MW Tokyo G4 Speed Bump or G5 Surprise?

Wow, you high schoolers sure do have high hopes.

MWT is really the kick-off for all three models of the new iMac. I would expect a majority of the keynote to be spent on the iMac and OSX in its current form, iPhoto, and iPod. No new updates.

The only thing that MIGHT sneak it's way into the keynote is new displays, but even as much as I want a shiny new 19" widescreen display, I would unfortunately expect a new promotion with the current line of displays.

No iPod updates, no OSX updates, no Power/i/book/mac updates, nothing. Now go back to study hall.

BTW, I easily have the largest dick in this thread.

The updates will come when the right hardware is aviable. Marketing will play a minor role in this for two reasons.

    1. Currently to little performance gap between the low end tower and the iMacs. The lowend tower is overpriced compared to its performance/features vs the Imac but lowering the price is not someting Apple likes.

    2. The GHz gap vs the AMDs and Intel

If Apple can give the towers a modest speed bump say 200 MHz it would at least give the towes a perfmance gap to the iMacs even if it would do very little to close the GHz gap.

200MHz across the board? Sounds good to me. 1GHz at the bottom end dual 1.2GHz at the top. Problem is you can't get 1.133GHz on a G4 with a 133MHz bus. Doesn't support 8.5 ratio. Would have to be 1.2 single or 1.0 dual.

I think if new displays don't show up, they'll finally just plain drop the price instead of tying a powermac purchase to it. I mean, how long has this promotion, in one form or anohter, been going on anyways? Since November or something like that?

I hope we'll see new displays, a 17" at a lower price, then 19" for a price just above what the 17" is now, and the 22" will most probably be the same, apart from maybe a $300 price drop.

Oh yeah, RosettaStoned, you do not.

I'm sory that I'm singling out your post on this outsider, but it's a relevent issue.

[b] Let's give you guy's an idea of how rediculas a speed bump, or anything else PowerMac is going to sound right now.

I ordered a Dual GHz PM, cancelled that order the day they announced GeForce 4 Ti's would be in it. Which - if you recall was not that long after the first one was announced. So basicly I am early on the list of those to receive PM with BTO Ti's.

It has not even shipped yet.

They have however shipped the Apple Care Protection Plan.

So what are they going to do? Upgrade all of the orders that were placed for the top of the line PowerMac's with top of the line PowerMac's maybe?

Well draw your own conclusions, but they have not even shipped the top model of the last announcement yet because I just checked about 5 minutes ago, and I'm still in limbo.

    Onlooker,

Yes, besides the fact that Apple already said no new CPUs at MWT, it would make no sense to upgrade that brand new line of machines. Especially with G5s. The logistics involved would be a nightmare. Apple just isn't geared up for the 3month cycle per product line. I doubt Motorola is either.

I completely agree and am in a similar situation as you. My time table for a new machine is was to buy a new machine this month (due to company bonus distributions). Then, after I found that the Geforce Ti's were coming out, I decide to wait until they are shipping. Realistically, you won't see your machine until April, or possibly May. Then consider that there may be technical issues to resolve, like with the current 4 mx chips. When you give that a month or two, you're now in the July timeframe.

Likewise, I decided to wait until MWNY for my new machine. The Geforce 4 Ti's should be shipping with the bugs worked out by then. Also, at the minimum, I'd expect dual 1.2 Ghz G4s for the same price. Of course, the best case scenario would including dual P4 toasting G5s, but I'm not counting on it. The G4 should be shipping on the Hip7 process (.13u + SOI), and include twice the L2 cache.

Don't scare me. I have been without a computer for month already. Apple said that the Ti G4's are shipping in March, and I did notice a Mac version Ti in CompUSA's add yesterday. So I'm thinking any day now.

Also, Apple just released new Nvidia drivers witin the past few day's I don't expect any problems. Plus the MX, and Ti are a far cry from one another.

CUPERTINO, CA - Feb.11, 2002 - In a startling series of events the Lord God Almighty reached His hand down from Heaven today and, with a thunderous gesture, carved into stone the phrase "NO NEW APPLE HARDWARE IN MARCH" Onlookers were stunned and confused. "I'm not sure what this means," said one Mac fan, "but I'll bet it has something to do with new G5s coming out at Tokyo." Several others went on to speculate that it was evidence of an Apple-branded PDA to be annouced later this week.

Pretty sad when I've taken to quoting my own fake quotes (from another <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=001283&p="; target="_blank">very similiar thread</a>).

That's like Steve keeping Phil Schiller out of the loop and then surprising him with, "Hey Phil! The new iMac is here! Surprise!"

I just don't think you understand how things work at Apple.

My guess is that he hears about the hardware a few weeks before it is released, but there is no way the guy is on the inside on everything. He's basically in charge of advertising for the entire hardware lineup (bar the iPod, maybe, who knows). It is my thought that he knows about a product when its gurranteed to be final, or a few final candidates so he can have his team come up with advertising schemes.

Actually it has been overclocked to that. On several occasions (the dual 1 gig). If you want proof check out <a href="http://team.macnn.com"; target="_blank">http://team.macnn.com</a>; and search for the CPU. I think there are 2 of them in RC5.

Well, I have to say that this is crap. I think that any top executive at Apple knows about all of the "inside" activities at Apple regarding products....Remember Art Levinson (Not even an emplyee at Apple) knew about the iMac as it was under development? Genentech knew because Art wanted them to see the iMac so they could pre order it...come on, even Time magazine had the story for months in advance.

I have to concede that you are probably right, for the most part. But still, your facts don't say whether he sees everything, just the final few candidates or the final candidate before Jobs decides to say "Fvck it, we're starting the fvck over. Again."

Boy you guys have hit a new low. First I just though it was Macintosh that was being retarded. But now I see that the supidity has spread. Sad. The fact that you guys think there is going to an updated G4 or even a freaken G5 at Tokyo is the most insane predition/notion/crazy talk that I have ever heard in my whole damn life. New displays? Thats a possibility. New software? Maybe. But new comps in any way shape or form? No. I was hoping for a new TiBook at Tokyo. But when the a top executive who works for Apple. Comes out and says specificaly "No new CPU's [comps] at Macworld Tokyo" I tend to believe him. Some of you guys have gotten so wrapped up is your little Apple world that when word comes down from the horses mouth condradicting your grand plans, you dont believe it! But it must be some conspiricy to keep him out of the loop so they can suprise us all! <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> (Yes you sound just as retarded.)

Do you realize how Apples reputation would be damaged if they flat out said that there would be no comps at X Show. And then released a comp there? No one would ever believe them again. Not to mention that the PM where just updated. Apple would be commiting a finnacial suicide of sorts with the current ones just now beginning to flood the channels.

Your logic is flawed. Go to business school. For the sake of our sanity.

Its not about what he or whoever knows...it is about what they said to make us think they know, even though I know that what they said was really not an opinion but "in the know" deterrance speak.......or maybe circumstances have permitted a change to the word on hardware 2 months ago?
