This week on the AppleInsider podcast, Neil and Victor talk about 2018 iPhones, what's rumoured for next year from Apple, and iOS 11.2's surprise release. Victor also talks with Katie Stephens, founder of MakeCrate, about how to encourage interest in engineering.




In our latest episode, AppleInsider editors Neil Hughes and Victor Marks discuss:
  • AirPods could be a huge hit in 2018. This doesn't come as a surprise to Neil, who is still a little anxious about AirPods falling from his ears.
  • Katie Stephens, founder of MakeCrate.club, joins us to talk about encouraging future engineers and making Arduino-powered engineering kits for ages 11 and up.
  • LG is hinting at their being a supplier for 2018 iPhone with OLED displays
  • We talk about forthcoming hardware, including the iMac Pro model number. We're running out of 2017 for Apple to still make the release date they had announced.
  • There's a rumor that Apple could use a metal frame for the rumored LCD 2018 iPhone. Neil and Victor don't think very much of this rumor.
  • iOS 11.2 was released in a bit of a rush over the weekend- it had release notes indicating ApplePay Cash would be present, but it wasn't until Tuesday that Apple Pay Cash actually turned up. We talk about why this was necessary, and go into a little detail about how Apple Pay Cash works.
  • Catcher, an Apple partner, appears to be working on a project that could be an AR headset. Separately, Quanta, an Apple partner, is making lenses for Lumus, an Israeli AR company. Watch this space.
  • Amazon Prime Video comes to Apple TV 3rd, 4th generations, and 4K devices. It's good, but we notice there are some interesting things about it. It's got some bugs, and some unusual behaviors for an Apple TV app - it feels very much like it Amazon are making one build for all platforms, rather than having one build process, building for multiple device targets. That is, this app doesn't just imitate the app that runs on consoles and other devices, it IS the same app with separate UI code.

    Can't say I don't like the podcast. It's not bad at all.  But it is highly, HIGHLY annoying when one of you is talking and the other cuts in with a thought but no one wants to back down so you both keep talking at the same time, in essence telling the other that you're not going to stop till your thought is complete.  How about just not cutting one another off. Courtesy plays better over audo (podcast).  Quit the annoyingness <-- I know it's not a word. :smile:

    Fair point, but I'll note that we are not recording in the same room (let alone the same state). So the whole "talking over each other" thing is sometimes a lag issue, sometimes a miscommunication issue.

    And sometimes, (not always, but sometimes) it's a clock sync issue. Clock sync drifts the longer we record, so our responses can be perfectly interleaved at the beginning of the show and be off, talking over each other (even though we weren't) by the end. I make several cuts to adjust it back into line, and I appreciate your patience with it as we record these.

    Oh wow... had no clue you guys were not in the same room (or state)! Well, that explains it. Of course, from time to time in conversation we interrupt one another. That's natural. I just have a peeve when one participant in a convo appears to think they have a point so great that they cease listening to the person talking, cut them off and refuses to stop talking until that "great" thought is complete. It's a peeve I have in any conversation setting - not just your podcast. But when that happens (at least seemingly) in your podcast, I find myself shouting out loud, "SHUT UP DUDE! LET THE GUY FINISH HIS THOUGHT!!" lol.  At the very minimum, it shows that I'm really into the show and am listening and interested in what you guys are saying, right? : )   Thanks for clarifying.  Keep up the good work! I'll catch you on the next podcast.

    Thanks for listening! Victor is in Raleigh, and I am in Brooklyn. An awkward, lag-induced, “sorry, go ahead” exchange doesn’t make for ideal podcast fodder, so sometimes in that situation you try to push through with your thoughts. And then, as Victor said, sometimes the service we use (Zencastr) has a sort of “drift” where our individual recordings get out of sync. The end result is it sounds like we are talking over each other when, in fact, we were not when we recorded. Victor spends his time editing and fixing these issues, but it’s not easy!

    Thanks for bringing Katie on... that looks like a really neat service and I love her intentions to push it into other areas of education (ie: physics). Bravo!
