Apple's latest iOS 13.5 beta adds new features and settings all designed to aid in the fight against COVID-19. AppleInsider digs into the latest update to see what is coming as the update approaches release.

The new beta of iOS 13.5 is actually the third beta of iOS 13.4.5 that Apple had to relabel due to the inclusion of its COVID-19 tracking SDK. This new SDK and API will allow certain developers to create apps that are able to aid in contact tracing those who are diagnosed with COVID-19.

Aside from this SDK being included, Apple also included a toggle within settings to disable COVID-19 exposure notifications. Currently, in the beta, it is opt-out rather than opt-in. Right now, though, it still needs the user to download an official app that doesn't exist yet to utilize the feature.




How to disable the COVID-19 Exposure Notification on iOS 13.5

  • Head to Settings

  • Go to Privacy

  • Select Health

  • Choose the COVID-19 Exposure Notification and toggle it off

On Face ID-enabled iPhones, it is slightly more difficult to unlock your phone while wearing a face mask. With this update, Face ID will recognize the mask and automatically prompt you to enter your passcode, rather than waiting for Face ID to time out.

Previously, you'd have to swipe up and wait for Face ID to fail before Apple would prompt you to enter your pin. Now, it is instant when a mask is detected.

Apple will be releasing iOS 13.5 in the coming weeks alongside updates for Apple Watch, Apple TV, iPad, and Mac.

Group FaceTime

Users now have the option to turn off Group FaceTime's dynamic zoom effect, which automatically enlarges a participants window when they speak. Instead, users can select which person to focus on by tapping on a new static window interface.

    IMO the OP rarely means for his posts to be taken seriously. He likes to kid around, roil the waters a bit, but doesn't actually mean what he says in many cases.  Take his posts as someone having a bit of fun at our expense. :)

    Any indication from the release noted if the stuck migration reminders issue is solved with this release?

    You don’t have to wait for Face ID to time out. When you swipe up, you can tap on the words Face ID and it will revert to the passcode screen. :)

    Actually, you can train Face ID to work with a module motorcycle helmet when the chin bar is up. I have trained my system to do so provided my face and eyes are visible. You must not have your face in shadow however, nor have dark glasses on as it needs to map your open eyes. I do deliveries so need to open phone if it locks while nav function is needed.

    It works a lot better with polarized sunglasses (provided the setting is not "ALL" to bright.

    COVID-19 always on notifications does that mean Bluetooth always on as well? The one cannot work without the other right? Opt-out is good to have but I would rather see this not being part of the Core of iOS. 

    Looks like Corona is here to stay for years to come why otherwise bother to building it in the Core of iOS? Or is Corona defeated soon and is this just another way to track & trace who you have been with lately?

    It was only a matter of time before this was going to be added to the OS. Now that it is here it will never go away. “You never let a serious crisis go to waste.” I’d note the source of that quote but those less understanding of its true meaning would load these comments with a bunch of garbage pretzel logic. You can look it up.

    I totally agree with you and I know the source of that quote, sadly. I thought that the tracking component was Opt-in as well as you have to download an app-is this not correct?

    There is nothing in iOS 13.5 that interests me beyond the possibility in it allowing my Watch to be updated.

    13.4 somehow prohibits the update while giving me frequent notifications on my Watch that 6.1 is available. There's an additional issue of my MBP, phone, and Watch not playing nice when trying to use Apple Pay on a website with my laptop. If 13.5 doesn't fix it, then I'll have to try reinstalling the phone from backup or as new. I've tried everything short of that.
