The imac stand with iPod docking bay is a sort of a prototype. Basically it brings two USB and two firewire ports to the front and allows you to plug the ipod in very easily. They may or may not be making it an actual selling product. They said it depended on customer reaction (I was positive about it to them, since it seemed like a cool idea).

The new cinema display looks pretty much like the old one, although the resolution is a bit finer. I don't think you could tell the difference just by glancing at them, but it is very good that it is now HD resolution.

All in all kind of disappointing. We expected the 10GB ipod, but most seemed to think the 5GB version would come down in price, and it hasn't. Oh, and I'll say it -- the engraved ipod thing is really stupid.

In other words, it does what Apple should have done in the first place, i.e., put some USB&FW ports on the back of the iMac base for permanently connected peripherals, and put some ports on the front for things like the iPod. So now Apple is going to charge for a base that fixes a design flaw in the iMac. Brilliant, but not as clever as the iMac price increase.

As for the iPod pricing, what a joke. It would have been cool if the iPod simply gained a 10GB HD and remained at $400, and the older 5 GB model dropped to around $300-350 or whatever. But $500 for an MP3 player?? Sorry, that's absurd. I'm sure plenty of rich idiots are going to buy them, but Apple isn't going to gain market share with such products. If anything products like these will reinforce Apple's reputation as a niche computer maker catering only to the needs of over paid professionals who have no sense of value or worth--the sort of shallow, superficial lunkheads who shop at Sharper Image to impress their friends.

Damn, just when Apple seemed to be headed in the right direction, they go and fu[k it all up. Apparently they learned nothing from the Cube debacle.

The base is from a third party maker, not Apple.

actually, it might actually be nice to have a couple ports on the front of the computer. you could put a USB and Firewire port just underneath the superdrive slot. you can put a door on it like the superdrive door. it would be nice so you could have a shorter cord for the keyboard; directly connecting to the computer instead of having to go around to the back.

to do this, they'd have to do a redesign that's probably cost more than it's worth

    JYD,

That was one of the worst posts I've seen from you.

Just because the "magical" MWT date has come and gone, Apple is supposed to just drop the price because "it's time"? What a boneheaded notion.

The iPod rocks (not that you would know, or probably even be planning to buy one).

And what do you mean by, "over paid professionals who have no sense of value or worth". Have you even priced the competition? Do you even know what "value" or "worth" is, yourself?

I suppose you think the $399 Rio Riot is a better deal. So what if it's clunky and takes both hands to use it right?

Maybe great comparison articles like this one will make people realize what a better deal the riot is eh?/sarcasm

Oh, $100 more for double the space. Gee, what a rip?

    Back on Topic:

That G3 beer server is . Cool pic.
