I'm still confused about this lineup. I don't understand how they're going to market the mid-sized LCD model in comparison to the other two. It appears that it'll have slightly thicker bezels, but what other differentiating factors will there be that separates it from the OLED models to the average consumer? I don't think most people are going to know or care about the difference between LCD and OLED. Plastic body like the 5c? :)
The LCD model is rumored to have a single back camera, no 3D Touch, aluminum frame instead of steel, the aforementioned larger bezels, and the usual segmentation in storage and maybe SoC. It will look less “pretty” for lack of a better term.

No 3D Touch stings imo. That maybe implies no Taptic Engine, or a lessor version of it.
I know it’s there and I hardly ever use it. To each their own but I’ve met very few people that use it. I would imagine it doesn’t impact the average user. If they leave it off, they must think the same thing.

You are right on that one. I use that from time to time.

How will they market it? Um...as the cheaper large iphone. Not everyone will want to shell out $1,000 plus for the large OLED iphone.
s/ I want to call it right now!... Goldilocks! The rumoured 6.1 LCD iPhone would be not too big, not too small, and just the right price! And maybe just in a gold finish to emphasize the Goldilocks designation! /s

It’s just the opposite for the phones though, the bigger phones are the best sellers, by far.
I don't think you can neglect a product line with little more than a processor bump in four years and say, "see? people don't want these."

Apple says they were "surprised" by the demand for the SE. Surely an SE with modern design, screen and feature set would sell even better still?

If there was some evidence that it was a big seller when if first came out, then yes. But we don’t have evidence for that. We just have report after report saying that the smaller, less expensive models don’t sell nearly as well as might be thought. It’s a very vocal minority. Of all my friends, whether the have Android or iOS, only one has a small phone, other than the two old fogies who still have flip phones. I had 16 guys at my home Friday, and still, only one of them had an SE.

The Taptic Engine will probably stay as haptic feedback has been well received as think. I think losing 3D Touch stings because it is an input method, it should have been made available across the entire product line, not be used as a feature to segment products. Same thing with the Touch Bar. All input methods that require developer support should be made available too all devices.

It’s really ok that people don’t use it, just as it is ok for people to not use function keys, meta key combos, and the like. As an additional input vector, it would expand functionality for apps and people who know about it. That’s no different from function keys and meta key combos. Apple should be it more discoverable through a specific button design or indicator for 3D Touch though.

Here's my anecdote: everyone in my family (tech-savvy nerds), and most of my friends (NYC software developers) use SE's. A couple have moved on to X to have "the new shiny" but wish they were smaller.

Don't think they're legit - you gotta have lots of holes for several sensors. I only see two holes in each panel notch.

Might be counting on the fact that there is a large portion of the population that doesn't want their stupid phone to get even bigger.  There is no phone in this lineup that my dad would even consider using and I'll be forced to buy the 5.8" just to have the smaller sized device (and it's slightly bigger than my current 4.7").  It would be nice if they offered more differentiation on screen sizes and came out with a high end phone with a slightly smaller size.

Their designers should be forced to hold a baby and use the phone at the same time for a week or two before releasing a larger screen.  And they have to pay for it every time they drop it...

If you are holding a baby and trying to text or Facebook or whatever I have no suggestion for that. Maybe put the phone down finish with the baby and then resume what you were doing with the phone?

You are and your crazy ideas.

By the way I think the image is being misinterpreted.  I don't think the LCD screen has thicker bezels, rather the other screens now have thinner bezels.

I don't like small phones but believe there is huge demand for them. I'm optimistic that the SE could see an update.
I'm not sure what you consider to be "huge demand", but I'd be willing to be that it's not huge at all.

Not including it on a new phone would signal that Apple doesn’t think it’s important. Wrong signal to send especially if the decision was just a financial one. If Apple no longer thinks 3D Touch is important that’s a shame and shows they didn’t do enough to promote it and make it as useful as it could be.
Ah yes, it's always Apple's fault. Bad Apple.

That's a bunk claim, because pre 5.8" there were no 5.8" sized phones to compare sales to. But now that there are both small and large phones, the sales data (presumably) is telling Apple that the bigger phones are much bigger sellers. How small phones sold in the days before larger phones to compare to is irrelevant.

Evidence that the small phones sell well after the large phones came out.

when something first comes out, those whom want them buy them quickly, but then sales die down.

except that you aren’t telling the truth.

Who else should be responsible for informing consumers of subtle features of Apple products?  But who is saying "Bad Apple."  I think the comment was "room for improvement in certain areas, Apple."

I don't see why lack of 3D touch stings. My Apple Watch has it and I don't use it; in fact it's a PITA. The watch faces keep changing themselves when it detects a long/hard press from my hand when I don't mean to be doing it. My iPhone 6 doesn't have 3D touch and I don't miss it a bit, and don't even want it on a new phone. When I upgrade, I'll see if there's a way of disabling it.

I've become addicted to the ability to move the insert cursor around in text by doing a force-press-and-drag on the popup keyboard.  I wonder what percentage of users knows that that's available.
it's available to ALL in iOS 12 - long press on the spacebar and the keyboard becomes a trackpad - a feature I used daily and missed when I downgraded from my 6S.

Bless your dad and his vision. Personally my eyesight welcomes the larger phone. I am also not a small person so my 8 Plus fits my hands just fine and the extra screen is welcome in my use case.

That's weird, given that text is the same size on the larger phones, there's just more of it. Unless you bump up the type size, which the SE can also do.

With the non-release of any kind of SE 2, I was afraid I'd have to bump up a size this fall, but iOS 12 beta is so damned fast on this thing that I'll do just fine for at least another year on the SE. Hopefully by then someone at Apple will remember that the best-selling iPod was the Nano…
Same here, bought an 2nd hand 64gb SE for £50 as a stop-gap until September but after installing the iOS 12 beta I'd be happy with this for another year if there's no new SE sized phone. It absolutely flies on iOS 12 and does everything I need.

The LCD model is the middle-sized phone though. If it were the smallest, then the marketing delineation would be easy.

Nobody should be forced to hold a baby. :)

The average consumer would be confused as to why the smaller OLED iPhone is more expensive than the larger mid-sized LCD model. Yes, there is a larger OLED model than that one, but that doesn't solve for the other two.
