Is iMac G4 revision way off now?

considering they supposedly are barely making any money on the iMac as it is... so much that they had to raise prices... I guess the outlook of an iMac revision anywhere within the next 6 months is out of the question huh <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

damn, I was really hoping for a 17 inch model at MWNY.

Upgrading the processors probably would not change margins.

Waiting six months from now would put the next revision in September - MacWorld Paris or Seybold. Neither of these are consumer shows.

I'm still optimistic for a bump at MWNY - that's four months away, and plenty of time for component prices to stabilize. I'm sure Apple's not just sitting on their hands on this issue. I mean, the price-hike thing is obviously a drastic measure, so it must be part of some overall plan to get their supply & release schedule back on target. The target for the first iMac rev was, I think, New York. These corrections (the price hike + whatever's going on behind the scenes) have plenty of time to make that target viable again.

Apple's not quite down to 3 month update cycles, but they're not quite so bad as 9 months between revs, either.

But I still wouldn't hold my breath for a 17" model.

Interestingly enough, it is now revision B. No changes, but just a way to distinguish the price hike from backorders.

Well, okay. I see your point - it's certainly not a pro show. But what have they ever unveiled at Paris? They weren't there last year, but my memory's fuzzy on prior years. Am I forgetting something?

If the LCD shortage keeps up, I doubt we'll see a 17 inch iMac this year. The price would just be too hgh. I think this model hinges on the LCD market and how it pans out. As for a speedbump, I think we'll see one at Apple Expo Paris with 133 MHz mobos and G4s at 733 low end, 867 mid range, and 1 GHz high end.

they should get all the pre-orders sent and maybe a month after that before thinking about an update...maybe....maybe not. but they should get all those pre=orders filled

i could see a september update. that' would work well, but i could also see a minor spec bump is a possibility....i think i'm going to stick with my september prediction

I think in Apple's (the design engineers) mind, the iMac was designed with a 15" LCD. A 17" is either way off (a year or more) or they will wait for the 3rd version of the iMac. Especially now with LCD prices on the rise. At MWNY they should have at least a GHz G4 and possibly better video but not much more.

I disagree. I think the iMac team designed the new iMac with the future in mind, and designed the base to easily accomodate a 17 inch display in the future. It's definitely heavy enough.

I am OK with your prediction.BTW an upgrade of the graphic memory card will be nice : a geforce 4MX at the place of the geforce 2 mx.But the question is : shall we wait for something nice when we deal with Apple ?

An interesting situation would be if 15" LCDs became as expensive for Apple as 17" LCDs, or even more expensive.

If that were the case, would Apple upgrade the iMac to have a 17" display? Or would Jobs keep it at 15", just to spite everyone who says it should be 17"?

    Think more price bumps.

In an interesting, and associated, development, RAM prices fell on March 22 (the day after the keynote) Prices and supply were so good that buyers bid the RAM prices up a bit from the initial announcement, but overall they were down from previous weeks.

    Increasing RAM prices, eh Stevie?

And another point about LCD prices. An 18" (1280x1024) NEC flat panel that I previously could only find listed for 1299 (Canadian, not real, dollars) now lists, (as of this week) for exactly 1110 (again, Canadian dollars)

Wow, those LCD prices must really be climbing fast!

Compared to last fall the price we pay for memory for product we ship to customers more than doubled. Last fall a 256MB SIMM was roughly $25 and now it is about $60. A few per cent drop in that price doesn't help much.

I think there won't be a change in the iMacs till MWSF. Small chance of a speed bump or graphic card change before then but not much else.

There are many urban legends here at good ol AI. They never ever seem to go away, they are ridiculous but yet people still constantly use them. Lets take a look at them:

"The G4 is WAY too hot to be used in a portable" Well this one is all but dead but people still make a big deal out of the G4 heat, apparantly putting it in a Cube without a fan and a 1" thick Titanium case finally shut them up.

"The iMac will not be updated then...it's not a CONSUMER show" "The Power Mac will not be updated then, it's not a PROFESSIONAL show" This one will NEVER die. Power Macs have been updated or announced at almost every type of show possible. Seybolds. MacWorlds (both here and internationally). iMacs have been updated at all kinds of shows as well. It kills me that people still think that a Power Mac will not be updated at a MacWorld because it's a Consumer show or that the iMac will not get updated at Seybold or wherever else. It's just not the case. When it's ready and sales dictate it (i.e. slowing sales, stale specs) then it's done. What about all of the MacWorld's that the Powerbook has been updated and ANNOUNCED at? Why would Apple do that at a CONSUMER show? Please, let this urban legend die.

Applenut - I do not think we will see a 17" iMac anytime in 2002. Not if they are having cost issues with the 15".
