Google quality assurance continues to struggle with some Pixel 2 XL shipping without Andro...

Some users are finding that their brand new Google Pixel 2 XL phones are arriving -- but without an operating system installed, necessitating a return and replacement.

The Pixel 2 XL started shipping to customers on Oct. 29. It is unclear how widespread the problem is at this point -- but multiple accounts of the problem have appeared on social media and other venues.

The Android absence on a new phone is the third problem with the Pixel 2 family of phones, and the fourth quality assurance-related problem that Google has suffered with in a month. The first quality assurance problem was an issue with the Google Home Mini, the second was the OLED screen burn-in, and the third was reports of clicking from within the Pixel 2.

Preview Google Home Mini hardware distributed at assorted release events had a serious flaw that caused the device to listen in on every noise generated in a house. This problem has since been permanently dealt with by a firmware update disabling the touch-to-activate button on all units, pre-release or shipping notwithstanding.

In October, Some Pixel 2 XL review units showed faint ghosts of navigation buttons when a gray background is onscreen. Burn-in is an eventual problem with OLED panels, but it's rare for devices to begin displaying it within only days of use.

The Pixel 2 XL uses a 2,880-by-1,440 pOLED display instead of the 1080p AMOLED found on the regular model, which could suggest the source of the defect. LG's pOLED, based on a plastic substrate, is extremely compact when compared with LCDs or glass-based OLED.

A class action suit regarding the display flaws in the Pixel 2 family is currently in the investigative phase.

The click was generated by an issue with the near-field communication circuitry, and a firmware fix is incoming.

So glad I wasn't tempted to get this. Very poor showing so far, even if some of the issues might be overblown. When you have a high profile like Google it's to be expected that even little problems will get major press. Welcome to the world of smartphone production Google. :/  Hope it's worth it.

Google both horrifies and amuses at the same time!  It’s like one of those scenes Stephen Spielberg is so good at but, you know, without all the actual popularity and success.

Always the problem for company which doesn't own both hardware and software.

By next year perhaps they'll be closer to the hardware/software ownership. This year they were still far too reliant on LG and HTC.

They are not a hardware company and don’t sweat the details. They defer a lot of there responsibilities to their Hardware partners and those guys aren’t thorough enough nor have sufficient resources (quantity and quality).   Remember their hardware partners live on razor thin margins. You get what you pay for.

Seen this happen hundreds of times and I’m not surprised.

Finally, a genuine 100% fully secure Android OS ever!!  /s

If this were Apple, the entire Internet would erupt and be demanding Tim Cook's head.  Where's the outrage here?

The Cleveland Browns traded for Cincinnati’s QB AJ McCarron, they then celebrated but forgot to call the league office to finalize the deal by the trade deadline.

Oh this is too rich. The trolls here are always parroting from their playbook “Apple’s QA has been going down hill since <insert reason>”

But this isn’t getting ANY press elsewhere. It’s being generally ignored like the Pixel 2 and its faulty OLED screen that Google is telling users is normal.

While I completely agree that the higher the profile (mindshare) that you get the larger a minor problem appears. However, not shipping with an OS seems like a pretty big QA gaffe. That along with other issues doesn't look good.

That said, these issues are fixable and they do keep making better smartphones, but the real proof of their expertise in this field is getting much higher unit numbers with even fewer QA issues per unit on average.

And it's quite the opposite. They may have more units with issues than in previous years, but their per unit issues are considerably lower than before. But then you have the media latching onto that mindshare and magnifying any tiny issue into a major one because Apple news sells attracts eyeballs which sell ads, and bad Apple news attracts even more eyeballs that sells even more ads.
