Moving on to graphics testing, the publication ran the demanding 3DMark Slingshot Extreme 3.1 test to find the Note 9 best its S9+ forebear with a score of 4,639. Apple and OnePlus both beat Samsung with scores of 4,994 and 5,124, respectively. It appears 3DMark has optimized its test suite since Tom's last ran the evaluation, as the S9+ previously hit a tally of 5,793, while the iPhone X notched 3,998.
Sustained performance is the elephant in the room. We should wait until the Note 9 is properly tested before jumping to any conclusions. Clearly the iPhone can't even sustain anything close to that score.
This is the Graphics score of the test ,not the combined score (Physics is excluded):
The OnePlus 6 has, by far, the best Snapdragon 845 implementation with very little throttling (some of the gaming phones with high binned / overclocked SoCs might be even better, but they have yet to be tested). It's also important to note that this test is OpenGL on Android and Metal on iOS. Newer games, such as Fortnite, use Vulkan.
I don't think the A12 will overtake that level of GPU performance, Qualcomm has a clear lead, and the 7nm Snapdragon 855 is only 5~6 months away (entered mass production a month or so back).
Physics scores almost entirely depend on number of cores, not their individual performance. It like using a 22 Core Xeon for movie editing, where the slow cores will render much faster than the 8 Core CPU with much faster cores.
but the physics test has been criticized for being unrepresentative. Almost no software uses 8 cores on Android devices. So this test doesn’t show much of use. Apple, for example, uses Metal for physics, but this test doesn’t. So it’s useless on iOS devices.
I said: "Physics is excluded"

You can hook the Note 9 up to a bigger screen with an hdmi cable and run a limiteded sort of Windows like OS. That's what i read in the newspaper today. I bet it will look like shit and is totally useless but hey it's in there.
This isn't new. The new part is that you don't need the Samsung dock to make it work and is actually a result of Huawei's own desktop mode which which debuted last year and took Samsung to task for requiring a dock (at significant cost).
It's somewhat limited but if you are in a squeeze without a PC it can save the day.
So, you see people “in a squeeze without a PC” but they happen to have a monitor, HDMI cable, keyboard and mouse lying around to connect together?
No. Just a cable.
So absolutely useless then. A parlor trick to convince elitist users that they're actually accomplishing something.
Edited: Don't you mean a cable and a monitor? Please explain what kind of situation you'd find yourself in where there's a spare monitor handy that's not already connected to a much more capable PC?
Useless parlour trick?
No and no.
Read what I said.
Isn't having a monitor a given? Like when you send an email you need a recipient?
That's what the 'desktop' in desktop mode is. Is it really necessary to spell that out?
The only thing the user needs is a cable.
Why would someone carry a phone and a monitor around instead of a laptop? The monitor you use is the one already present where you are (be it at home or away).

I posted a response to that. I’d like to know how that is being done in Metal, when it is a generic test, and Metal is exclusive to Apple.

Funny how you always seem to see an"elephant in the room" named "Sustained Performance", as if that is the only metric of value for any phone.
Enjoy your day,
It's not the only metric, but sustained graphics performance is critical for gaming, AR or other 3D applications that are open for more than ~30 seconds.
A lot of the important metrics of a phone are rarely discussed. It's mostly just peak performance of an isolated Geekbench CPU test.
As I asked you last time, show me both phones playing several common games and the gameplay suffering and slowing down. If it’s “critical” as you claim, then user experience should suffer because of it (demonstrably).

I never said you need to carry a monitor. I said when would you find yourself with an available monitor that isn’t ALREADY attached to a PC. Which you now clarified by saying it would be one you already have (presumably connected to an existing computer at home or work).
Who’s going to waste time connecting their phone to their monitor when they’re at a location with their existing home/work computer? Surely if they have something to do they’d just use their home/work computer instead of a half-assed phone with no keyboard/mouse. That sounds sooooo productive.
Again, a pretty useless feature. With Continuity on my iOS devices and Macs (along with cloud storage) I can seamlessly switch devices to get things done without having to use a hack like connecting my phone to a monitor and try to work sans keyboard/mouse.

You still haven't made a case for "sustained performance" as an actual metric using a synthetic benchmark.
I've searched for "Thermal Throttling on iPhone X"; I'm just not seeing many complaints, hence, why I don't buy into your constant push for "sustained performance" synthetic benchmarks. I'll be happy to consider links to actual thermal throttling issues in games.

It's not going to be your first option if there are better ones available but if you find yourself needing that kind of option, it's nice to have it to hand.

Nonsense. Avon is, as usual, creating narratives about his chosen chinese knockoff, and people are asking him to explain and validate. Considering this is an Apple-site, it seems you have the troll hats reversed. Not surprisingly.

Still waiting for you to spell out, clearly, the use cases where this adds value. You’re at a friend’s house who will let you unplug his monitor to plug it into your phone with whatever cable it is you need? And then you type on the phone with your fingers to send craft an email on the monitor? Sounds horrible. There has to be an easier way to send an email...like using a web client on this person’s computer.

So I asked if people are actually using it, and to share some of their stories of saving the day. In return you asked me to prove why they wouldn’t use it...silly tactical non-answer. I assume now the answer is “no”, people aren’t using this and you have no experiences or stories to share otherwise.
Non answer? How exactly would I know the answer?
Is everyone who uses it, under orders to upload a write up to the internet?
The question stands. Why wouldn't someone use it if it could get someone out of a squeeze? Or perhaps not even a squeeze:
He's just trollin' along... Looking for any objection he can find -- regardless of how ridiculous it is...
Nonsense. Avon is, as usual, creating narratives about his chosen chinese knockoff, and people are asking him to explain and validate. Considering this is an Apple-site, it seems you have the troll hats reversed. Not surprisingly.
It shouldn't matter what site you're on. Stupid is stupid.

Erm, no.
Samsung has ditched its dock IMO simply because Huawei brought its own dockless implementation to market and poked Samsung publicly in the eye during the Mate 10 presentation last year.
Samsung is playing catch up here. That's not a narrative (in the sense you intend it), it's a fact.
For an Apple site, I see a lot of Samsung and Google related articles. Hey, even Huawei on occasion.

What if it isn't your computer or network?
Now you’re really stretching to try and find a use case for this. Why don’t you describe a scenario for me instead of asking me to? Since you’re the one who thinks this is a useful feature.
Please go back and read what I wrote. Which bit didn't you get?
I am not stretching anything. This feature exists for the reasons I suggested. Good for when you are in a squeeze.
This is what I wrote:
"It's somewhat limited but if you are in a squeeze without a PC it can save the day."
Let's be logical. If you're going to write a mail and you have your laptop and phone with you, which one is best?
If someone had their laptop or or access to their own network, why would they use their phone?
I'm not stretching anything.
Now try the opposite, and think of why this feature could save the day in some situations or make life easier in others.
You shouldn't need to strech to understand this but before you overdo it, go back and re-read what I wrote.
You are flaying wildly because you didn't read (or perhaps understand) what I wrote.
You simply jumped in wildly and blindly - once again - without thinking first.
So, as usual, you have nothing.
Funny how you can’t even come up with a SINGLE use case for this (with specifics).

What?
How about any situation when you do not have access to your computer and you need to modify a document?
How about using Google Docs on a big screen when you are without your laptop?
How about viewing websites in desktop mode - but on an actual desktop (monitor)?
How about playing games or watching something like Netflix on a big screen (edit: there is debate about if this is possible and if Netflix is tweaking things to throw up errors. - some report success, others don't)?
Didn't you read the links I gave?
You need me to spell it out? You couldn't reach those conclusions yourself?
Of course there are use cases. The specifics will depend on the person and this is a feature that will probably only get better over time.
It is rather limited at the moment, but hey, you already knew that, right? Because I made that clear from the outset. You are trying to argue something simply for the sake of arguing.
"I really rate this feature"
That was from a user on the Reddit thread I linked to.
And lastly, Samsung has improved its Desktop Mode (DeX). Don't you think that improving it (instead of leaving it as it was) is indicative of users actually using it?
Comments
That's only the graphics score, not the physics and not the combined.
I'd also point out that this test is written in Metal, as such, it is used for the physics component (which again, is not what I posted).

As I asked you last time, show me both phones playing several common games and the gameplay suffering and slowing down. If it’s “critical” as you claim, then user experience should suffer because of it (demonstrably).

I've searched for "Thermal Throttling on iPhone X"; I'm just not seeing many complaints, hence, why I don't buy into your constant push for "sustained performance" synthetic benchmarks.
I'll be happy to consider links to actual thermal throttling issues in games.

Spell it out for us.
