Two 2019 iPhones rumored to have triple-camera, OLED display, USB-C, and be thicker

A new report claims that the 2019 iPhone lineup will include two models with a new triple-camera system, OLED screens, and USB-C charging. And, while unusual for Apple, the new models may be thicker to accommodate larger batteries.

According to the Japanese blog Mac Otakara, Apple's 2019 iPhone range will have two new triple-camera models. These are to be USB-C iPhones with OLED screens and a thicker chassis. This is claimed to be needed to support the previously-rumored triple-camera system in 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch iPhones. The report, citing unnamed supply chain sources, also says that these iPhones will ship with a Lightning to USB-C cable.

"The 6.1-inch OLED model might be thicker than the iPhone XS by about 0.15 mm," says the Mac Otakara site, "but the projection of the rear camera is reduced by about 0.5 mm, so the total thickness is increased by about 0.1 mm."

There are reported to be similar differences in the dimensions of the larger-screen version. "The 6.5-inch OLED model of the other three-lens camera specification seems to be about 0.4 mm thicker than the iPhone XS Max," continues Mac Otakara, "but the projection of the rear camera is reduced by about 0.25 mm, so it seems that the thickness is only increased by 0.2 mm."

There has been no independent verification of this specific rumor. As well as the now regularly reported triple-camera system, there have been rumors both that Apple is dramatically increasing the battery life of the iPhone. More, it's been claimed that Apple is having difficulty with the size of the battery and may be changing its shape.

A larger chassis would support the bigger sensor required for a triple-camera system but it would presumably also give Apple more room for a larger battery.

Mac Otakara has a mixed fairly consistent track record for reporting Apple hardware releases, but did incorrectly predict an iPhone SE 2 for 2018. Its sources for dimensions of the 2018 iPad Pro models were closer and the site did accurately report on Apple offering repairs for flood-damaged devices in Japan.

    Hmm. Big reason I’m still on my 7 is because I don’t like the thickness of the X or XS. I was waiting on them to fix this. Now it’s getting thicker?! :(

    You've got to be kidding. The X and XS are literally 0.6mm thicker than the 7..

    It sounds reasonable whether iPhone should be able to charge other devices like AirPods or Watch. Or maybe Glasses in future.

    I'm not a big fan of them but all my cases cancel out the bump so I never actually notice it.

    Having so many chargers and cables around, doesn't matter if Apple stays with lightening port but if Apple has usb-c in pipe line for iphone than sooner is better. About thickness or camera bump, every phone on market and in pipeline has it so just accept and live with.

    You've got to be kidding. The X and XS are literally 0.6mm thicker than the 7..

    Yeah I read the headline like ߘmp;nbsp;then kept reading and found out oh... the thickness of three human hairs side by side. 

    EDIT: to be clear -- I'm all for getting thicker to the point there's no camera bump. or whatever it doesn't matter to me. I just thought they might be getting rid of the camera bump, but alas, no.

    Oh wait!   0.15mm -- that's about the thickness of a piece of paper.

    Same here. Even with the super-svelte Apple leather case the "bump" on my iPhone XS is now a negative dimension.

    It is not triple camera, but three lens rear camera. So what is innovation? LG has five since 2018 in all flagship "V" models. Three lenses in reear camera and two lenses in front. Oh and they do have AI on those cameras as well so do not find it as missing.

    How about a new iPhone without any Face ID sensors and no notch?  Or it could have small notch for earpiece speaker, proximity sensor and camera. This new iPhone will have screen that nearly fills the front of phone.  It will have under screen fingerprint sensor for Touch ID.  Guess I am a dreamer on such a phone but I am not sold on Face ID yet.  Have done some research and there seems to be no real answer if Face ID is safe for eyes over long term use.  No real info one way or other about infrared hitting face\eyes.  There are videos that appear to show that the Face ID sensors on the phone are often active when the phone is in use and moved around in the hand.  Apparently, cameras can record this purple flash\flicker coming from the phone while it is invisible to the eye.  Also,  too many stories about eye strain with OLED.  Both of these issues make it hard to get on board with where Apple is going. Sorry...  guess will have to use iPhone 8 or 8 plus as long as possible until more is known.

    Currently, my biggest complaint with iPhones and iPads are the camera bumps. The smaller these get, the better. I want my devices to lay flat on a table. 

    I would rather they decrease the thickness towards 7 mm over incrementally increasing towards 8 mm too.

    Every object warmer than absolute zero radiates in infrared, including your own body, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

    No, it's 3 separate camera sensors on the back, so triple camera counts. That's clear from all the images. That one line where it refers to three-lens looks like a mis-translation.

    AI for the camera is software, not hardware, so not part of this rumour.

    I have wondered one can get Skin cancer from the IR in FaceID ever since Nilay Patel’s iPhonX review.    I can image that Apple did any long term medical studies of its us for 10 or more years.   That’s why I stick with 8Plus despite its inferior modem/antennas.  Of course everyone calls me crazy for being paranoid.

    iPhones have been getting progressively thicker and heavier since the iPhone 6, which was 6.9mm. The Xs is 7.7mm, which may only be .8mm difference, but that's also about 12% thicker. (It also weighs 177g, vs. 129g for the 6.) The 6s was 7.1mm, and the .2 mm difference between that and the 6 was definitely perceptible if you were not using a case--it just felt slightly "clunkier."

    It’s not IR that leads to cancer.  It’s UV.

    Given that there's no scientific rational for suspecting any of the conditions you describe, it seems reasonable to question the source(s) of such "reports." My guesses are paranoids in tinfoil hats, pseudo-scientists baiting clicks from aforementioned paranoids, or competitors seeding doubt about products that threaten their own.

My guesses are paranoids in tinfoil hats, pseudo-scientists baiting clicks from aforementioned paranoids, or competitors seeding doubt about products that threaten their own.
