Nearly 1700 Aldi grocery stores gain support for Apple Pay contactless payments

iPhone and Apple Watch users shopping at Aldi grocery stores can now check out with Apple Pay at nearly 1,700 locations across the U.S., marking a significant expansion for Apple's tap-to-pay service.

Beyond the iPhone, Aldi's expansion also includes Android Pay, meaning most anyone with an NFC-based payment system on their phone will be able to check out conveniently without swiping or inserting a credit card.

Payment terminals at checkout will also support contactless bank and credit cards, as well as NFC-enabled wearable devices like the Apple Watch.

"We're continually innovating to provide our customers a faster, more efficient shopping experience that saves them time and money," Aldo Chief Executive Jason Hart said. "Shoppers love ALDI because we build and run stores they can shop quickly. Contactless payment makes shopping at ALDI that much faster and more convenient."

As of 2016, Aldi had 1,602 stores across the U.S. Recent expansions have brought the chain close to 1,700 locations in America.

Apple Pay support has gradually expanded since the feature launched on the iPhone 6 nearly 3 years ago. One recent popular addition was the Citi Bike bicycle sharing service in New York City.

The capabilities will further expand this fall with the launch of Apple Pay Cash, allowing for person-to-person money transfers direct from an iPhone or Apple Watch.

Editor's note: Aldi originally said its stores also accepted Google Wallet, but that was incorrect. This story has been updated to remove references to it.

Ha ha does this include the 50-cent deposit on your shopping cart?  Last time I was at Aldi there were 3 people gathered around the shopping cart dispenser trying to figure it out.  (I just carried a bag in with me ... & the checker-outer wouldn't even put my groceries into it.  DIY as-much-as-possible)  Cheers!

One thing you NEVER see around an Aldi store is wandering carts in the parking lot.  That simple 25cent deposit works wonders to get people to walk the short distance to return their cart, lock it to the others and get BACK their 25 cents.

We really like Aldi for a lot of items and shop there pretty much weekly so Apple Pay will just make it all the better!

Until now most of the places I shop didn’t accept Apple Pay, but Aldi is my #1 grocery shopping choice, so this is great. Now just need CVS, ATMs, and gas stations. If they get those my card can disappear into the back of my desk and be forgotten.

You know what else you never see at Aldi? More than two people working the checkouts.

Wait, I thought Aldi didn't take credit cards.  Is this a change that also allows them to take credit cards, or is it only via Apple Pay?

I have an Aldi about 30 miles from me, and I haven't tried them yet because cash gives me hives and I can't remember how to pay with a cheque.

<edit> Never mind, they started taking credit cards LAST YEAR and I'm a loser.  Sorry for the bandwidth waste.

Don’t feel bad, I logged in to ask the same question. The last time I shopped at an Aldi (maybe three years ago?) they were still a cash-only business.

I avoid shopping at places that don't accept it.  Now its:
    Trader Joes for Food
    Walgreens for drugstore stuff
    Sheetz for gas.

Yeh, I stopped shopping there years ago just for that reason:   it was either cash or debit card -- and I will not use either one.

But I might give them a try again...
...  But, since I stopped going I've switched to a much more healthy diet.  I hate groceries that make you walk a gauntlet of junk food to get to the healthy food (if they even have any).

Trader Joes (which is owned by Aldi) has been good:  it takes ApplePay and it has lots and lots of healthy food and not a lot of junk food -- and it doesn't force you walk past the junk food to get to the real food.  And, the prices are pretty reasonable.  But Aldi was always cheaper/cheapest.  I'll give it a try!

I'll stick with Wegmans thank you! They've been taking ApplePay pretty much since day one!

Maybe it's just a US thing. Here in Australia, they've always taken credit cards, but add on a surcharge (don't remember what it is, 10% feels familiar, but that's way higher than anywhere else does. 2% to 5% would be more typical). I haven't tried Apple Pay there, partly because of the surcharge, and partly because they don't usually have what I'm looking for, so I don't tend to shop there anyway.

Ralphs/Vons need to get on the Apple Pay bandwagon in California.
If anything, using apple pay is so much faster than the stupid chip card that they must see it is a time saver at the checkout. How many times have you seen people
    - swipe the chip card instead
    - not removing it while the card reader beeps at them
    etc etc.

Is Aldi in the US the same as the Aldi in the UK... you go in to buy some toilet roll and catfood and come out with a petrol strimmer, patio furniture, a 60piece dinner set... none of which you really needed but it's in that crazy bargain middle aisle.

    LOL!

That's Aldi in Spain too. They have some very nice food lines though. Their sesame flavoured humus is very nice.

    Always accepted card payment AFAIK.

While we still have the "middle aisle," in my experience it's not quite so jammed with bargains as you're talking. Admittedly, my exposure is limited to a half-dozen locations in Northern Virginia.

That said, I go nowhere else for staples like baking supplies anymore.
