Mark Zuckerberg claims Apple's App Store charges 'monopoly rents,' stifles innovation

The comments specifically referred to Apple's ongoing saga with various gaming-related apps, including Epic Games. But they come just about one month after both Zuckerberg and Apple CEO Tim Cook testified before the U.S. House Judiciary committee about alleged anti-competitive practices at both of their companies.

During a webcast with employees on Thursday, Zuckerberg said that Apple has a "unique stranglehold as a gatekeeper on what gets on phones." He also claimed that Apple's App Store "blocks innovation, blocks competition" and allows the company to "charge monopoly rents," BuzzFeed News reported.

"That's innovation that could really improve people's lives," Zuckerberg said. "And Apple's just balking at it."

More specifically, Zuckerberg appeared to be answering a question about the ongoing Apple and Epic Games saga. For example, he called Apple's attempt to block Epic Games' Unreal Engine a "problematic" and "extremely aggressive move."

Apple was barred by a U.S. District Court from revoking the Unreal Engine developer account. That same court also denied an Epic Games request for a temporary restraining order that would restore "Fortnite" to the App Store, which was removed after Epic implemented a direct payment system in violation of Apple's guidelines.

The comments from Zuckerberg are only the latest illustration that there's no love lost between Apple and Facebook.

Just a day prior to Zuckerberg's webcast on Thursday, Facebook warned advertisers that new privacy features in iOS 14 could lead to up to a 50% drop in advertiser revenue.

On Thursday, Facebook also claimed that Apple blocked an update to its social media application that informed users of Apple's 30% cut of in-app purchases.

Earlier in August, Facebook complained that Apple forced it to release an "inferior" version of its Facebook Gaming app to be accepted onto the App Store. Prior reports indicated that Apple blocked the app at least five times due to various developer guideline violations.

The contentious relationship between the two tech giants stretches further back than that. In 2019, Facebook was found to be using its Enterprise Certificate to bypass App Store restrictions and get users to download a data-harvesting "research" app. Apple temporarily revoked the certificate -- a move that chaos at the social media giant.

Apple should respond, “Mark, you have exactly the kind of software company we are trying to protect our users from. So we will take your insult as a complement.”

For this to be true, there has to be no viable market alternatives. Yet iOS is not the majority market share, as Android provides a wide open plain of alternatives -- multiple app stores, as well as side-loading. There is inarguably room there for this supposed stifled innovation to thrive.

Apple cannot have a monopoly on their own store, no more than McDonald's has a monopoly on their own store & menu by not allowing Whoppers, or sushi vendors, etc...

I wouldn’t even use a tiny violin. Zuckerberg’s opinions are entirely unimportant. His company’s business model is abusive & offensive. His refusal to deal with hate mongering, spread of disinformation, and sales of ripoff products on his company’s platform is abusive & offensive.

Throwing rocks (“oh hey, let’s all pile on Apple for the wrong reasons”) at Apple, while living in a glass house... Zuckerberg can frell all the way off.

This. Facebook can afford Apple’s price, but Zuckerberg is accustomed to being his own monopoly. We’d all be better off without Facebook IMNSHO.

We knew this narrative would be coming because iOS will ding their ad revenue, as others pointed out.
The timing however, seems deflection from FB's failure to apply their own standards, which helped lead to a 17 year old crossing state lines illegally with a rifle, and killing 2 and maiming 1, in Kenosha.

What happened to Facebook's smartphone? Maybe it was too innovative.

So Facebook, you deny conservatives a voice on your platform, deleted countless positive posts about President Trump.
Facebook you are dishonorable for silencing a large portion of the country because you disagree with conservative values.
    Rot in hell!

And the iPhone user community is perfectly happy with that.

    Asshole.

Let's try posting this again, later in the day...

Why not have your Facebook app start-up with a transparency message how every click/action you make in this app will be used to profile your online persona/habits so we can make money selling that information?  Sounds like a fair request if they are complaining about Apple removing the blast message to their business model, no?

By “innovation that could really improve people’s lives” do he mean the innovation of violating millions of people’s trust and privacy to essentially hand the 2016 election to a Russian puppet? In order to profit? Like he did during the pandemic, where his wealth grew more than 50%?

Or does he mean improve by failing to take decisive action to eliminate foreign interference in the upcoming election? By putting a muzzle on said Russian puppet? Or is this just retaliation against Apple for protecting its customers privacy which happens to hurt your pocket?

I’m confused, Zuck. But sincerely, just stay in your own monopolistic lane and let Apple keep providing the end-to-end solution that billions of customers enjoy. After all, it’s just a game, so he a good sport, or take your ball and go home. The world won’t miss you :)

Zuck and FB walk on a rope bridge majority built by AAPL.  Same with the video game folks.  STFU or build your own bridge.  Lucky Cook doesn’t ban you for the misinformation and violence you foster and profit from daily.  Sorry.  You R wrong.  Just because you’re rich, don’t mean you’re right.
