Apple Card offers users 1% Daily Cash back on all purchases and 2% when using Apple Pay. The 3% Daily Cash offer was initially restricted to Apple purchases, but since the Apple Card launch, transactions at a number of retailers can qualify for the rate.

As Panera noted in its announcement, it is the first restaurant to offer the 3% Daily Cash reward rate.

"More guests than ever are digitizing their wallets and opting for contactless payments as part of our new normal, and Panera wants to be part of that solution," the company wrote.

There are now a number of third-party retailers that support 3% Daily Cash, including Exxon Mobil gas stations, and Nike, T-Mobile.

Daily Cash back is one of the perks of the Apple Card. It's issued directly to a user's Apple Cash card at the end of each day.

What exactly is happening for a 3rd party retailer to qualify for 3% back? Are they paying Apple money?

When a customer uses a credit card the retailer pays a fee to the card company. The card company can reward customer with reward points. Up till now when you use the Apple Card  to buy Apple products at the Apple on line store or in the physical stores you would receive a 3% cash back reward. Panera is the first restaurant that Apple will reward you with 3% by using their card. Apple Card offers users 1% cash back  reward on all purchases and 2% on Apple products purchased anywhere.

It should be noted that these cash back rewards are put on your Apple Cash Card  (not the credit card) at the end of each day.

Minor correction: it’s 2% on *all* transactions “when you use your iPhone or Apple Watch...”  (not Apple products purchases anywhere), 3% on select (all at Apple physical, or online, and select merchants, now including Panera). 1% on all physical card purchases [swipe, insert, tap card] (or purchases online where you key in card details I believe).
