17" iMac at Macworld Tokyo?

Just read it in the latest issue of Macwelt, Germany's biggest Mac monthly, usually reliable and serious. They also mentioned a possible 933 MHz processor in it.

I think not, Aple are haveing trouble meeting demand for the 15" iMac as it stands, shiping dates have gone from March to late April, so to add a new moddel is out of the question for now till Apple Expo Paris at lest. Oh well.

Current backlog is probably one of the many reasons to introduce a 17" iMac, it will move some people away from the 15"...

We won't see ANY hardware revs until at least July. Apple said so.

It's in the april issue, the author is called A. Pril and the "new" iMacs "will be available" on the easter monday (April 1.).

Macwelt never made really good april fool's jokes.

I don't think it will happen. Adding a 17" display would canabalize PM G4 sales. Think about it, a complete machine with a SuperDrive and 17" display for, what, $2299?

It would either cannabalize sales or be another cube because it would now be is prosumer territory w/o a lot of expanability.

The panel market may re-adjust itself in the coming months. I wish I could find the link, but Samsung had recently announced a 16" 1280x1024 panel intended to not be significantly more expensive than current 15" panels. I believe they'll be available both in Samsung displays and as glass for other manufacturers units. If 17" glass is too expensive, 16" might be just the ticket. Personally I'd want a bigger display (than 15") on an all-in-one desktop. Mostly, though, that's because I'm more in the market for a laptop, and laptops currently support the same res, for me to give up portability, I'd want a bigger display (along with more power). The current iMac display (if Apple's 15" ASD is any indication) should be quite nice, but a 16" 1280x1024 TFT iMac would offer a very nice (and perhaps not too expensive) upgrade to the iMac.

Wow, the rather ambiguous statement "no CPUs for awhile" (or whatever it was) has really morphed lately.

It's not so ambiguous. Read the full quote:

[quote]"We're not planning to introduce any new CPUs at Macworld Tokyo, as a matter of fact, we're set for some months now," said Joswiak. "Having just updated all four product quadrants, it's really nonsensical to think we're about to update the quadrants again at Macworld Tokyo."<hr></blockquote>

Apple's entire range has been updated within the last three months. Without taking the time to check, I'm pretty certain there isn't an instance (other than the odd exception of adding combo drives to PowerBooks) in which Apple has updated a product line within two or three months of the last update.

There is no way on earth the iMac will get any kind of update until MacWorld New York at the very earliest. I'd be amazed if everyone who pre-ordered their iMac has it on their desk by that time as it is.

What is the correlation between a shortage of 15" and 17" displays?

A complete machine?? You mean with its harldy-upgradeable hardware, 100mhz system bus, and 2 complete product revision-old graphics card?

    Get Real.

there is no way in hell you will see a 17" lcd imac at macworld tokyo, wwdc, or mwny 2002. you can quote me on that. in fact i would be surprised to see one before 2nd quarter of 2003.

I'm not as pessimistic as webber, but I'd say MWSF (that's first quarter) '03. Not before.

I'm talking deeper than that. I also asked WHAT is that correlation rather than deny the existence of one.

I'm optimistic about an iMac with a larger LCD, 17" or perhaps 16" or 18", but I don't think it will show up until MWSF. LCD prices will need to fall again before Apple would consider such an iMac.

Also, I don't think Apple would do this until they have changed their LCD display lineup to 17", 19", and 24". The iMac isn't going to get a 17" display when Apple still sells a separate 15" display, it would be too much overlap between the iMac and "pro" macs.

Ahh, but when Apple finally pulls their head outta their arse and offers a 17" iMac, they will fly off the shelves like nobody's business. Apple will never be able to meet demand. There are so many people who want an iMac but cannot stand its tiny display...

There isn't a correlation between the shortage of the 15" and 17" displays. The shortage of the 15" is only because the demand rose faster than expected as the cost has reduced to the point that it has become economically possible to include them at extremely low prices. So with all the PC companies jumping on the bandwagon the demand has risen and shortened supply. Their are still plenty of 17", but at a significantly higher price point.

Having said that, I think we could very well see a 17" iMac in the future. How soon? I would doubt MWTY would be the time. I think we'd be lucky to see one before the end of the year.
