I can take the phone out of my pocket while pressing the Home button on the way out. So, it's ready when I look at it. Plus, I don't have to "swipe up" to get to the home screen.
Honestly, I can't see how Face ID is supposed to be faster and why does it even matter? Face, fingerprint. Same to me. I don't see anything special, it's just different.
I completely agree. I don't care about the speed, I care about the convenience and to me TouchID is way more convenient. I'm more likely to pull the device out of my pocket with my thumb on the home button so it's unlocked before it comes up to my face.
Fact: you must look at the device to use it, and by that time the X is unlocked too. It doesn't make two shits difference if your Touch ID iPhone is unlocked first *while moving through the air*. You must still look at it. And with the X, that act of looking at it unlocks it. It's the same either way.
AI is delusional on this one. Touch ID is still WAY faster than Face ID for now. Face ID also requires a second action to unlock the phone (swipe up) that makes it even slower. First attempt accuracy also seems to be lower than Touch ID.
After a week or so of use, I like Face ID quite a lot. It's generally fast, and appears to work well in the dark, when wearing cap/beanie etc.
The only significant (and at times quite annoying) downside that I've come across is that the phone has to be somewhat closer to my face for Face ID to activate than I tend to by default. Ie, I will often pick up the phone and if my arm is somewhat outstretched I will have to move the phone closer to my face for Face ID to operate. Granted I'm tall, and hence my arms are probably somewhat longer than average, but this would be my only quibble.
Hopefully it's something that can be a addressed via a minor software update if others experience the same thing.
“Works most of the time.” That’s a phrase I’m reading in other reviews also. Well, “most of the time” isn’t good enough. It has to work EVERY time or people will simply abandon it. If you have to repeat the process a second time once in a while that’s going to be be a problem. But let's assume that the AI involved will learn and get better with time.
TouchID fails all the time for me. Sweaty fingers, dirty screen, gloves in the winter (just doesn't work), I cut my thumb a few weeks ago and had to use my left hand for a week to unlock my phone. I can't wait for FaceID.
Thanks for letting the world know which digit you use for TouchID. Instead of choosing one from ten it is now only one from two. You have made your phone a whole lot less secure. May I humbly suggest that you disable TouchID right now.
Can you tell us from experience how well Face ID works if your head is stuck up your ass?

That isn't actually true. My phone has a dedicated button which in my case is assigned to a voice recorder. It can have different actions assigned to different presses if the button.
I can unlock the phone and activate the recorder without looking at the screen at all. If the phone fails to unlock there is haptic feedback so I know what's happening even without looking at it.
Another very common example. If I want to check to see if I have any notifications, I can unlock the phone and pull down the notifications panel right from the fingerprint sensor. There is no need to be 'looking' at the screen. I could be watching TV and have the phone at a very offset angle (laying on the sofa or even in bed). It can be at an extreme angle. If there are no notifications, the phone stays where it was and doesn't get in the way.
