Actually the PIV mobile chips are very much a temporary fill in until they can get a successor (Banias) out the door due to power and heat issues. The PIV is not a mobile chip even after the tweakings made so far.

It will be interesting to see how much the processors neuter themselves in the name of power conservation.

I think it was more than just tweaked a bit. Intel would not pop desktop P4's into notebooks. PC manufacturers would not tolerate poor battery life over speed. The reviews would kill them. I am sure there is an enhanced MP4 coming out (which is a trend you see with Intel), but this new P4 is definitely optimized for mobile use.

Here is one of many articles about the launch (with a link):

"The mobile Pentium 4 and the accompanying 845MP chipset offer the performance benefits of a desktop Pentium 4, but tailored for mobile use. An enhanced version of Intel's SpeedStep technology, for example, slows down the processor when the laptop is running on battery power, while another technology makes the system use less power when in sleep mode.

The 845MP chip set is similar to the 845 chip set used in the desktop Pentium 4 system. It includes a 400MHz processor-system bus, Intel's NetBurst architecture and supports the DDR (double data rate) SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM) memory type. Intel first detailed the new chip set at the Microprocessor Forum last year.

Yea it will...not to mention the fact that it will have crud for battery life, run Windows, and be slower than a P3 at the same GHz...I think running Windows is the biggest drawback. I mean come on, its like an anti-feature.

    A MOBILE P4 1.6 GHz outperforming a Dual GHz G4?

    Scary.

Can anyone provide some historical perspective? Other than the Amelio tenure, when were Apple's prospects more ominous?

Good lord, I was laughing at the thought of it. There's no way a mobile P4 at 1.6 GHz will take down a Dual GHz G4 tower. I was laughing at the fool who said the P4 laptops would outperform the high end PowerMacs.

And how are Apple's prospects ominous? Let's see, they have the hottest selling desktop on the market now, the iBook is selling by the 100s of thousands, they're sitting on over 4.5 billion in cash, OS X is almost fully mature... I really don't see Apple's prospects as "ominous".

The mobile G4 will get a nice bump in the next few months. Everyone just keep your pants on for cryin out loud.

You can add to a loyal customer base that no other PC maker has.

But don't forget if they fall too far behind in the processing power race, all of Apple's other advantages become academic. Apple can only get away with charging a premium for their machines if a segment of the population believe them to be worth it. If the performance gap becomes larger, fewer people will be willing to shell out top dollar for a slower machine.

    Processeurs Intel®Â* Pentium®Â* 4-M 1,6 and 1,7 GHz

512 Ko cache Pipeline Burst L2

    Front side bus 400Mhz

    Bus AGP 4X 266 MHz

    Nvidia Geforce 4 Go

    Firewire

    Ata 100 60Go hardrive

No this is not a desktop computer but the latest Dell LAPTOP specifications.....

And we are still crying to get DDR in the PowerMacs.

The Tibook is stuck at 667 with an almost one year old video card (launched in march 2001)

There is a big problem with Apple!!! And they say that they are satisfied with their current line up??

Please give me a break, Apple software are great but their hardware line up is a joke.

Yeah, and it's said to consume only about 30W "only" (seriously!).

If you spend less time getting work done with the faster processor, how is that disadvantageous to a much slower processor doing the same work with marginally higher battery life?

Well, a lot of people just don't use their laptops for nuclear explosion simulations or as portable renderfarms, and neither office-type stuff nor programming maxes the processor for significant amounts of time (well, unless you do a full recompile every 10 seconds...).

This is starting to sound like late-2000 all over again.

"Apple's is falling too far behind."

"Apple is going to lose the pro market."

    "Apple hardware sucks."

    BLAH BLAH BLAH

    We've heard it all before.

People just need to be a little patient. Everyone knows that Apple can surprise us when we least expect it, like at MWSF '01 when everyone was expecting 550 or 600 MHz PowerMacs... and we got 733 + SuperDrive, iTunes, PowerBook G4.

Don't think for a second that the PowerMac and PowerBook engineers are sitting around twiddling their thumbs. As I said earlier, since we haven't seen a true next gen PowerMac (or PowerBook) for over a year, something is definitely up and is coming soon.

Speaking of engineers, how many does it take to run Dell?

Answer: 2. One to call Intel and one to call Microsoft.

"Compaq" and "bad ***" just don't go together in the same sentence. I'm sorry but Compaq laptops just plain suck.

And I'm not just saying that for the hell of it. I used to work at Staples and I was around them all day. Plus, a friend of mine used to have one and it was constantly giving him trouble. Needless to say, he bought a TiBook and has been happy ever since.

Edit: BTW, the 2800 model is $2600, not $2500. Only $100 difference, but still.

Sure it can't touch the Ti on quality, but from a tech perspective this thing rocks!! It is fast, mobile, and puts most desktops to shame! You are right, I misspoke the price. I actually think that this bodes well from the PB point of view. Between this and the new Dell 8200 (although it weighs the same as my mother)the next rev Ti will have to be a big leap to stack up. I beleive it will, and I for one will trade in my mother for one!

I really wouldn't worry about the next TiBook.

The 7445 is ready to rock.

hey , I wouldn't turn my nose up at an 800 MHz 7445.Can they really put L3 cache in a notebook? Probably not, and no one else has it. At least they could have something a bit better than the current ones (which would be really sweet with higher res, 800 Mhz 7445, ATI Radeon 7500/GeForce4 Go). That would really make me want a Ti.
