The Stooges Reunite

Updated 09:08 PST Sat, Mar 15 2003

The Stooges are reuniting for their first show in 28 years. Iggy Pop, Ron Asheton (guitar) and Scott Asheton (drums) will take to the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival April 27. Special guest Mike Watt will fill in on bass for David Alexander, who passed away in 1975.

It's fitting Watt should be included in the Stooges' lineup. Along with Ron, he formed Wylde Rattz and has toured with the Ashetons in the past. At last year's All Tomorrow's Parties, the Ashetons joined Watt and J. Mascis for a set of Stooges tunes.

The Stooges reunion comes as the band just completed four new songs, set to appear on Iggy's upcoming album this summer. The disc also features tracks by Iggy solo, with his band The Trolls, and with San Francisco's Green Day.

For the young 'uns who aren't quite clear on who The Stooges are, here's a brief history lesson.

They were formed in the late ?60s and immediately made their mark as a raunchy, raw and rocking band. Although they had legions of fans underground, their primitive sound, Iggy's on-stage antics (which included cutting himself) and hard core drug addictions didn't exactly win them public approval.

The group disbanded after only three albums, but remained legendary figures in the punk world.

Just passing this on to the old school punks out there. This will be an awesome show. Sounds like the album will rock too.

I know Iggy & The Stooges were on the '97 ballot for the R&R Hall of fame. Maybe this is another "push" to get in... <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" />

Cool. Welcome back! I love punk, hardcore, (some) metal and "indie rock".
