This is very easy to enforce. Make Apple show the IP address of the person airdropping the content and make the log of IPs easily viewable by the user.

The harassment victim then calls the police and reports the IP address. The carrier (on the request from the police) identifies the phone which had that IP during the time logged. The owner is then identified.

NYC has cameras in many places. The police reviews the camera footage to prove that the iPhone owner and the victim in fact entered the subway around the time when the incident happened.

    Case proven.
    That's way too complicated.

All Apple needs to do is show a prompt that says "SoAndSo wants to send you a picture". You accept or not.

    That's is.
Apple already displays this prompt. The prompt has a preview of the image.
    I guess I didn't make myself clear.....

    A prompt WITHOUT an image.

    So it looks like this:

SoAndSo wants to send you an image

    [Accept]                 [Decline]

If you click "decline" the prompt disappears.

If you click "accept" then you get this:

Simple. The fact Apple shows you the image BEFORE you even accept it is pretty dumb.

I’m sure that’s how this issue will be resolved.

AirDrop is not prime for exploitation because the default setting is contacts only. So no one is going to get an unexpected transfer request without actually having manually switched it over to "Everyone"

Secondly AirDrop keeps a log file of all activities - including the sender's information (even if the recipient does not accept the transfer). Law enforcement can use the basic console app to pull up the details necessary to identify the perpetrator's phone.
I hope you’re right. I always make sure mine is set to “contacts only” so it’s hard to remember, but I seem to recall being surprised that I had to change it. I’d be happy to be wrong.

I agree with the premise but how could this possibly be enforced?
It could not be enforced. NYC has enough crime on its hands already. This will create a whole new class of criminals that will raise the statistics without enforcement. It’s one of those feel good laws politicians like to pass and tout during election season. But knowing the uncanny ability of politicians to create more and more layers of bureaucracy and budgets for those bureaucracies it’s entirely possible that de Blasio will assemble a “task force” to stamp out these criminals. And while he’s at it why not demand a backdoor form Apple so they can track down the digital flashers. Am I right or am I right?

“My twelve year old daughter got air dropped a picture of some perv’s wiener and evil, uncaring, insensitive Apple won't help the cops track the perp down.” You know it’s coming.

    No doubt.

If indeed Airdrop is "anonymous" (as it should be), how then can these evil-doers be caught and penalized?
Why do you think AirDrop should be anonymous. I disagree entirely.
To even ask that question illustrates a fundamental night-and-day difference in thinking between you (and those anonymous people who clicked Like on your post) and I.  It's not a matter of "why do I think it should be anonymous" but rather a question of why you feel it should NOT be.  Heck, why should we have secrets of any kind?

With AirDrop, some people might think that anonymity is not needed, but why then do you and everyone else in this forum NOT use your full first and middle and last name instead of an alias?  Seriously.  You know full well you can call yourself anything you like, even your real name if you want.  But most people choose not to.  It's the same with AirDrop.  You don't have to use your real name or use an identifier that would allow the recipient of your file to know without any doubt it is you.  That leaves Air Drop open to abuse, but that's a risk wherever FREEDOM REIGNS.  I personally don't think a band of idiots should be allowed to destroy or slowly eat away at the freedoms of the majority. It happens all to often in society.  So for that reason, I can only celebrate the fact that AirDrop does carry the same sort of anonymity as using a handle in an online forum like this.  If you disagree, that's fine.  Just start using your real first, middle and last name in this forum so we can see some consistency in your argument against anonymity.

Honestly, I think it probably isn’t. It’s just another opportunity for our all-knowing, all-seeing pals in government to pander to our technologically challenged friends and neighbors for Facebook “likes”.

Get outta here with your sexist bull***. You're quick to label all males this way but turn away when a slut walks half naked in public by an elementary school.

Right, removing the preview in “Everyone” mode is a good start. Of course, that doesn’t stop someone accepting a photo from an anonymous user in a group setting, like a class field trip, or a tourist group, or even a wedding reception, where people might want to share photos with a group of people they weren’t previously familiar.

I think it it would be nice if iOS gave a reminder after a user switched AirDrop to Everyone. As much as I would detest another menu indicator, that would be one I’d welcome — or at least the status available in the Control Panel, or notifications. While I’m not really worried about someone sending me a pornographic pic, I don’t want my devices broadcasting my presence to strangers. I’m always stunned when numerous devices show up in my airdrop menu, clearly set to “Everyone” and likely because they forgot to limit it after whatever event led to turning it on.

However, I wish there was a way to have an always on setting, based on immediate proximity. I’d love to be able to AirDrop a photo/contact card at an event to someone, or better yet an importable contact card — which as far as I know there’s still no simple way to do that, especially when it comes to Android phones.

Remember the gimmicky tapping phones together to imitate a transfer of contact info? That’s still not a bad idea in concept — a transfer of basic data with direct physical content implying some kind of intimate acknowledgement, which is even more safeguarded with touch and faceid today. It could be done with nfc in fact, without having to rely on any other radios being active. Again, ideally something in the control panel would be helpful. Unlock, swipe down the control panel, click on the Transmit Contact info button, and select the phone in immediate proximity to AirDrop to. But I can’t find any quick access features like that for contacts in CP settings, much less which might be useful if the other phone AirDrop is not enabled, or for exchange with an Android phone.

Out of eight women – all of them. Only two of them had only been flashed just once.
What a fantastic, enlightening, and depressing illustration of the difference in experience between women and men.

Thing is, when people have problems using AirDrop (not rare), or even if they simply want to use it on a one off occasion with someone not in their address book (who they don’t want to add to their address book), they are advised to switch it to “everyone”. Task accomplished, few people likely switch it back to “contacts only”.

Have to say, I can’t think of a good reason why you should be able to send an anonymous Airdrop.

I think the device identifier should be sent along with the drop and then the police should be able to get the owner of the device from Apple (through a court order).

I wrote a short story for class once that featured a serial flasher. The feedback I got was that the character lacked shock value.

And now these degenerates don’t even have to undo their zipper? Now they can do it without risk of being laughed at, or a good swift kick to the castanets?

Nope, Airdrop is too creep-friendly. Under what circumstances would you Airdrop a complete stranger?

I fully support the privacy thing, but at the same time, people needed to be protected from this sort of nonsense. Perhaps it would be better to prevent anonymous sending altogether. You can only send to a person if you’re in their contact list.

Dude it's not your job to save them

I think people should leave AirDrop on "Contacts Only" mode and only switch to "Everyone" for exceptions.

Apple also not showing a preview of the image before the receiver accepts the photo/ video is also a good start.

I agree there is NO REASON why it has to be anonymous or should be anonymous, although I wasn’t against it being anonymous but even I have sat at a restaurant full of high school kids and have received random pic or gifs , none nude I might add but definitely unsolicited, but from what I understand there is NO LOG of anykind of airdrop activity, schools are having a problem with it as well , because kids send each other stuff , or notes to cheat on tests , but yeah Apple should change something

Well, indeed. But the problem isn't the appendage; it's common decency, or lack of it. I think some people think this is not a really serious crime. Personally, I think someone who does this is simply gathering his 'courage' (for want of a better word) to escalate into something that these people would regard as serious.
If you are sorry about the appendage, it’s quite easy nowadays to get rid of it.
I didn’t say I was sorry about anything.

What about all those emails I get of half dress ladies trying to propositions me and try to get me to go to their website and date them.

Why haven't they outlaw that, isn't that harassment.

Let's be real here, this is just another nanny state law. This is law to some how protect stupid people from themself. Just turn off airdrop, I only turn mine on when I want someone to send me something.

The stupid emails I get are more of an issue than airdrop Dick pictures being sent to some lady for forgot to turn off airdrop.

Really?  When you get a dodgy email do you look around the room, wondering which of the creeps in the vicinity sent it to you?  Which one might follow you home?

Get real man.  If you're advising "stupid" people to turn off AirDrop then why don't you sort yourself out some better junk mail filtering, stupid.

So I have no friends and never been flashed. It's not my fault you've never met such girls in your life. I don't understand why you're so bothered by this?

But please Mr. Psychic tell me more about my life....  *eye roll*
It's funny because one of my biggest flashing memories was when I was talking to some musicians on a busy street on a party night. This street is full of clubs, bars, cafes etc. and it gets really wild at night.

They have this stupid group mobile bar thing that rides around the street. It has no doors and I have no idea why it's still legal but anyway, one of the girls flips her dress up to her waist exposing her G-string and everyone on the bar on wheels is screaming and she starts shaking her bare ass for like 50 people. But of course she's an innocent flower....
