I think the current version of the Apple mouse, with the charging port on the base is the same pursuit of form over function that gave us the MacBook Pro keyboards.
The famous Apple balance between liberal arts arts and engineering has been skewed too far to the arts side for about five years. What should have happened is that the designers kept working on the design until it didn’t need to be unusable when charging. Instead it is clear they came up with the design they liked, and any changes were not tolerated, and the engineers then told to come up with a charging solution. In other words, the mouse was Ived.
My solution is to keep a wired mouse in the drawer below my iMac. So it isn’t a deal breaker, just an annoyance. However, I dont see why someone upset by a temporary decrease in functionality, which is in fact a lack of the magic expected in an Apple device, should be abused.
Aremotely charged mouse would definitely be a Magic Mouse.
The company Apple has been working with is Energous (WATT). Many people think otherwise due to poor performance by the company financials but they have been working side by side since 2014. I know this and many of my colleagues know this. What I have seen is unbelievable and out of a movie.

That's not really a secret. We mentioned it on the 1st page of comments.
How big a solar cell would it take these days to keep these devices charged?
I mean the whole surface of grey mouse could be a cheap thin film cell with a smaller battery.
The light available indoors is probably insufficient for a rapid charge, and attempting to use it while charging it would cover most of the solar cell surface, so nearly the same problem as the dumb mouse socket location on their current rechargeable.
It's funny, I just had to replace the batteries in my iMac's trackpad yesterday. For whatever reason, it's been burning through AA batteries and I thought that it would be great to have a more seamless process for keeping it charged. For the small amount of charge needed to run a keyboard and trackpad or mouse, the wireless charge may actually be enough to keep the devices running with just a very small battery to make startup happen faster.
Yea but what you’re using isn’t even current. The newer Magic Trackpad is a dream. Entirely force touch, and recharges via Lightning, maybe once per 2 months. Keeping a lightning cable dangling nearby isn’t exactly uncommon or inconvenient either.
The mouse has a tendency to only alert you at 2% remaining charge and then you have to go
for half an hour in the middle of a work session. I'd prefer a mouse that could have a cable attached for charing while being used.
I've posted this at least ten times ... "put the frickin' port in the mouse's ass!' Then you could keep working as it charges. I've had to dig out an old wired mouse that is just horrible to use, so I can keep working when my Magic Mouse II dies. Working on multiple screens often in DTR it is easy to miss a 2% warning.
This is exactly why I kept my original Magic Mouse. I use rechargeable AA batteries, and always have a fresh set. When i get the warning (10 percent or less), I simply pop in the fresh set and keep going. This is still the best version of the mouse. I still prefer a mouse slightly over a track-pad so I'll see what happens on my next upgrade..
Perhaps Steve Jobs' phrase "Bag O Hurt", in which he was referring to Blu-Ray, also applies to AirPower. There are potential safety issues. There are potential health issues. There are regulatory issues. There are reputation issues at stake in which Apple wants to be known as a Green company but this device draws power all the time. There may be something better coming up the pipe.
