Thank god for "the man."

I guess my request for a discussion was denied, sorry, I guess the man doesn't like to be questioned.

[Please note I have no issues with the admin's response to my post about a Newton forum, just that it was locked afterward to prevent anyone else from getting a last word].

The lock button is easy to hit

You're right, so is the big red one that launches the bombs and kills us all, but regardless in times of discussion both are extreme ways to end a disagreement and I would have liked something less rash.

It has always been my opinion that AppleInsider and MacNN had "Suggestion" forums so that they could get feedback but they didn't HAVE to respond. That way they still stay head and shoulders clear of us and don't have to feel a need to explain their actions ...

Like shutting the place down for months.

Like locking all sorts of threads in the first week the boards are back up.

Like leaving no explanation on many of those that are locked - Props to Jonathan who did leave explanations in most that I have seen by him.

Like posting and then locking a thread to ensure getting the last word.

Fact is AppleInsider has always been a dictatorship, but back in the day when I joined Mark gave me a very different impression of mods and admins. He was respectful, helpful, and consistent.

Right now I feel like someone really wants to make sure we know our place, maybe that is just because I have a conflict of interest with them over the Newton forum, but look through the different threads - if you had just reopened a message board after six months would you close that many threads with explanations like "this discussion is off topic," or no explanation at all [this does not reference those moved to different forums]?

It's just a signal that the issue is closed.

    Request denied, so to speak.

Hey, it happened to me, too.

Yeah, I know, thats basically what I think the BS part of it is, I get the impression that gorgonzola doesn't have interest in Newtons and therefore doesn't care whether there is desire on the boards for a Newton forum.

So now access is denied to the hidden forum? Cute, you guys never had to share your sandbox did you?

Well anyway there were some links posted in there, and I kinda need them ...

Helloooo? Is there anybody out there?

The thread was locked to signal that the issue was over, and I clearly explained our motivation to not include a Newton forum. Not making every single forum you desire and locking a thread to signal the end of the issue is hardly a dictatorship, and I think your words are just as severe as you perceive our actions to be.

If you require further explanation, post away, by all means! Frankly, calling this a dictatorship just because I locked that thread is complete and utter bull. In fact, I took the cue from the other admins, who seemed to have established the policy that once an issue is closed, the thread is locked. That isn't how I handle these threads at MacNN (in fact, I respond to the vast majority of them, and Suggestions threads are never locked), but MacNN != AI and whatever policies Jon, Nick, and Steve decide to implement here are the ones I try to adhere to as well. They run most of it, after all.

This thread seems mostly directed at me, since I closed your Newton thread, but for the record, I haven't locked or moved any threads except that one, and I had nothing to do with the hidden forum. If that's disabled, you can talk to someone else. =P

If you actually have something more to say regarding the Newton forum, and you're not just whining about the one and only thread I locked, feel free to post; I've reopened the thread.

    gzl -

Regarding dictatorship - I never used the word although past admins and mods have used it to describe AI themselves, their view of it was albeit a positive one - all depends on the side of the coin you are on I spose.

Regarding the thread closing - Thank you for reopening it. I personally do think there is there a valid reason for a Newton forum and I realize that others do not. I would like to look into the matter reasonably and you are making that possible again. Thanks.

Regarding the lost access to the hidden forum - Fair enough, since you didn't disable it I won't gripe at you.

Regarding locking of suggestion threads - I am afraid I might have proved this myself but locking a suggestion thread sends the wrong impression, in the rest of the forums it seems like more of a governing action, here it seems like more of an iron fist. I agree with your personal policy at MacNN about not locking them.

This post is just for you basically and if you want to lock this one up so that it doesn't get carried on feel free, I won't bother anyone about it.

    As Always,

    Bogie

I just want to be clear on a few things:

    1) We haven't decided to not have a Newton forum because we personally don't have Newtons; instead, we simply don't feel that it would be used enough to warrant adding it. One great thing about these forums is they are simple with only the basic topic categories. I think glz has explained this very well in his posts in the Newton thread.

    2) Please don't attack glz because he is being the liaison on this issue. If you have a problem with something around here it is with the AppleInsider Forums Staff, not one person. Let's try not to get personal on this matter.

    3) We are listening to your posts and reading each one. Just because we do not necessarily agree with you does not mean we ignore your posts. I'd say glz's fairly long posts prove this.
