Apple applies for trademark on 'Slofie'

Apple has filed for a trademark on the term "slofie," after they debuted the term and feature at their latest Apple Event.

During this year's September Apple Event, Apple announced that the new iPhone 11 line would feature a front camera that could record at 120 frames per second. The effect, when slowed down, produces a slow-motion video-- perfect for dramatic selfie videos.

They called them "Slofies," a portmanteau of "slow" and "selfie," and accompanied them with a clever demo video. In the video, a young woman is attempting to take the perfect slow-motion selfie, aided by her younger brother.

The term also appears on the iPhone 11 pre-order page, where Apple states, "Introducing the slofie. Everything looks cooler at 120 fps, even if you're just saying cheese, waving hi, or tossing your hair in the breeze." On the iPhone 11 Pro product page, it reads "Why selfie when you can slofie?"

It's clear that they're hoping the feature helps sell the new iPhone 11 line, which has also received plenty of additional camera upgrades.

A search through the U.S.Patent and Trademark Office database shows that Apple is now applying for a U.S. trademark on the term "slofie."

The trademark may be to prevent the creation of knock-off slofie apps, or to prevent other companies from using the term within their apps and devices.

Apple may also be looking to avoid another Animoji situation, in which the company was being sued by an app developer who had trademarked the term "Animoji" in 2015.

Along with their recent commercials... more proof their marketing department has stumbled across some horrible horrible drugs.

I've got a face for radio, so not so much into the selfies. But for all those folks impressed by their own image, I suspect this will be a hit, both the feature and the marketing name.

Of course it will be. Kids eat this type of crap up. Why? Not at all practical, it's just fun.

It’s not just kids. I see middle-aged people taking selfies and sending Bitmoji all the time.

(I think one reason some of my friends like to send Bitmoji is they always seem to lack wrinkles and their “bitmoji-self” always appears years younger than reality, ha ha!)

Slofie-Shmofie. I would rather the iPhone 11 Pro OLED screen refreshed itself at 120 fps.

It's either that or they are using an app like Facetune and take the smoothing features a bit too far to where their face looks like a wax figure.

Sometimes adults should have some fun too. I take a lot of selfies when I meet people, or with friends. I don't publish anything to social media, it's just a nice reminder of the people I have met or the times I have had with friends. Memories are nice to have and taking selfies makes it easy.

If Apple didn't trademark it every other vendor would.

Apple doesn’t give a rat’s ass what tech blogs and their trolls think about them or their advertising. Apple consistently gets awards for its marketing and that you think it’s horrible is a good sign they are on the right track.

    GREAT.

Keeps them safe from the knockoffs. I wish they could trademark "Swipe", "Emoji" and "Scroll" unfortunately those words already existed though with different meanings in the past. Now all the knockoffs pretend like it's their thing not Apples.

Now time for Huawei to use "Slowfie" to avoid lawsuits like they did Mimoji. (Or was that Xiaomi? Can't tell with all the knockoffs nowadays)

This is such a great feature for boxing matches.

But my old iPhone 6 even does the slow mo thing.

The 11 pro max should be here tomorrow or Friday so I’ll get to test this soon enough.

Cant wait to put the camera through its paces.

This is for the "selfie" front camera. It's new.

Probably not best for boxing machines.
