    I like judo myself, and weight-lifting, and will even do my 30 minutes on the bike, on high, but it hasn't done my waist much good. I really don't care to get ripped, or overly muscle bound, just strong enough in the right places to throw people around should the need arise. If I weren't such a big pussy I'd probably be pretty good at judo. I keep flirting with the idea of taking up boxing, but the workout just looks too intense and I'll have to get hit in the face a bunch before I get any good at it. I got choked and twisted enough before I got OK at this.

    Yes I do. Exercising for exercising's sake has never been my thing. But I do love to get a good game of basketball or ultimate frisbee once in a while. Since I'm getting older, I've found that I need to workout regularly to keep my skillz up (what little skillz I've got). So I do it. Only to be able to play when I want to. :/ Aging sucks.

    Hmm. I hate excercising only when it's cold outside. In the summer I run 10k every day, just because I really enjoy it. (and at about 36 minutes per 10k too). But I hate the cold. In the cold, I lift weights and play indoor sports. My new love is indoor soccer. It's almost like hockey. . .



    Anyway, I love winning. Maybe that's why I keep trying. But lately my biggest wins have come in a fledgling sport known as beer pong.

    I was at one point training to get it down to 31 or 32, but then I realized that this is pointless. Those are solid NCAA times, and there's a lot of pain between a 36 and a 31 that is essentially unecessary for a recreational runner.

    Whenever I get bored watching TV, I try to watch TV while sitting/bouncing/rolling around on my big exercise ball. It makes it so much fun. But I had never thought of using it while sitting at my desk!! I need to get a taller ball, though. What a great idea.

    Most exercise I get is swimming/running. I have baddish knees/ankles...so high impact stuff is generally a bad thing.

    Shetline, totally right there with you....except I haven't had my breakthrough into finding the time/place/courage to start doing exercise.



    My neighborhood's not a pedestrian-safe place to bike, jog or walk in. It's a mega-hassle to strap the bike onto the car, and then I don't know where I'd go if I DID strap it onto the back of the car.



    I don't have rooom for a stationary bike or any other kind of equipment.



    I don't feel confident enough to go to the gym by myself....have no idea how to dispel that "fear"/discomfort.



    I love to walk and hike, but there aren't any convenient hiking trails near me, and exercise should be something more than an inconvenient occasional day trip.



    So, I know where you are...kind of.



    Anyway, hope to get into something, somehow this year.

    I never really exercised; I used to always think that I was pretty much immune. I was always able to eat whatever I want and pay no price. Since I have been at college, that has started to change a little bit. But when my dad died (heart attack) last year, it was a major wake up call... My doctor warned me about my eating habbits and my lack of exercise afterwards, especially since my family has a bad history of heart disease.



    So I started running last year, and I didn't enjoy it, but I didnt hate it. Listening to music helped, but I hated switching CD's while i was on the treadmill and I rarely wanted to listen to albums, I wanted variety. But the health factors were always in the back of my mind, so I kept going. This summer I bought an iPod thinking that it would be perfect for me when I ran. And it has been.



    I have found that there are certain songs that I play on it that give me such a rush and so much energy to continue when I am running a long distance. I know a bunch of you said that music hasn't helped you with running. But I say try it again. Try different kinds of music and see how they make you feel when you run.

    I suppose I'm a bit luckier than you...my *town* (~2,500 people) is very pedestrian/biker friendly. There's even a nice 5 mile or so bike path, brand new concrete over where the old railroad used to be. Flatter than hell, you can maintain 30 on it easily.

    It's nice to see that someone else can identify with how I feel... especially since so many in the rah-rah crowd hasn't been able to resist chiming in with plenty of "Exercise? Oh, boy! I LOVE it!"



    I've been regularly riding my exercise bike since shortly after starting this thread. I know it's good for me, so I'm going to try to stick with it, but there's no way I'll ever love it. I'll try to get a some weight training back into my routine after a while too, since I know that was an important part of the good level of fitness that I'd achieved once before.



    I guess the truth of the matter is that, for the most part, people who don't enjoy exercise simply don't exercise. You don't hear much from them.



    Most of those who do exercise regularly (while not discounting that it still takes some discipline to stick to a routine) do so because they enjoy it. These people constitute "the voice of exercise." Practically all the advice you'll ever get, all the books and articles and tips you'll ever read, come from them -- and, for the most part, they can't really relate to people who don't enjoy working out. I think they're all certain that the rest of us merely have to find the right activity, and when we do we'll be loving exercise every bit as much as they do.



    Those who hate exercise, but do it anyway, especially if they manage to stick with it for many years in a row as I had before, have got to be rare. It would be nice to hear more often from other people like that.

    When i was in highschool, i HATED exercise, and i was by no means fat. I had little fat on my body.

    Anyway, I hate to exercise too. There are so many things I would rather be doing. So what I have done is combine a couple things into my CV workout. I now play video games, read a book or magazine or surf the web while I workout. The video game playing has really helped. I can now do 30 minutes of running on the treadmill and not even realize. I am always thinking I'm done already? But I haven't got past this board yet. I will keep going a little longer. For weight training, it isn't as good. I pick a place in the game that has a natural break. I then do a set everytime I come to that break. For example, my current favorite game is Sega Beach Spikers. Everytime I have to switch sides ( every 5 points scored ), I do a set. Its not as good but it is better than nothing.



    BTW, if you decide to do this, you should get a gamecube with wavebird controllers so you don't get tangled and trip on the cords.
