Thai man punches saleswoman over iPhone X Face ID dispute

In a video that went viral in Thailand this week, a man punched a female Apple salesperson in the face, following a dispute over a faulty Face ID scanner.

The Thailand viral video

According to English-language Asian news website Coconuts Bangkok, which cited the Thai news outlet Amarin TV, the 23-year-old assailant admitted to the act and apologized. He has met with his victim, has been fined the equivalent of $150 by authorities, and has agreed to pay the victim $1500 in restitution.

"I'd like to apologize to the society that I overreacted. It was the heat of the moment," the man told reporters, according to the site. "I've apologized to the victim, and she didn't want to take legal action."

The 30-second video of the assault has been shared more than 1.4 million times on Facebook. It shows the man arguing with an employee of the Studio 7 at Central Pinklao shopping mall, before punching her in the face. The dispute, an earlier Coconut report said, followed the man's demand for a replacement for his iPhone X, and the store's refusal. Employees had told the man that the Face ID feature on the phone was not broken.

The same store, Coconut Bangkok reported, had just a few weeks earlier caught a customer watching pornography on a MacBook display unit.

Apple has started the hiring process for an official Apple Retail store, said to open at some point in 2018.

I do wonder if Face ID still recognized the sales person on her phone after the incident.

    Too soon?

This man should be arrested and dealt with ...

iStudio/Studio 7 etc. here just are not the same when it comes to customer service as Apple Store (probably part of the reason is the concept of face and loss there of).  I have told people that when the Apple Store in IconSiam opens they should shop there if they are going to buy Apple products and avoid the iStudios etc.

Apple current has NO brick and mortar stores in Thailand.  They started hiring for the Iconsiam which might open at the end of the year... but there are no Apple Stores you can walk into (there is online ordering available).

I’m not going to watch that video, especially since it has already been addressed by their legal system.

Apple users blame Apple. Because when you create everything from chips to the OS, it’s all your “fault,” as far as users are concerned. This is, however, a very positive thing. In the Microsoft Windows world, there’s a lot of finger pointing between hardware vendors, driver writers, and Microsoft. And it’s entirely the user’s job to sort it out. OTOH, if Face ID doesn’t work, you can just contact Apple support. You don’t have to figure out if it’s a software, driver, or hardware problem.

The real question is: is the third party or independent reseller responsible (or even authorized on Apple’s behalf) for swapping out the phone, or even diagnosing a claimed Face ID issue?

IMHO, It is part of the culture of face and the inability to express oneself -- it can lead to some pretty explosive situations very quickly.  Foreigners can quickly learn how dangerous it can be very quickly if they cause someone to lose face in public.  I have seen drunk foreigners that have treated normal girls as if they are bar girls in public while they are with their boyfriend and a group and in very short order they end up in the hospital fighting for their life.  It does not blow often, but when it does... watch out.

What just stuns me are the reactions of the people around her.  Here's some cowardly guy that sucker-punches a woman right in the face, and everyone around her just stands straight up like a flagpole and do nothing.

People should have grabbed that man-child by the throat and have him kiss concrete.  I'm hoping someone did that after the video cut-off.

iStudios and Studio 7 are authorized dealers and service centres.

Well I hope you have deep pockets. She got $1500 for the face punch. What would he get from you on a "concrete kiss"?

That was likely negotiated as a way to clear the way for the individual to make a contribution to the police fund to make the charges go away.  It usually is only done once the victim is bought out.   7/11 workers make about 30 baht an hour so I would not expect a retail shop to pay that much more... so you are talking about 1500 hours wages in compensation.

Minimum wage I believe is 300 baht a day (yes that is more than 8 hours).

As much as I agree in principle, just how do you practically/anatomically make someone kiss the ground if you’re grabbing them by the throat?

People generally will not get involved because they have no idea what is going on. That lack of clarity of intentions prevents people from acting. It's why when a person is being attacked in a city, for example, they need to yell "Fire!" instead of "Help!". Clarifying the need for other people to act (in their own interest and in the interest of the person being harmed) causes them to do something.

... and they run all away swiftly ...
It’s better to point at someone and say “you help me” .

There is also another reason why it is not generally a good idea to get involved in other peoples disputes... In the west we sort of have the concept of a fair fight, in the east, it is more based on the concept of a bundle of arrows are stronger than a single arrow.  If you are not aware and intervene, the coming to a rescue can quickly escalate to the point where it is you against a group - which again is a very dangerous situation because of the lack of control when angry.  As such people that might have been courageous in the west may grow to be much more cautious here (if you are smart).

Why do I get the feeling people will blame Apple for something they had zero control over?

What does her gender matter? She accepted the apology, wanted no legal action and collected $1500.
