Well, seeing as Mac O' the Isles had taken the liberty to rebrand himself as Sir Mac O' the Isles (mind you, he could really have been officially knighted and if so I heartily encourage Sir Mac O' the Isles to profer forth the details of said knighthood and in particular to share with us a picture or two of the ceremony!) I figured that after your many years of service to the AI community you too ought to be enlisted into the AI knighthood.

Now it is true that only the Queen of England can declare such knighthoods and I am far from royalty, and certainly no queen. But it is also true that the AI Fora do not fall under the remit of only one principality and so knighthoods could be conferred by numerous figureheads of various different countries. And, incidentally, I do happen to know that a certain <a href="http://users.erols.com/ziring/escher_bio.htm"; target="_blank">Escher</a>

was knighted in 1955 in Holland with the "Knighthood of the Order of Oranje Nassau", although I do believe (correctly?) that your AI name is not homage to this great artist.

In any case, Mandricard may be willing to knight able subjects by touching them on each shoulder with his new iPod when it should be updated, released and delivered forthwith!

    I remain your faithful servant,

I remember I was a lurker before the black out. I was at work one day and went to show a co-worker appleinsider (I worked at a school in a tech department full of mac users) Well anyways I go to appleinsider.com and nothing loads. I remember thinking well its probably some server maintenance, I`ll check back tomorrow...

Then there was that whole flamingo site that was supposed to replace AI. I remember reading about that at Maccentral in a comment to some article... Anyways that site could never touch AI

    Long live AI! <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" />

Thank you for explaining the full legitimacy of the knighthood you just conferred upon me, Retrograde.

Interesting. I had no idea Morits Cornelis was knighted. You are indeed correct that my AI name does not refer to M.C. Escher's name, but instead to my own. Incidentally, however, our (last) names are the exact same. The only difference is that M.C. is from the Dutch branch of the family, while I am from the Swiss branch.

It looks like poor Mandricard will have to wait again after another, especially harrowing, false-alarm Tuesday. But to get back on topic, I would certainly welcome Mandricard in this thread, being that he shares many of our good old memories.

Ahh, Escher. Those were the days, before we had faux-subnotebooks from Apple.

Hope springs eternal (a nod to Mr. Mandricard),

Ooh, Jonathan. I love that new expression, faux-subnotebook. No wonder you're at the G-place. Maybe I should change my sig.

Should it be Sir Mandricard? I think he deserves it for his endless patience and eternally springing hope. And while we're at it, how about Sir Retrograde and Sir Jonathan as well? Can you configure vB automatically to add "Sir" to usernames once they've been members for say two years?

I joined December 2001. I was looking for information on the upcmoing iMac (wasn't everybody). There hasn't been a season of hype quite like MWSF02 since then, has there?

Anyway, it has been interesting to read some of the history. Hope AI stays around long enough that I can one day reminisce in a thread such as this...

Man, i remember, I have registered twice, once before the black out and once after (current)

I remember when AI was a "real" (in the loosest sense) rumor site and it had some respect as one

now, it is just a really nice looking forum.

I was nebagakid, am nebagakid, and one day I hope to become nebagaman

Probably not much earlier as the forums opened in November of 1998.

I just actually singed up tonight, but have been lurking for years.. even way before the worker bee incident. javascript:smilie('') even back then people goofed on MOSR (even though they did actually have some right info back then, but they probably got it from somewhere else(remember the cube descriptions?) javascript:smilie('')

I can't exactly remember when I showed up. I wasn't one of the old guard, the sentinels or whatever. I caught the second wave, when Kasper and friends changed the name to AppleInsider, and just when the color scheme was changed from the black and bondi blue scheme to this general scheme. Everyone else then was very technically knowledgeable, so I basically kept my mouth shut in all those chip flamefests in the Future Hardware forum and asked stupid questions every now and then. Never ventured into AppleOutsider, and tended to keep to the software fora.

    the G-Place, huh?

I tell you, Escher, I question my presence here more and more as time passes. The administration is, at best, a cluster****. I'm currently battling them on multiple fronts: (no, your promise of four years of on-campus housing is actually a binding contract... ) and also trying to decipher why all my classmates seem to have nifty internships lined up for the summer at places like the IMF, Lloyd's, and J.P. Morgan.

Did I miss a memo or something?

As for vB automatically changing names at a certain point, i'm afraid to report it's not quite in our grasp. However, you will find a nice surprise in your profile upon reaching the 1000 post milestone.

Perhaps I should confer the 1000+ privileges to certain, *cough* Elite members?

Well, I remember a friend's profs at Wharton calling Harvard and Stanford the H-place and the S-place, respectively. So I figured G-place would work for your alma mater.

Don't despair, Jonathan. Most university administrations suck ass. When they get too obnoxious, I often remind them of the tens of thousands of dollars I paid and coninue to pay for tuition, and the bazillions I might give as an alumnus. That sometimes gets their ear. In any case, don't give up!

As for summer jobs, just remember that this is only your first summer. Right? I have tons of classmates that were camp counselors or book sales people for all three summers and did really well later on, i.e. went to top-10 grad school or became fancy i-bankers in NYC. My freshman year roommate worked at Eastern Mountain Sports and bummed around Colorado and Europe. He's now at Harvard law. Do you have any family connections? Influential friends or neighbors? If so, work those connections and milk them for all they're worth. Have you tried offering your services for free to places where you'd like to work? If not, try that. You can always work at Starbucks for money.

LOL. Let me know if you find out. I might have missed it too.

Thanks. That'll give me something to look forward to over the next couple of months. I'm not having the greatest time finding a part-time or full-time job right now either. I sincerely hope the economy gets better by the time I graduate in December (and take the bar in February 2004, if I ever get there).

    Sounds like a plan.

It's my second summer. Last year, I did the bum-around thing. It wouldn't really concern me if complete and total morons weren't starting to mention the fact that they worked with the World Bank on loans to single mothers in Bangladesh. I mean, really... WTF!

Family connections are there, but not really in the areas that I want. It seems that my parents' friends and our neighbors all seem to be quite tied in with the new (republican :grumble) Maryland governor's office and cabinet. Beats me how.

I hope so too, for both of our sakes. It seems, luckily that i-finance and i-biz (the two areas that I would be looking to go into) seem to be surviving the downturn nicely.

Now to not get bio-terrorized in the next few weeks...

Yay, I just learned a new word. Throwing around xenologies, like GOED just did, is elitism at its best. Down with the plebs!
