Sure but doesn’t Facebook on the web run on any hardware? His larger point is correct. Every company takes swipes at other companies with different business models. I remember Jeff Bezos on stage saying Amazon wants to make money when you use their device not when you buy it. And Apple of course can have this huge commitment to privacy because their business model isn’t advertising. But the reason the open web exists as it is today is because of advertising. If people were charged for every website they went to and every thing they did on the web it would be a shadow of what it is today.

Hell, I wish Apple would do it. My friends have jumped off FB and started our own little groups in iMessage for sharing things. Way better. Apple should invest in some alternative.

Apple Social could combine tech from iMessage, iCloud, Arcade, News, iTunes, the AppStore and the iOS platform to make a secure but dynamic social platforms. They should start by buying one or two social app companies with good interfaces as a starting point, then build out something much bigger. They should also make it a priority and give it a VP of Social who answers to cook and invest on the scale of their Apple TV + initiative.
People did not commit to their previous efforts because they were not committed and it showed.
Thinking deeper. They could make it available to everyone, but have enhanced features tied to technology built into their devices. Like a video chat could be in 3d for iPhone or iPad users while it would just be a standard video chat and maybe render recordings in iCloud for playback in 3d for all to see.
This could crush competitors. Apple could also have a free version, but have an exclusive enhanced version for devices or users with an Apple subscription like Apple Music or Apple TV +. They could insulated users from tracking and the bombardment of competitive ads that are facilitated by Facebook and Google.

Basically selling data to anyone including bad actors who with enough information can piece together a profile to scam someone or steal their identity. That can be quite a bit more costly. Keep in mind that even those who are very selective about who enters their social media circles, have no control over what Info is share to a 3rd party. Including where you live, who your relatives and friend you interact with in real life are. This puts both parties at risk.

Well I rarely use Facebook and don’t use messenger. I assumed they worked on the web and cheaper hardware. Of course If Facebook is so awful Apple could ban it from their App Store.

Of course Facebook runs on the web but you need to own hardware to use the web, and you need an ISP. Unless, of course, as I mentioned, you go to the library or using someone else hardware.
