A new report claims that the "iPhone SE 2" is coming at some point after the "Field Trip" event, and not only will be produced exclusively in India, but the global launch is being delayed by the India government for reasons unknown.




A report by Tekz24 on Friday morning claims that the "iPhone SE 2" will be a "Made in India" smartphone, and all assembly will be performed by Wistron in India. However, the report also claims that the "Field Day" Apple event on Tuesday will not see a debut of the new iPhone because of a shift "due to government policies and some other restrictions."

Many factors in the report make little sense. An educational-focused event is more likely to debut new iPads and Macs, rather than an iPhone, so it was unlikely that it would be featured at the event. The fifth generation iPad debuted in 2017 with no fanfare, so it is possible that the "iPhone SE 2" would debut in parallel, but it seems unlikely given Apple's past history with iPhone launches.

Additionally, at present, the global supply of the iPhone SE is produced in both China and India, and Wistron's factory expansions in India to grow manufacturing are still more than a year out. Apple has only recently taken to diversifying its production lines with the expansion into India. It seems unlikely that it would assemble the device in the relatively low-capacity India Wistron facility, and allow so-called "government policies" to stand in the way of a worldwide product launch.

The report also claims that the "iPhone SE 2" will come with the A10 processor, and 2GB of RAM, with 32GB or 128GB storage configurations. When the iPhone SE launched, it had the same processor as the iPhone 6s -- the A9. If that trend continues, the "iPhone SE 2" should have the A11 Bionic, as debuted in the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

The India-centric Tekz24 first started talking about the "iPhone SE 2" in August 2017. It also believes that the new device will grow the iPhone 5/iPhone SE form factor to 4.2 inches, will have a glass back, have design features similar to that of the iPhone X with a notch, and will cost around $400.

It isn't at all clear if the device exists at all. Conflicting rumors have come out of the supply chain ranging from an imminent launch, to a postponed launch like the latest report, to the device not going to launch at all.

    Unlike China, Indian government agencies direction/decision like weather, constant change. No clarity of what is good for the country people. But, bribe does get job done.

    Disagree.  If the trend continues the iPhone SE 2 will the features / processing power of the iPhone 7 which is exactly what the report indicates.

    Most rumors on sites like AppleInsider, MacRumors, etc. end up being false anyhow, perhaps upwards of 97% of them are inaccurate.

    The percentage of actual rumors that end up being true is very, Very, VERY small.

    In fact, if you read an Apple related rumor online, the sanest course of action is to automatically discredit the rumor and treat it as false. The odds are more in your favor that way and that way you'll have fewer disappointments when Apple makes their announcement.

    I would love for AppleInsider to go back five years and evaluate every single analyst's report and rumor that they published and then rate them as to accuracy and then also summarize by source.   Then keep that analysis up to date with each new report and rumor and when publishing a new report or rumor from the same source, quote the previous rating.

    Most Asian, African, & South American countries are incredibly corrupt. Don't expect it to change anytime soon.

    Depends on how you look at it. If Apple's doing a two-year cycle on the SE, then putting in last year's processor doesn't make a ton of sense. We don't have a large sample size obviously, but when the SE launched it had the flagship's processor from six months prior -- the A9. 

    We'll see, I guess.

    We keep internal documents on this kind of thing. Nobody has ever been 100% right, and when they've been mostly correct, they haven't been able to sustain it over a long period of time. Additionally, if you look back at the rumors, the whole picture is told in retrospect if you take a piece here or there, and put it all together to make a coherent whole.

    Apple wants all of their iPhone to function, look and operate the same.  The SE2 should resemble the X!  The SE goes back to the iPhone 5, going back to 2012!  We are in 2018, 6 year old functional technology!  Why make it a budget phone?  Get the SE2 model to be a premium iPhone!

    Unless it's using a new chassis and new unique components, then there isn't going to be much trace of it in the component supplier reports at all. They could be building millions of them unnoticed (wishful thinking) using parts assumed to be for iPhone 7/8/X.
