the sort of sweet triangle-phones you expect Apple to produce.
The Porsche 911 may be iconic the current iPhone design definitely isn't.

I don't see many non-Porsche cars with even remotely similar designs. The same cannot be said for phones.

Phones are very limited animals when it comes to shell shape, hence the need for constant and simple change. In the fast moving smartphone world if you sit still from one generation to another you look stale. That is exactly what has happened to Apple and even Gruber agrees the current iPhone design has become stale. This not limited to Apple but the industry as a whole. The Samsung Edge design is also looking stale.

Manufacturers can offset shell shape to some degree by accentuating colour and finish but change is a must unless you're happy with people calling you stale, boring or whatever.

It might not be fair and the smartphone market is also a fashion market and fashion means constant change even if the scope for change isn't that great.

Again, it's time to stop numbering iPhones. The ones being announced on the 12th are the ELEVENTH iPhones. There might be an anniversary model, but it's still one that is ELEVEN iPhones later.

Apple changed the naming with the iPhone 4. There was NEVER an iPhone "2" or iPhone "3". The iPhone 4 was the FOURTH iPhone.

    1) iPhone
    2) iPhone 3G
    3) iPhone 3GS
    4) iPhone 4
    5) iPhone 4s
    6) iPhone 5
    7) iPhone 5s
    7) iPhone 5c
    8) iPhone 6/Plus
    9) iPhone 6s/Plus
    9) iPhone SE
    10) iPhone 7/Plus
    10) iPhone SE (2017)
    11) ... To be announced on September 12th, 2017...

Funny how besides the screen being close to a wash  Apple is ahead in all metrics, it is "behind" in your head. Just because you say something doesn't make it so buddy.

Is Porsche behind because they're models look nearly the same since the 1970s?

If anything, I'd argue the reason they put the OLED in is not even for its picture quality cause the latest LCD (which have higher luminosity and lower reflectance screens) are pretty much on par already in anything but low light conditions. The real reason is that OLED allows more variance in form factors, thinner panels and it takes less power (so need less battery space inside).  All that put together gives 1.5-2mm more inside to do whatever they want with it, maybe even making it easier to put an under screen touch ID detector or whatever they're doing next. Maybe it allows even to put a camera under the screen, who knows really.

Apple have not "changed the name". The Media invented the "iPhone 7s" and "iPhone 8" names.

Apple were never going to release a '7s' and an '8' at the same time!

"iPhone Pro" was a far better guess than "iPhone 8" for the higher tier phone.

The so called "7s" is actually a major redesign of the 7 which has been consistently misrepresented in the media as a "minor update".

I long argued for "iPhone Edition" because I think Apple need to kind of 'anti-sell' the constrained, high end phone. They need to send the message that the high end phone is not the standard phone for most customers. Calling it the "Edition" will achieve this.

My guess is also for iPhone Edition name for the OLED design.
    - The problem with iPhone Pro is that the phone does not have new pro uses compared with the LED iPhones.
    - As for iPhone X, meaning iPhone 10, that leads to confusion with having an iPhone 8 being released with an iPhone 10/X.
They could go the Watch route and go for Series. In fact, going the car route and go by model year. You can have the Iphone 2017, Iphone 2017 Series + and the Iphone 2017 Series E.   The E series could come up every year, or once every few years when you introduce new tech you can't roll out right away in the + series because of supply constraints.

Right now, Apple is constrained by the fact it needs to be able to produce phones in huge volume to introduce some techs later than they would otherwise would. The somehow mitigated that with the +, but by building a really out there phone when needed then could do it even better.

I keep hearing this. I have a 6S and am sceptical of I want to spend over £1000 on a so called Pro model which has a comparable screen to the S8 which can be had at half the price now! What does that leave me with? 7S which has the same 750P screen 4 years in a row? What incentive is Apple giving us 6 and 6S owners if we can't upgrade to the so called Pro which js exclusive to a new Pro customer base? Jobs vision was to make great technology available to all. Something Cook doesn't seem to believe in
They could not "upgrade" everyone because of supply constraints anyway. Supply is just not there.
OLED plants are being built as we speak so by next year there would be enough to cover the whole range.

Also, the Iphone 8 seems to have many different tech that go well beyond the screen.

Jobs didn't have to deal with having to sell 80M phones in a quarter (that happened after he died), so your declaration is kind of a non sequitur.

There are real world manufacturing constraints at play here; Cook has to live with them if they don't want to produce really crappy products.

Everyone knows the C in the iPhone 5C stood for Cheap so it makes sense that the new attractive OLED iPhone will be called the iPhone 7SEX with Apple in home escort service delivery.

Only Apple knows for sure right now. It makes sense to use iPhone 8/8 plus for the new lower end iPhones. These are actually major upgrades. I like the iPhone X name. It differentiates from Samsung naming and it also indicates a new generation of iPhones starting on the 10th anniversary.

I think Steve Jobs was the one who named the Mac OS X. It could be a tribute to him as well as the tenth anniversary of the iPhone.

if you think the difference between a samsung and iphone are in the screen size...then go get one, please.

As for Cook, i have no idea what you're talking about. Entry levels are all cheaper today than under Jobs. you are not entitled to top tier for free.

Why is it not the standard phone? Because Apple can’t produce enough? Or is it a status thing; Apple saying only certain customers (i.e. those with $$$) are worthy of the Edition model?
Jesus. If a device is component supply constrained and you can’t scale it to the insane sheer masses that iphone has now achieved, then you raise the price to decrease demand. This is economics 101. Stop trying to project some pretend morality narrative into what is really a very simple matter.

I know youve read it but apparently you need to read it again:

    https://daringfireball.net/2017/07/speculation_on_new_iphone_pricing
So it’s going to be called iPhone Edition because Apple can’t produce enough? What happens next year then when they can produce at scale? I’m sorry but iPhone Edition is a stupid name. But so was the solid gold Apple Watch Editiion yet Apple still sold that so it won’t surprise me if we get a 1200 iPhone Edition that is priced that high purely due to the OLED screen and materials it’s made out of. I can hear the Jony Ive materials video already. ;)
i never once mentioned what the name would be. no idea what you're on about. we're talking about why there will be a more expensive model.

iPhone 8, 8 Plus and the OLED version called the Edition or Anniversary. Then next year an upgraded Edition/Anniversary will get the iPhone 9 moniker, with a larger screened version of that becoming the iPhone 9 Plus, and so the cycle continues...IMO

I've been highly skeptical of the two-series release this whole time. Nice to see a common sense rumor on this for once.

Im not sure why some Rumours generators think that just because Samsung has come out with a Phone and Phablet with a 8 in its name Apple also has to change the way they name there more successful iPhone line, as if Apple had to aline its Phone to how Samsung dose it. If that was the Logic why not call it 10 Like Huawei or Essential because Apple Phones have always been essential. Or make the New  exclusive Vertu edition with a lots of Bling im sure if you make it really expensive and get Some A-Grade Stars to flash the new Special edition selling for 35K$ (the watch edition went for 17K so the Phone should cost double that) you could be sold out all year round. Make it Special Special only invites get to buy it.

So im expecting a iPhone 7s and a iPhone 7s Plus and a lot of disappointed rumour mongers when Apple bings out the new Red-herring edition. Remember the teardrop iPhone 5 and how Apple Stung those that thought that Apples NDA were Advisory and not Mandatory.

I still don't understand why iPhone 8 is being thrown around at all, the last time Apple didn't do an S model iphone(and only) was in 2008 with the 3g, now if they maintain the 7 design, it will certainly be a S model, but if not, they might do away with the model number and just go with a naming scheme(like the iPads), but I doubt they will try to assign iPhone 8 to multiple designs like this rumor.

Sorry if my point wasn't clear.  What I'm saying is that if Apple are justifying the price increase (and in the UK it'll be £1000) due to new screen technology then that doesn't hold water with me.  My other point is that I dislike the idea of a 3 tier range of iPhones.  Only the so called Pro gets the latest and greatest tech, while the 7S and 7S Plus stay with the same 4 year old design.  Like you point out it could be due to the massive OLED shortage, but I'm assuming Apple have had years to plan for this.

As I stated in my post as a 6S owner I won't be upgrading to either the 7S or 7S Plus.  I don't want to enter into another 2 year mobile contract with a mobile which has potentially a 4 year old design.  This just leaves me with one option to purchase the 8, which will be in limited supply and potentially £1000 in the UK.  Unlike most on this forum I'm just a normal iPhone user, I don't own a Mac just a 6S and an iPad Pro.  So my thoughts echo alot of non-techie iPhone users who are upgrading from a 6 or 6S and find the non 8 upgrade options rather uninspiring.  (BTW I'm a GP (Doctor) so buying the 8 isn't a problem, it's just hard to justify spending £1000+ on a mobile)

Likely iPhone Pro since they are adding the "Pro" moniker to pretty much everything else (eg. Macbook Pro, iMac Pro, iPad Pro, etc.). Also considering this is the 10 year anniversary of the iPhone, it would make sense. Guess we'll just have to wait until next Tuesday to find out.

No hidden meaning, it's just a nice name.

Well, that's just silly. If that was the only thing that will be different, then I would agree with you. But it's a virtual lock that this will not be the only technological difference.
