Time for Apple to do a mass buyback with stock down.
Now you mention it, did I hear Luca refer to Apple's stock buyback program? Did that end?

Apple earned $14.1 billion, a 32 percent increase from the same time last year. Earnings per share came in at $2.91, topping the average estimate of $2.79 among analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research”

And their next quarter estimate is in line with “expectations”. So the games continue.

Ouch. Tim's closing analogy "if you go to the market, and fill your cart up, it doesn't matter at the checkout how many items you have in there" is not a great parable. When you're assessing the health of the store, you want to see if people are buying a lot of things, or just a few things. AI commentators with a background in economics may wish to describe more, but I expect WS to see this as "Apple sees something coming they don't want to disclose to us." The smell of fear is ripe.

Market Cap under $1T now. Curious to see where it ends up tomorrow when the news of no longer reporting unit sales sinks in.
How many other major tech companies give out official unit sales numbers?
It doesn’t matter. Apple is supposed to be better than them.  This is because corporate Apple is irked they have to be transparent and accountable to shareholders.

Where does the SEC require a breakout of unit sales by product?

Am I missing something? Key to me is installed base still growing DOUBLE DIGITS. That’s off a very large base. That’s good news for HW and services. That’s more incredible to me, given that Apple killed cheapest entry phone SE. And seems to take much of worry out of lengthening phone cycles, since once you’re in ecosystem we all know that you tend to keep buying wider variety of offerings. Look forward to buy a few more shares on the dip. ;-)

$90 billion returned to investors over the year between share repurchases and dividends

    ------------------

That's a bull shit claim. Dividends which are the only part that go to investors is around $12 billion. The rest goes back to Apple.

FORUM SPECIFIC: Why in the hell does this form on a topic crap the bed and need one to be within the forum thread itself to reformat their reply?

The dashed lines and paragraph returns are not honored unless one edits and saves the original content once more.

It doesn't or the Apple Legal Team would be the dumbest group of lawyers in the Fortune 100.

Wall Street will be upset because they can't short Apple on units when revenue exceeds their guesses.

No, you don’t. You want to see what their gross revenue, profit, and margin are.

No, none of that goes back to Apple.  They cancel the shares they buy back, and the fraction of the company owned by all the outstanding shares goes up: the value is all returned to the shareholders.

For the above, at least on paper that is true. You must sell the shares to realize the gains whereas using dividends can realize right away if not reinvested
