digital hub forum

I'm posting this as an extension of the original idea about the Newton forum.

Whilst that was nixed, it seems to me that there may be some merit in establishing a "Digital Hub" forum, which seems to be where Apple is heading nowadays.

This forum could encompass devices which add functionality and productivity enhancements to your Mac...

iPOD

Newton

digital cameras

digital video recorders

PDAs

etc. etc. etc.

It might start off encompassing 3rd party gear, but once Apple starts rolling out more h/ware and s/ware combinations, we could then decide to dedicate it to just these Apple branded peripherals.

Any thoughts?

(EDIT: I used thread where I should have used forum in a few spots...oops!)

I think that that may be a good idea, but only if it includes other consumer electronics like TVs, receivers, etc.

Those topics are currently in AppleOutsider but probably don't belong there.

Perhaps that could replace the Games forum?

I think a DH forum would be good. Even though I am not a gamer.. I think the gaming forum should stay.

I have only used the gaming forum a couple of times since I have been here but I don't see a reason to replace it, people seem to like it.

I didn't intend it to replace the Gaming Forum... I seriously believe it's worthwhile devoting a forum to it exclusively.

I see no reason to ax Gaming, but it's an interesting idea; give me a few days to think about it.

only reasons I can see is that

1.) it is relatively low trafficed

2.) if a digital hub forum is created gaming hardware (nintendo, xbox, etc) would go in there

3.) games themselves would be software

4.) don't want too many specific forums

then again maybe it is best to keep game related material in one place

Forums are so subjective. More I think about this whole thing the more I think that the reasons for a new forum are just as much reasons against it and other forums.

Like the fact that Gaming is low traffic. Well, it is, and if we got rid of it something else would be low traffic, so then get rid of that? Gets silly pretty fast.

The idea that if we had a digital hub forum that gaming could be split between that and software doesn't work because right now it could be split between hardware and software.

And so it goes ... I wanted and still want a Newton forum because there is only a minority that use Newtons. Without a forum the threads die to fast to go anywhere. People can not get their tech support needs solved and the like.

When it comes down to it that is really my only reason for a Newton forum because as is we really don't need anything beyond:

    Current Hardware/Software

    Future Hardware/Software

    Suggestions/Mod-Admin.

    Tech Support

OS X? Its software. Gaming? Its software and hardware. I just want a Newton forum so that when I post "Hey my 8600 with AppleShare IP and NCU 2.0 freezes while syncing with my MP2000U someone answers and I get help.

There are my thoughts, good or bad.

what's wrong with the tech support forum?

To take one part of your point:

    [quote]OS X? Its software.

This is a gross oversimplification. There is such a huge amount of discussion on Mac OS X that no BB has been able to handle it without creating a dedicated forum or forums. When over 50% of the forum is on one topic, it's time to make a new forum.

I'm not sure about Gaming. I think it's low-trafficked, but not so low that we need to kill it (e.g. the old Developer forum at MacNN). I'll think about that; you definitely have a point.
