    1) they just rewarded Apple customers with a product huawei paid for.

    2) they GAVE away product to a competitors customers.

    3) the messaging was actually not untrue. Everyone needs to charge their smart device at some point. A power bank is a great way to do it.

    4) ZERO recipients will look at this and then think: “oh I’m going to buy these guys products now”

    5) must be for publicity only.
    Point 5.

People are talking about it. Even people who say they don't care will be looking out of the corner of one eye on October 16th just to see if there is anything interesting to write home about. For those who have bought a new 2018 iPhone, it will obviously be compared to the Mate 20, if only to reassure them that the price was worth it. For those sitting on the fence, there is a double hook. The Mate 20 itself and the P20 Pro will drop in price. If you want the tri camera, low light long exposure, hand held photography, 3x optical zoom (5x hybrid) and all that, the P20 Pro might tempt them seeing as Apple hasn't provided any of that this year and the P20 Series is Supercharge capable anyway.

Even the most stalwart iPhone user will probably have some curiosity.
    Does Huawei have iOS?

It doesn't. That's the rub for some 90% of current iPhone users.

Even then, there are plenty of other devices coming on the market that will also be a "curiosity" with similar capabilities to the Mate 20. How will Huawei continue to stick out from the Android OS crowd? It's a lot of effort to enjoy a feature lead measured in weeks.

Seems like Huawei would do well to keep its attack Samsung, but needs to keep an eye on the other Chinese OEM's as well, you know, the whole value proposition crowd.

Weill Huawei just provided the only sensible reason to wait on line for an iPhone.   Otherwise, I think people who hang out in long lines for hours when they could wait a few weeks or order online is simply nuts.    But I'm glad to see that this incredible time (and money) waster is not limited to stupid Americans.    Anyone who gets so off on having a new phone on the first day of release has some serious problems IMO.

Personally, I just had Apple replace the battery ($29) on my iPhone6 and they also must have cleaned out the Lightning jack because it's once again working great now.  I expect the new phones to be quite nice, but rather than spending $1000, I'll keep the 6 for another year.    Maybe next year will be more than incremental changes.

“Incremental changes” ? Coming from someone who would be upgrading from an iPhone 6 to XS/XS Max it would be a monumental upgrade. Not sure what hardware features you’re waiting for but the new phones are already massively different from yours.
My first feelings coming from the 6S Plus to the Max is that it feels heavier, has a nicer display and doesn't seem any faster, oh and Face ID is fast, but also annoying that I can't open my phone  when standing above it without picking it up, so I think I miss Touch ID..... I'm sure it will grow on me.

Fair play to iOS 12, it really sped up older devices.

"In China Android claimed 80.4% share in the three months to June 2018 – up by 2.0 percentage points. However, iPhone X continues to be the top selling device, making up 5.3% of all handsets sold – it has now been the best-selling model in China every month since its release in November 2017. "

From your own link in the other thread where the iPhone continued to kick P20 Pro ass in its home market.  Go concern troll elsewhere.

Looking at that picture, I don’t see anyone on the fence. So some hard core Apple fans get some swag and Huawei gets some air time with a cheeky stunt. Tomorrow the world will have forgotten this, except for those with a free gift. I don’t think Huawei are so naive as to think they could have converted an Apple line squatter. A story about giving away 200 chargers in Singapore made it all the way to North America and beyond. In my mind, their plan worked.

Yes, but they're not trying to convince them. They want the free media coverage for those who might be on the fence.

I have to admit, I'm annoyed that Apple has not increased battery life for another year in a row, heck they actually decreased the battery in the XS against the X.

I cannot remember which poll it was, but it was a recent one, where it asked for the feature most people wanted in the next iPhone and the top answer was better battery life.
What? What are you talking about? The iPhone X’s is rated for another 30 mins, and that phone was already pretty good. I went from charging halfway through the day with the 7 to making it the whole day  with the original x. And the Xr is even better!
Apple has pulled a sleight of hand with the iPhone XS. The iPhone X has a battery rated at 2,716mAh and the iPhone XS is rated at 2,658mAh. Improvements of the CPU allow it to have performance on par with the X despite the drop.

Despite the promises of better battery life, you'll note that side by side the two are rated almost identically with the talk time actually down a whole hour on the XS!

Has it stopped me ordering the XS Max to replace my 6S Plus, no, it has not.

But I would apprecaite meaningfull battery life increases, if Apple put in a 4000mAh battery like a lot of their competitors do you'd probably find the average person could get up to two days worth of use on a single charge.

But even 10% of Apple's userbase is a good enough target.

As for competition. It swings both ways. Sometimes you're in front. Sometimes you're behind but it would be foolish not to try a scrape all you can while you're in front.

The Apple Watch Series 4 is a unique stand alone device, and accessory for iPhone, and judging by the universal praise it has received to date, is a going to be a positive factor in iPhone uptake by new users. That's a feature that Apple will certainly expound on, along with AirPod's, Walkie Talkie, AR, and Apple Music, among others.

Huawei has faster cellular data, and an additional camera. Sounds just like what Samsung will be pushing with the S10, another device that has difficulty competing against the iPhone.

    This is a humorous take on basically your position, that Android OS competes with iOS;

    https://www.macworld.com/article/3306436/iphone-ipad/the-real-winner-it-s-never-apple.html

"Let’s be clear here, for the slice of consumers who are already locked in to the Apple ecosystem, through the cloud based services, investment in apps, and personal circles that may require specific software commitments, the only real replacement for an iPhone is… another iPhone."

As noted in the article, some users actually prefer the  iPhone...

"Inside the Android ecosystem it’s a bit more fluid. Changing between Android manufacturers is a much easier proposition…"

Hence why I often note that Huawei's competition is Samsung, and the other Chinese OEM's, not Apple.

Funny. Our organization, which manages a fleet of over 5,000 phones, went the opposite way. We chose IOS over Android because it offered a more stable environment to administer. We go back a couple of model years in order to manage costs. Right now the iPhone 7 is the model we give out. It’s offered for $0 by the carriers and it’s still good for 2-3 years of business use.

You lost credibility in my eyes with your “wannabe” comment. I guess you just don’t get the nuance that cheap does not equate to better value.

I don't use a power bank. When you plug an iPhone into one, it would alert you to it trying to do anything other than charge, right? I occasionally plug my iPhone into a USB port on my employee provided computer, and both ask if I want to trust, and I always say no. And we know these things given away can't ever do anything to an iPhone other than charge it. Right? And it can't accidentally put a power spike on it that could destroy it. Right?

    Feature lead?

Modem? 3x Optical Zoom? AIIS? Battery? Dual SIM? ...

Dual SIM. Currently, yes that means right now, Dual SIM will resolve more of your problems than eSIM as eSIM doesn't have the same level of support at carrier level.

Battery. 'life not size'? Size matters. A Huawei flagship will get you through the day and then some. Perform the same actions on an iPhone and a P20 Pro and when the iPhone needs charging, the P20 Pro  probably won't. When it comes to charging the battery the P20 Pro will do it faster - out of the box.

Audio? Relative but here you go...

    https://gavinsgadgets.com/2018/04/14/huawei-p20-pro-audio-review-vs-iphone-x-samsung-galaxy-s9-google-pixel-2-xl/

As for finish and materials in general, the Huawei flagships are up there with the very best. The Mate RS even uses microcapsule cooling.

As someone who has spent 18 years in IT supporting all phones from PalmOS, iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows i can categorically state you are a big fat liar and you’ll need to call the fire department because your trousers are ablaze.

the ridiculous amount of articles that prove that from just a security perspective iOS is number one for corporates is phenomenonal. I suspect it’s because you’re trying to get iOS devices running 3rd party security software that is not required in the first place. Hell the amount of time I wasted getting AirWatch installed on iOS devices in order to do stuff that was already in iOS and also built into the Exchange servers they were connecting to. The Android and Windows devices were way worse to setup although the Windows devices were way better than Android.

You seem to be one of those IT needs that runs Linux because you think you’re so cool and knowledgeable but if you knew so much why are you using an operating system that wastes more time setting it up than using. If you have to spend so much time getting an OS to do what you want it to do then your OS sucks because an OS shouldn’t be noticeable it should just be there to run the software you want and need to run while giving said software the features you want and need.

You are not intelligent because if you were you’d realise that the reason why those engineers were using iOS is because they are secure (Android is anything but secure), and most of all the software they NEED is on iOS and most likely not on Android... so you know, they use iOS because it allows them to do work... you know, what they get paid for.

The problem with corporate systems is the do nothing managers get iPhones whereas the people who need to do the work get lumped with Android devices incacpable of allowing them to do their job effectively. I’ve done so much work for industrial sites and I’ve yet to meet a single person who has to use Android phones that loves them. Not a single person. The only people that love them are the IT guys who don’t have to have to use them in the same way and who all hate Apple for no logical reason other than Apple is deemed to be the big Goliath despite the fact that it’s the lowest market share.

Apple haters are not reasonable people from my experience and 99.9% of them have never used an Apple product extensively and thus are basically the tech equivalent of racists.

Huawei has no feature lead.  Huawei doesn't include the same level of Haptics and Speakers as the iPhones, and the battery life (not size) is no better. How many other phones besides the Pixel use eSIM? that is a major feature that travelers will love.  Dual SIM with eSIM is better than just dual SIM. Pressure sensitivity with good software support? Also, a lot of the press is downplaying the fact that this has a chassis made of polished stainless steel with diamond like coating.  The materials are more luxurious and functionally better than anything else except possibly the phONE that flopped for other reasons (mainly the bad camera at launch and poor marketing).
    Feature lead?

Modem? 3x Optical Zoom? AIIS? Battery? Dual SIM? ...

First, none of that are compelling feature "leads" and the market agrees.  When Apple can capture 22% of the $400-$600 market with iPhone 6s and 7 against the top Android tech none of those alleged feature leads has mattered. Apple has 88% of the >$800 market and 44% of the $600-$800.

As far as the vaunted Hwawei flagship threat:

"In the $600-$800 segment, Apple and Samsung alone contributed to 85% of the shipments while Huawei trailed by a big margin."

But no-no...Apple is in BIG BIG trouble from the Huawei juggernaut. Just wait and see. Says Avon every year. And he's NEVER wrong.

Then next year around this time it'll be the same.  Apple sales are flat!  You are just paying more to fill the Apple pie!  Just wait and see...look at the P30 Pro and revel in the technological prowess of Huawei.

Can you just get everyone in your family P20 Pros/Mate 20s and NOT come back here next year?  I'm sure that someday you'll be right and Apple will fumble and fall however many years that will be in the future.  Why don't you come back then?

Huawei is wasting their effort. These are hard-core iPhone users. They are not going to switch.

Battery size is smaller but use is rated higher. Doesn’t matter if that’s from better power management, if the result is the same.
