Should AI become a message board only site?

Forgive me if this has been discussed recently, the idea just came to me when i returned to the boards after a week's hiatus.

The fact is that the front page of AI is dead. Even if the admins have some stories planned, the impression given to new visitors is that the site is stale. Ironically, behind the stale front lurks a vibrant message board community.

I worry, however, that we are losing potential new members who are turned away by the cobwebbed front page.

I think it would be a great idea if the message boards were made to be the official focus of the site, with rumor articles, if/when any appear, being linked, as a sort of 'bonus' for the message board users. A 'value added' message board site, so to speak.

What do people think?

i think you are right, it's always strange to go to a dead front page. It would be better to go directly to the forums , or a front page of forum presentation with some links for rumor articles when they exist and the recommandations for the good use of these boards.

I think that's what should've been done in November when AI came back.

I don't really see any need to worry about the lack of new members being attracted.

we have nearly 3000 now. it has increased by several hundred over the past month.

it seems like people still manage to find their way here. if anything we get a "higher class" of mac user than some other boards. Maybe because we are sort of a hideaway

But it does suck that AI as a rumor site is no more

Naa leave it as it is. It´s kind of fun to be the hidden message board. If it was changed we would have to change the name too.

Perhaps we could use the front page for other things. Like let talented AI´ers borrow it for a week to show their HTML/design/whatever skills. Perhaps it wouldn´t´have taken Lenois so long to be "discovered" if he had had the front page to show his skills. Let macintosh have the first slot *duck*

I dare anyone to be the first to ask their loved one to marry him/her.

The number of member names may have increased by several hundred over the past month, but I think there are around five actual members behind those names.

<img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> Good call, Belle! For the record, I'm one of the five actual members. I won't say how many hundred user names I have. j/k.

Sounds like a good idea to me - the lead page is dead - put it out of its misery, sez the Blue Meanie...

But we still haven't caught up to the Good Olde Days, when there were over 8000 registered users... and 6 actual members.

what about having the normal (stories) front page, but put a very emphasis on the forums. Like a split screen, ie:

    ------Welcome to AI

    -------Latest Story

    -------2-3 Recent story headlines

    -------AI Forums

All this on the same first opening page.

Same here... why are the popup ads back?
  • Reply 18 of 18
The ad provider put those in without our explicit approval earlier, and we've filed for their removal, but they're extraordinarily slow at processing those applications. It'll be another few weeks before they're entirely gone...

Sorry, but it's out of our hands at this point.

Oh yes, and this goes for MacNN Forums too.
