Disney+ offers four simultaneous streams at 4K for $6.99 per month

More details about Disney+, the major media corporation's subscription video service, have been made available months ahead of its launch with customers able to stream to up to four devices at up to a 4K resolution, without needing to pay for a higher tier of service.

Disney+ is currently anticipated to launch on November 12, providing consumers with access to the media conglomerate's vast catalog of video content for $6.99 per month, or $69.99 per year, without commercials. While seemingly low-priced compared to its competitors, it appears Disney will be aiming to offer an experience similar to higher-priced offerings from competitors.

Revealed by executives at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, CNET reports subscribers will be able to stream from up to four devices simultaneously and at a maximum resolution of 4K on compatible devices.

Interestingly, this will all be provided under the headline $6.99 subscription cost. By contrast, Netflix does allow up to four simultaneous streams and 4K resolutions, but only on its highest-priced tier at $15.99 per month, while its Basic plan allows just one stream at a time at standard definition, and still at a more expensive $8.99 subscription.

It will also be possible for users to set up seven profiles within a Disney+ account, making it useful for managing viewing habits for larger families. Rival Netflix provides five profiles at most.

There will be more than just the $6.99 subscription offering from Disney+, with a bundle including the core subscription, ESPN+, and an ad-supported Hulu plan will be available for $12.99 per month.

The streaming and resolution news arrives alongside other details about the content offered by Disney, including new content such as a CGI remake of the classic "Lady and the Tramp" and a live-action Star Wars TV series prequel to "Star Wars: Rogue One" and "The Mandalorian."

Disney's launch will likely have to compete with Apple's own original content push under the name Apple TV+. However, while details of content is known about Apple's service, finer details such as resolutions, device counts, and even the price, remain largely unknown.

Since I would never stream more than one video at a time, I wonder if I could get a lower priced plan.

    - Apple +. Disney +
    - both launching in Nov
    - both pushing G-rated “quality” content.
    - both available on all apple devices (in over a billion hands)

    Interesting.

Anyone else see a joint venture type of package ?

(wishful thinking- because I’m an Apple investor and honestly- Apple just doesn’t have the content)

Damn.  Disney ain't joking around.  Super aggressive pricing to introduce the service.  Probably gonna just get a yearly and call it a day.  Between Disney, Netflix, and Amazon... I'll be set.

Pretty sure $7 is the floor.

Looks like Disney is using the “PornHub or method” to destroy the competition— readily available inexpensive content that will force competitors out of business.  No wonder Disney is saying it will take years before Disney* is profitable, by then the competition will be on the ropes.  I suspect Apple will abandon it’s media attempt, Netflix will be worth pennies on the dollar, and the the other media companies will be unable to monetize their streaming businesses.

Competition is good. While it lasts, of course.

Why do people keep saying this? They're not going to provide R-rated content. That's the limit, not 'G'.

Why would Apple "abandon" it's media attempt? That's absurd. They have enough cash and generate enough profit to break even or make a loss on this for a very, very long time. If they feel like lowering the pricing is required, they could do that do. This isn't an initiative they'd be willing to abandon so easily.

I never really considered that Apple would give up its media ambitions - I just supposed it would take 5+ years for it to really gain traction.  I think Apple could conceivably ditch their effort if subscription rates are well below expectations for 3-4 years.  I don’t think Apple wants to be seen with a flagging product in their line-up.  Disney has been doing media for a long time and they are obviously not joking around given all the acquisition of studios they have made and attractive pricing on their offering.  They will own a segment of the market that they play in even if it takes 5 = 10 years to be really profitable.

The only way I see the multiple streaming services model working out is if the providers keep subscriptions low enough that many consumers will not choose between them but rather subscribe to most, if not, all of them. Significantly below $10 a month per service, one could imagine many households simply signing up for all of them. Back when Netflix first launched it was pretty much the only game in town and provided a broad range of content from quite a few sources. Now we have some of those sources branching out so the obvious solution is for Netflix to adjust its pricing accordingly. If that means a little less content to compensate then that’s what Netflix has to do to survive. The good new is that the number of potential customers is immense. Attract enough of them with a low enough subscription fee and you can make a lot of money. Try to approach this as a battle of content providers and there will be blood. Unnecessary, I think.

$69/year seems pretty cheap, but these subscriptions do add up. Maybe get a family member (or friend) to split the cost?

I think they are just undercutting Netflix to finish them off by taking their subscribers and putting them even more into debt. Once the competition has buckled, you'll see a yearly price hike by Disney.

I have to agree for a different reason.

I loaded up the Matrix (all 3) on VUDU, because it was a "Freebee" and on the OLED you could totally see compression black banding.  I couldn't take it.
So I went back to my Blu-Rays (HD) and watched the 1st but couldn't take HD.  I wanted the FULL Dolby Effect. (Vision+Atmos), well last night checking on John Wick 3, Apple loaded up a $4.99 for each of the 3 Matrix Movies!, I was like I gotta compare, result:

The quality of Apple Compressed 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, is INSANE compared to VUDU, the matrix movies could have been just a quick "piece-o-work" but still, 2nd movie tonight, Revolutions Sunday night.

Apple stands on the QUALITY of their Encodings, so...  to each their own preference...

So with all the “G” rated options there is space in the market for people that want stories that are closer to the realities of life be that in violence, sex or language. It does not mean that I’m looking for porn / snuff. Just the freedom of directors to tell the story in best way without needing to worry about meeting a G rating. Streaming content rated R for adults. Shame we dont have HBO down under.

An R rated star wars , just to get some better dialouge would be sweet.

The “freebee” version is not the same as the UHD version on VUDU, so of course it’s going to look different because you are not comparing like for like. It’s been proven that both Apple and VUDU have the same quality when it comes to the 4K. I have tons of movies that go to both in 4K and they look the same on both platforms.

Great we were just wondering this yesterday. Now is Disney gonna keep 4K away from iTunes sales? If so, F*** them.

I wouldn't call him that. What if he's a single user? I mean he'll never use more than 1 stream. 6.99 is cheap regardless.

Apples content will be great and gather its own crowd. You're crazy if you think Apple can't cover costs and will shut down their media arm.
At worse Apple can license their media to Disney.

“SOME” of Apples content will be great. Not all because some will flop just like every other service that does this.
