Airpods are one of the best products Apple has made. Not perfect, but just so good at many things. I can see why they sell so many of them.

An improved version of Airpods would be nothing short of outstanding.
I see a surprisingly great deal of them. I knew they'd be popular but my anecdotal observations makes them seem even more popular than I'd have expected.

AirPods 2.0 need to be adjustable for different ears and/or an Apple-sanctioned method of securing them needs to be available. Any means of securing the AirPods in one's ears needs to be compatible with the charger case without having to remove it (unlike 3rd party solutions that currently have to be).
As someone else mentioned, BT 5.0 would seem a natural, too.

The way airpods handle volume control is poor. In my case not really an issue, as the apple watch auto switches to music control when you play music. You can then use the digital crown to control volume on the watch, which works well with the airpods.

I dropped one in PAINT.  Rinsed it, let it dry.  After a few days it was OK.  I do get some flakey behavior from my pair though.  I often only get one to be recognized even though both are in (it’s the “painted” one that works more consistently, interestingly enough).  I feel like I get some interference or times they drop the connection.  That might be more the podcast app skipping issues.  Most annoying is seemingly random discharge of one bud.  I’m thinking there is debris or dirt in the case and it’s not charging.

I’d love wireless charging and better waterproofing as well as longer battery life.

Yep...I'm seeing a lot more out and about too, Soli.

Bigger AirPods for bigger earholes. Please.
Or smaller for smaller ear canals. Or better yet - those little silicon/rubber tips that can not only seal them in your ears (great for noise reduction) but add comfort.
My girlfriend’s ear canals are too big for AirPods. My besty’s ears are too small (they pop out). AirPods are clearly designs for a perfect 80% on the bell curve.

Which is fine. That’s a great thing about the Beats acquisition, as far as I’m concerned: Apple can release signature, cutting edge shit on their own label, and release edge and fringe case products under another label. I think we'll be seeing all sorts products with capabilities similar to AirPods, but with things like colors, sponge canal fittings, buds connected by cords, etc., all as Beats This And That.

The number one feature request for me would be a design that makes them stay in the ear. They just fall out for me. There’s no way I can use these, or the wired EarPods. They just fall out with their current glossy smooth drop like plastic design. One design and size for all has its drawbacks. It won’t fit everyone’s ear, unfortunately.

The shape and rigidity hurt my ears and like the standard set included with the iPhone, i threw them out.  My hope is that new earbuds from Apple will see the introduction of soft silicon type in-ear buds like some of the competition. I am using a competitors now - and happy, but wish Apple would produce something for people who don’t like the fit, feel or rigidity of the the current Apple products.
So we’re supposed to believe that your little ears felt pain and you threw out your $160 AirPods? I wish I could simply toss out everything in my life that brought me the slightest bit of discomfort.

“People hang white cigarette butts on the ear” is the impression. The white rod-shape is so ugly.

So given Apple tendency towards making things smaller... would you rather have smaller AirPods or AirPods with better battery life (say, an hour more)?
Since battery life is already good, I choose smaller although I think they are already small enough. I offer a third choice for more sensors (additional accelerometers, heart rate, GPS). Just like the Watch has replaced iPhone in terms of sensory data, AirPods will eventually replace the Watch.

Too hard to find them in the dark.
As to what 'is' and 'isn't' a thing anymore; you might as well just say "The whole 'Apple' thing isn't a thing anymore". White wasn't defining for the iPod; it was defining for Apple. It's not going away anymore than aluminum is going away.
White was defining for consumer electronics the same way that black was for Sony 30 years ago.

Except that black was already a thing long before white. With Jobs out of the picture, Apple will not be revisiting things like retro colorful iMacs again. So they will also not be revisiting Sony’s iconic black consumer electronics design either.

Many people opt to wear their AirPods for workouts, even though there isn't much protection against liquids. This time around there should be some semblance of water or sweat resistance. Not enough to wear in the pool, but enough to take them for a jog without worrying they will be damaged.

...uh no, there is already absolutely no need to worry about “damage” from sweating, jogging or otherwise. Did you not see the videos of water tests? They have been submerged in a bucket and run thru a clothes washer, came out fine.

    What data suggests otherwise?

We don't particularly have complaints on battery -- 3 hours out of the buds in a single go is pretty solid. But Apple can push this further.

New APs are rated for about 5 hours of audio playback, not 3. Half that for phone calls.

However this will diminish over time. I got mine the December they came out and use daily, they get less than half the original rating now, 1 hour talk time and almost 2 for audio playback. Disappointed that the $50 battery service is per pod. Guess I’ll wait and see what’s announced.

I wish they sounded as good or better than the wired ones. Today they don’t.

I think the airpods look ugly hanging out of people’s ears, not a great looking design.
I think you’re high, personally. They look fine.

I would disagree with the article when it said:
" our dream AirPods would have full-on noise cancellation."

I would vote for effective ambient sound management.
One of the most annoying things about wearing earbuds is when you are trying to talk to somebody wearing them or somebody is trying to talk to you.  The typical result is: " HUH?  WHAT? (long pause while he stops his music and removes the earbuds) then:   "Ok, What did you say?"   And the answer is often something like:  "I just said "excuse me" because I sneezed."

AirPods that let appropriate external sound in could make the experience much more pleasant.

I think the airpods look ugly hanging out of people’s ears, not a great looking design. Would be awesome if they designed them a bit more inconspicuously. Also the Powerbeats 3 still has better battery and sealed in design to keep music loud.
Apple didn’t design them to be snug with a seal, that makes your ear feel plugged and doesn’t allow ambient noise to pass through.
They designed them specifically that way, hence why they are the best selling earbuds the past year. AirPods are mainly designed for dailu everyday use not just workout specific. So therefore you need to be able to hear people around you when walking down the street or on the train or in a store etc. That way you can still be somewhat aware of your surroundings.

One thing, I'll buy them......Able to MUTE a phone call easily on the airpods themselves and NOT the case or Iphone.....Thank you for reading
I’d like it if the Watch display changed to a big MUTE button when on a call, which would make this and other similar use cases easier.

Er, so you dropped one in paint, and then rinsed it in water, but you want better waterproofing? Why?
