Samsung confirms 'Galaxy S9' launch for February 25 by teasing changes to the iPhone rival...

Samsung will be revealing the 'Galaxy S9' on February 25, the South Korean electronics giant has confirmed, with the video posted to Twitter teasing a major change to the rear camera, one that leaks suggest could be the use of a variable aperture imaging sensor.

The post to the Samsung Mobile Twitter account confirms the date for the 'Unpacked' event, which will be held just before Mobile World Congress, the Barcelona-based trade show. DJ Koh, president of Samsung's mobile arm, previously revealed the firm's first flagship smartphone launch would take place around the time of MWC, but didn't give an exact date for the unveiling.

Samsung does typically hold a launch event alongside MWC, usually at an event separate from the trade show itself, with the Galaxy S-series of devices as its main focus. Last year, the Galaxy S8 Unpacked event was instead held in New York in March.

The 16-second video and the accompanying text in the tweet give minor clues as to what to expect from the launch of the device, believed to be named the "Galaxy S9." The video itself features the number nine, strongly suggesting Samsung will continue its numerical series, while the words "The Camera. Reimagined." point to photography-related changes in the upcoming device.

A leak from January 18 depicted what is believed to be part of the packaging for the "Galaxy S9," describing the rear camera as having a "Super Speed Dual Pixel 12MP" sensor with optical image stabilization and two apertures: F1.5 and F2.4. Though this does not indicate the use of a dual camera setup on the rear, the presence of two aperture figures could mean that the one sensor and lens arrangement will be able to switch between the two aperture sizes.

The listings also mention a "Super Slow-mo" function, though without any description of how it would compare to existing slow motion video functions in other modern smartphones. On the front is an 8-megapixel autofocus "Selfie Camera," but again it isn't known if this is a typical front-facing camera with a slight rebranding or one providing new portrait-related features.

Other specifications the "Samsung S9" is expected to have include storage starting from 64 gigabytes and growing to a rumored 512 gigabytes, 4 gigabytes of memory, wireless charging, AKG-tuned stereo speakers and earphones, and either a Qualcomm Snapdragon SDM845 or Samsung's own Exynos 9810 processor.

The packaging also indicated the use of an iris scanner for security, but with no mention of a fingerprint reader as a secondary authentication method. While Samsung has tried out alternative means to check the identity of the user in the past, this apparent removal of a fingerprint reader echoes Apple's decision to leave Touch ID off the iPhone X, in favor of using Face ID.

Mark my words, these hacks will also introduce a “Samsung X” model because they are that derivative.

They almost certainly will, it's been rumoured that the foldable phone will be called the Galaxy X since at least 2016.

I was leery of procuring the 64GB iPhone X due to the storage, but figured coming from 16GB 5S, I'd be golden. And ... I am. 512 GB in the cloud era is insane overkill for all but most extreme use cases ... and if I had an extreme use case, I shore as heck would not be buying a Galaxy turdsicle.

Best feature of Galaxy S9/+ is moving rear finger scanner below Camera from pathetic on side. I would say let's call it Galaxy S8/+ 2018 model and call a day.

Did you know that Samsumg phones accept external memory cards for extending storage? Yes you can have 512G in your phone - not in cloud. Have you seen any iPhone having that? Try to use music from cloud when you are in mountains away from infrastrructure and no Internet. Designers in Silicon Valley need to brealk their shell and start seeing that not all electronic device use scenarios are in super-duper tech loaded places like Sillicon Valley. Some are off grid sometimes when even phone feature does not work.... yet you need that electronics for other purposes. I can imagine some techies taking that picture far in mountain and not having enough space and no cloud access.

The access is slow compared to internal mem and it provides ingress to the phone (making it less water tight and yes, Samsung is overselling its water tightness as been proven in actual testing). You can buy a phone with 512G on it if that's what you want and that can actually be used for apps and systems tasks unlike external storage (look at the mem stats on external vs internal for Apple to see the diff).
    Considering
Just buy a wireless hotspot, connect whatever storage you want to it, a ssd disk even, and a battery pack t power it (solar array to charge it even on your backpack) and you are good to go forever and can serve your your whole group with centralized storage and network server. You do know you have to find a way to charge your phone in the boondocks like everest base camp.

External storage is indeed slower than the main storage, but more than fast enough as a local cache for e.g. music, photos.  I am travelling on a regular basis from Brussels to London on the Eurostar.  A local cache is very handy on such a trip.  In the chunnel there is no coverage at all,  in the country side in UK, France and Belgium the coverage is not reliable, and every time you cross the border, it takes 5 minutes to switch to the new telecom operator.   An external storage has its real life use case and can be very handy.
Your example of a wireless hotspot + battery pack + SSD disk is of course a ridiculous idea compared to micro SD card  in terms of the easy of use, weight and space constraints in my backpack

If it's knowable, Editorb is all over it.

If I'm in the mountains, I'll listen to music I downloaded onto phone, or iPod Touch 2G, or 60GB iPod. Or ... I might just enjoy being in the mountains without listening to thrash metal or punk.

No need to go without. As long as you have room for Warrior Soul's 'No, No, No' you are covered. And if you can fit in 'Last Decade, Dead Century' you probably wouldn't miss the rest. :-)

Love the punk vibe in Warrior Soul's metal stuff.
