(I wish It was the A11 but they won't give that to the SE)
    What do you wanna bet?
It will be A11 or derived from the new architecture.  People forget the breakup with Imagination.

While we dont know the specifics we know that Apple gave warning to Imagination.   Im not sure when this first became public information but significant time has passed so i dont see much   Left of of the two years.

    That's a really interesting point.

I was just going off the fact that Apple basically never releases new iOS hardware — even "low-end" devices — with old tech. The iPod Touch gets state-of-the art because it's gonna sit on the shelf unchanged for three years. And why on earth would they follow up the two-year-old SE with an upgrade that's only one year better? It makes no sense.

But yeah, that's an even better point.

[edit] That is, if there's an SE 2 at all. The rumors are coming from sources in India that don't have much of a record one way or another, we're not reading Kuo Ming-chi's tea leaves this time around...

I think the one thing Apple really needs to do is put the smart connector on all iPads. From an educational standpoint, it would be a godsend as bluetooth keyboards are a huge pain in the ass and one of the biggest downfalls of using iPads in K-12. Many schools cannot afford to get iPad Pro's just to get the smart connector and Smart Keyboard.

Still A10 is mostly AppleIP execpt the GPU. So what would stop them doing an A10 with Apple GPU keep it 16nm process if that keeps the cost down. That would give them one standard chip across the full update of second tier products.

    Edit to Add:
Remember that the US dollar has been historically low for the last few years and is now on steadyish improvement. Apple sets thier prices in US dollars for a world market so as the  US dollar improves the productions cost effectively go down.  In that climate they only need a few other raw production cost saving in order to drop the base price significantly.

    1. The cost of a chip is mostly R&D. It's true that a 16nm might be a little cheaper to produce than 10nm, but the real cost is R&D and that's already paid for.

    2. You're proposing spending even *more* money on a new chip design, when Apple is already incredibly resource-constrained.

    3. a newly designed A10 chip would only be good for about a year's worth of new products. It wouldn't even be six months old when the A12 chip is released, the idea that Apple would still be making new devices off a three-generation old chip in Fall 2018 is ludicrous.

Products that could be on the shelves  for 2-3 years with little R&D cost as noted. Would give them a non-bionic option for products where it doesn't add the product value.

If they could do this while reintroducing either the antireflective coating or the laminated display, it would be a godsend and a fantastic deal.

Both would be amazing, but reducing the price at the same time as doing both seems a stretch.
