Apple's Phil Schiller & wife donate $10M to Maine's Bowdoin College

Apple marketing head Phil Schiller and his wife, Kim Gassett-Schiller, have together donated $10 million to Bowdoin College in Maine -- a school their sons Erik and Mark attended, the latter graduating this year.

The money will be used to build a "dry" lab connecting to an existing marine lab for Bowdoin's coastal studies center, as well as a "convening" center with housing, classrooms, and dining facilities. In exchange, the coastal studies center is being renamed to the Schiller Coastal Studies Center.

Schiller and his wife can be seen in a promotional video, where they talk about the importance of the environmental research involved and some of their own related experiences.

Schiller rarely enters the limelight outside of Apple's press events, where he shares the stage with people like CEO Tim Cook and software and services head Eddy Cue. His role at the company has made him a wealthy individual, and he's sometimes called upon to address minor controversies, such the fate of the Mac mini or the development of the original iPhone.

Can't wait for critics to scream at them and tell them they should've given their money to hurricane victims, the homeless, the overweight, solar panels for the depressed, some bizarre favored political cause, etc.

Sounds like a great donation to me (altho they're already a fairly wealthy college, particularly for their size, over a $B in endowments). I've always had a special fondness for Bowdoin.

At least they're not donating to the Red Cross....That would be a waste of a donation.

It's not a good idea because it's their money and they are free to spend it, waste it, set it on fire... whatever they want to do with it as they please. They don't owe anyone excuses for their choices.

Every action reveals   something about the person behind it.  They made it a public donation.. they could have kept it anonymous and avoid opinions.
No they dont owe anything to anyone..
Sure they can smoke it if they like...
But  the idea is who needs it most at the moment... and why they made that choice at this time...

i just happen to be on the side that that money could have been put to a better use at this time.

You didn't have to wait long.

When I see remarks that somebody donated to the 'wrong' cause or 'didn't donate enough' I always wonder just how much the complainer donated or what they did to make an impact on the World Condition.

And I always suspect that it is/was next to if not— nothing.

what does that mean? whats wrong with the red Cross?
Good question. He speaks as though the Red Cross provides no services and therefore deserves no money. He's clearly (lol) got his head up his ass. For it's faults, the Red Cross still manages to do a lot of good. I've seen it first hand.

So, a wasted donation? No, that's pure bullshit.

I see this is turning into a referendum on "worthy" or effective orgs and causes. Just because this is publicized doesn't mean they haven't donated elsewhere such as Red Cross, other Houston recovery, etc. Donations this big do take a lot of time to cultivate. It's not like it would have happened and they said "nah" to Houston and "oh, hey, Bowdoin" instead. But don't mind me. Just thought I'd add that comment.

This looks like the Rich donating to the Rich to be richer.
A rich private college gets millions from a rich man.

Sorry but this money would be much better used in Houston.
Because the RedCross takes 10-20% of your donation and they're only going to help people in shelters. Sure, its temporary relief that they do need, but its nothing compared to the amount of money people will need to rebuild to last the rest of their lives. There are better places that use 100% of the proceeds and help others out in better ways.

Maybe it could be better used in Houston, but its better being in a better charity.

You have to understand people like @yojimbo007 as they don’t think like the producers of this world do. In their minds money is a community asset, not a personal one. So the community gets to decide where money is spent, how it is accumulated, who gets some, who doesn’t. It’s a disease called socialism.

You do NOT have the right to an opinion on this matter. It’s not your money, you didn’t earn it, and you certainly don’t get to decide how it is spent. So just shut your pie hole and keep your ignorance and stupidity to yourself.

He could cash in all of this Apple stock he likes to brag about and donate it to a charity that will help out Harvey victims....or maybe Irma ones after this weekend.

Somewhere in the world, there is always a few wars, crisis and disaster. May not be in US but somewhere. I know American don't give a fuck about the rest of the world, unless there is oil or something important. But someone somewhere is suffering. In your theory, people just can't donate as their wish.. Because someone is always suffering. For example, some refugees in Middle East are facing much worse situation than the hurricane victim.
Also he is smart and rich enough to make his own decisions.

Seems like Phil's been working out and skipping the buffet table.  Maybe he can get Jony to join him.

Houston Hurricane - is that the result of climate change? If so then maybe the best money is toward education and prevention.

If you follow the Copenhagen accords then there are many causes that if funded have a greater impact on world peace and reducing human suffering. The value in a donation isn't just the amount, but rather the impact given the money spent. Part of that impact is whether you are satisfied with your donation.

It is nice that they donated after their child  graduates - it eliminates any perception that their child did not earn all their honours on their own merit. Very classy!
