    Here's another vote against them.

Even with size restrictions, there can be speed problems with loading them in a page. What if someone's host server for their image is down or really slow some days? That'll slow the load time for every page that person posts in. Also, consider that with 40 posts per page, your browser will have to go out and contacts as many as 40 different servers to grab everything. Assume that more than just one of those 40 servers is slow or down and it will add up to a much longer load time.

Also, I agree that in most cases avitars uglify the forums.

    Er, whats an Avatar? :o

I'm guessing some form of animated graphic but I'd be interested to know for sure. Anyhow, they seem mighty controversial.

An avatar is a little picture that goes underneath your nickname when you post a message. They're supposed to summarize your personality, etc. etc.

Personality, I hate them, and I have a modem. Even if I had broadband, I still wouldn't want them.

Aren't signatures enough for you people?

I have to agree with Jonathan completely.

I will stop posting here if they incorporate avatars.

They clutter up the clean, zen-like state of the board. I'm on dialup. The pages already load slow enough. I don't need them to load any slower.

And I freaking HATE vBulletin. UBB is your God.

    Spart. MacAgent.

Could you please explain why you hate vBulletin?

If we can assure you that it will retain the vast majority of AI's current "style" then what else do you have to complain about?
