Apple's 6.1-inch LCD iPhone may launch one month after OLED models

Supplies for one of the three iPhones expected to be launched in this fall's annual refresh may be constrained, after another analyst writes there could be a one-month later start of mass production for the 6.1-inch LCD model compared to the other OLED-based versions.

"We currently see no delay in the ramp of Apple's upcoming flagship 5.8-inch or 6.5-inch OLED iPhones," said Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty in a note seen by Barrons, indicating the two models accompanying the LCD version are seemingly on schedule for launch later this year.

"However suspected issues with LED backlight leakage have caused a 1-month delay in mass production of the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone," the analyst warns. It seems that Apple anticipated production issues for the new devices, with suppliers advising Huberty the four weeks "is down from a 6-week delay baked into the original production forecast."

A delay in mass production gives Apple's suppliers and assembly partners less time to build iPhones in time for its launch. The months immediately after the refresh are typically Apple's best for iPhone sales, so having ample supplies of iPhones to sell over the holiday shopping season is crucial.

At worst, the one-month production delay could push Apple to release the LCD model at a later time to the OLED versions, but Apple has previously staggered the release of its products, something it could easily do again. For example, the iPhone 8 started shipping in September last year, while the iPhone X landed the following November.

This is not the only claim that the LCD model is causing production issues. A report from early June cited "light leakage" problems with the display, in part caused through the limitations of LCD and Apple's intention to retain the notch across all of this year's models.

From an engineering standpoint, OLED is easily capable of being cut and folded, as its ability to work without a backlight means it can be produced on a somewhat flexible substrate. LCD screens need the backlight, making them thicker and less capable of being used for an edge-to-edge display with rounded corners and a cut-out section at the top.

Apple is currently thought to be producing three different iPhone models for 2018, with two OLED-based versions alongside the 6.1-inch LCD edition. The LCD model is expected to be the cheaper model of the three, with reduced specifications to match, while the OLED versions will continue to be premium models with high-end components.

That's good to know.   My iPhone 6+ is hanging on by a thread.  For a couple hundred dollars I could get it back up to speed -- but I would prefer to just replace it with the 6.1" since I plan on getting one anyway.

If I get it repaired I'll want to keep it another year just to get a return on my investment.

If six weeks worth of issues was "baked" into the original plan and it's down to four weeks, that is called being AHEAD of schedule.
Just because Apple may have planned for the deliveries to be staggered, doesn't mean anything was delayed at all.

We all knooooow why Apple is delaying the 'cheaper' LCD iPhone model. **wink wink!** **hint-hint** Their excuse of it being a display problem... is laughable.

If those are the 3 choices this year, what the F. The iPhones are just getting HUGE in size. Really, any screen over 6" is a little large for a phone. 5.8" is pushing it, but now a 6.5", really? Besides a 6.1" LCD?

I get a bigger phone is easier to throw more crap into it, but to me, it seems to be taking things to the extreme.

It would be nice to see the SE become a 4.2-4.5 inch phone that is kept fairly updated. Granted, it will never be on the level of the flagships but a good, cheaper, alternative for those who like the small phones. It’ll just be a poorer processor, GPU, and camera.

Not sure Apple would like the impact on the ASP of iPhones though.

That said, I’ll get a 6.5” version in a year or two. iPhone 7 running great.

Katy Huberty is a analyst, her job is to move Apple stock so her company makes money on trades. She has been the worst “Apple analyst “ since she came on the scene 4 or 5 years ago.

The 6.5” would lose the “chin and forehead,” though. It should have the same footprint as today's 8+

IMO putting a couple hundred dollars into an iPhone 6 (4 generations old) sounds like a waste, I would definitely just invest that money into replacing it.

I agree with this. It is too big in two aspects: screen size is too big for one-handed use (more and more of the screen is out of reach). This is a problem even if the overall frame is not as big due to slimmer bezels. Then it's the other aspect: the overall frame is also getting bigger which is just too large and heavy to fit in the pocket, or stay in the pocket or hold in the hand comfortably. So that is why it was a disappointment to hear that the iPhone SE will not get the slim bezel treatment, but might be discontinued. That one would be best in keeping the 4.7 size screen which is sufficient, in the same size body (or close to it). If they would also keep the phone jack, that would be the perfect phone.

Nope!  The display problem has been public knowledge for months.  It has been widely expected that the 6.1 would be delayed because of it.

If you don't like it, then buy an SE -- or a 7 or 8.

Agree!  But, I don't know if it'll last another 6-12 weeks.

Just this week I was at the airport trying to pick up a friend who had gone to the wrong gate.  But my phone was dying quickly and I didn't have a charger.  To get the battery replaced I have to get the screen replaced.  And the screen is so broken I could lose a chunk out of it anytime.   Life sucks!   :)
