If new iPod, what's price of old one?

Should a 10gig version be unveiled at MWTokyo, what would be a reasonable price drop for the current one?

Apple has a history of introducing updated products at the price of where the old one was. So you would assume $399 for a 10gig. Most have guessed the current one then being discounted to $299.

Can they surprise us and go lower? Like...

10gig = $299

5 gig = $199

    I hope that they'll drop the price on the iPod like you suggest, but I have a feeling it might be more like:

    10GB = $449

    5GB = $349

    Don't know why I feel that way, maybe so if (or is it when) they upgrade the iPod and it comes in cheaper than I expected, I'll be even more happy!

    Edit: I can't even get my own numbers right! Need to stop Director for a while and take a break!

    Add $100 for Canada if this <a href="http://www.sycorp.com/levy/index.htm"; target="_blank">http://www.sycorp.com/levy/index.htm</a>; happens

    i'm guessing the 5gig ipod would go down to $300. at that price point, many people have said they would buy it so i think there would be enough demand at this price point to keep sales going for anther 4-6 months

    New iPod $399

    Old iPod $384.

    A very Apple pricing scheme.

    Everyone seems to assume that they would have both a 5GB at a lower price and a 10GB model, but it seems to me that Apple generally updates products with better specs, but keeps them at the same price. It is entirely possible that they might just keep the price point as it is, but increase the HD to 10GB. Of course it would be better if they a cheap model to dispell some of the complaints about the ipod's price, but then they would have to be careful in their pricing so as not to make one or the other model unattractive.

    On the absurd Canadian taxation scheme (where they 'd put a per GB tax on the internal storage of a device). It may become a problem in other markets aswell. Apple better think about it.

    Two ways around it, that I can see. 1, sell the iPod 2 as a voice recorder (with a built in Mic) and only unlock the Mp3 functionality through a download from Apple's site. I don't think anyone would really be fooled by that.

    so,

    2, At the risk of a little extra initial expense, make the drive swappable. Everything about the current iPod remains as is. The 32MB buffer stays, and the form factor and battery remain almost identical. Except, instead of enclosing the drive, sell the iPod with a type 2 Card slot. Apple can get a good deal by buying a crap load of drives. Perhaps even bare ones that they can put their own PC-card shell on. They could even sell their own removable PC-card HDD's to pro digicam users, or make it interchangeable with an Apple branded MPEG4/still/quicktime camera.

    You now buy iPods and drives seperately (from the same order page) but packaged seperately. I can't see how Apple could then be taxed, the drives are no longer part of the internal storage of the machine. They not just for iPod, they're for PDA's ? and cameras too!

    I don't think this will happen, but it might if law makers force Apple's hand.

    Is this a Canadian thing only?

    If so, I don't expect Apple to care one bit. After all our market is so small for them to concern themselves over a tax slapped on by our government.

    I heard there was a site that Canadians could log onto and express their opinions about this new proposed tax. Unfortunately, I don't know what it is.

    isn't Canada in a pretty bad recession. I don't think their govt really wants to reduce consumption of consumer devices by upping the price. every1 knows that the price goes thorught the manufacturer and onto the consumer (look at cigarettes, there like $15 U.S.). Canadians could put up the cost of driving across the border, to an apple store, buying the 'pod and returning. It seems like a ridiculous tax, and I don't think it'll pass. but i'm not a canuck, so it wouldn't affect me so much anyway.

    I don't think Apple has redesigned the 'pod to fit a swappable hddr scheme. Though i think that'd b a good idea though (so when it fills up, some1 can buy a bigger one, w/o replacing the whole thing).

    The online Apple Store is offering refurbished 5GB iPods right now for $339. They come with the same 90-day limited warranty. Good deal?

    If it remains only Canadian (and it passes) then you're all absolutely right, we'll only get tax free iPods from Apple if we hitch up the dog seld and mush our way to Buffalo.

    However, with a great many HD based MP3 players coming to market in the form of multi-GB MP3 servers for your home and car stereo, it is possible that similar taxes might find their way into more than one international market (and possibly the US) Only then.

    Either way, a PC-card drive HDD iPod might be cool (if a little un-Apple) Imagine just being able to buy more HDD's for your iPod.

    I'm sorry to interrupt but I was going to post a topic and I saw this one, but if the next iPod is released, when would it be? Like what month or if possible, more specific. Thanks.
