at the apple education store, there is now an instant rebate of at least $50 in addition to the regular student discount on everything but the new imac.
Explain for us again how it is you logically equate a $50 rebate with (clearing the channel for new Power Mac an Laptop products)? We have to assume this is what you mean, otherwise why post this news at all? Have you checked other major Mac retailers for similar "inventory clearing" tactics. How about the regular Apple Store?
What's interesting is that this applies to students' and teachers' personal purchases, but not institutional purchases. What it does is bring the personal purchases down to the institutional price level. Usually (I think) channel-clearing starts with the institutional purchases.
The pessimist in me thinks that this is just an effort on apples part to steer customers away from the troubled imac. With this rebate the pb G4 is under 2 grand. I think they are looking for some breathing room with the huge amount of backorders they are carying
Possibly, Mike D, but if that was true they'd extend the rebate to non-education customers. I think Apple's just realized that its educational discounts weren't very good before. For most customers, paying for shipping and full retail was cheaper than paying the discounted price and tax. This sort of evens it out a bit.
To build on your point though, since the iMac might have production problems. Apple may be forced to update its other products at Macworld Tokyo to energize its sales figures.

I got a call 2 days ago from a lady at the online store who offered me 100 bucks off of the already education discounted PM933 and then called her back to ask if I could get the ed. instant rebate as well...she said yes and it brought the price to $1971!!!!!I am so close...so very very close

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, the details of the Education instant discount promotion is called "Springtime Savings" and runs from March 7-31. A link on the right side of the education store goes to the details.

with my student discount from the Univeristy of Wisonsin, a new iMac would run $1,749.
my mom's educational discount for being an elementary teacher brings her to $1,749
however, my wife's discount for being a student at the U of MN brings her to $1,690
weird that we both get $50 off, and she gets $110, but i wasn't about to complain.
she could also get the loweset end model for $1,207. man, that's getting really cheap.
apple has some pricing quirks.
edit: oh yeah, and i could pick up the 933 for $1,985.
