A new rumor chimes in on ProMotion arriving with the "iPhone 13" and Apple may not release new iPhone SE until 2022, but it will arrive with 5G support, a dual-camera setup, and a larger display when it does.

According to display expert Ross Young, Apple won't release a new iPhone SE model in the spring of 2021. Instead, a successor to the low-cost iPhone arrives in the spring of 2022.

Those waiting for the update may be rewarded with several new technologies. Young says the new iPhone model will sport 5G support, a 6.06-inch display, and a dual-lens camera setup. It will reportedly retain a Touch ID sensor, though there aren't any details on fingerprint sensor location or bezel size.

As far as predictions for 2021, Young says that the "iPhone 13" models will sport 120Hz ProMotion displays with variable refresh rates, made possible through adoption of low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) backplanes.

The "iPhone 13" devices may also feature integrated touch display technology. That means a touch sensor patterned over the OLED panels, rather than a laminated layer. He says that will reduce panel thickness and could be lower-cost, "depending on yield."

The display analyst also said that the "iPhone 13 mini" and "iPhone 13" models would adopt the camera sensors and sensor size of the "iPhone 12 Pro Max." Camera sensor size will also bumped up on the two Pro models, says Young.

Additionally, China-based display maker BOE will join LG Display as one of the primary suppliers of panels for both 6.1-inch models, Young added.

Young, founder of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) made the claims about the devices, citing supply chain sources. Young also cited information Tokyo-based Mizuho Securities to corroborate predictions from DSCC.

Rumors -- including from accurate leaker Jon Prosser -- have suggested that the "iPhone 12" lineup will sport 120Hz displays. However, more recent reports suggest that the "iPhone 12" won't sport a variable display refresh rate.

Young has consistently bucked the idea of 120Hz displays on the "iPhone 12." He claimed that iPhones would require LTPO to make a ProMotion display possible, despite the fact that there are devices with 120Hz refresh rates but not LTPO.

Makes total sense. When Apple decided to include the latest processor in the SE this year, you could be pretty sure that they wanted this model to have some legs and not need a refresh after a year.

5G SE in 2022 is believable. One possibility is moving TouchID to power button increasing screen size in same SE frame but we will not until early 2022.

A friend of mine has one, and he says the 5G sucks ass unless you turn off LTE.  With LTE on he was getting less than 2 mbps, and with it off, he'd get 30 or more.  Quite a difference.  The area in which he lives has quite solid 5G support otherwise, and his kids' LTE phones work just fine, so it doesn't appear to be an LTE problem.

I have no idea how widespread that problem is, but he claims to have seen "quite a few complaints" online from other people with the same problem.

Yes. It took a minute to get used to going back to bezels and a smaller screen, but I very much prefer the compact size and Touch ID.

Not sure what you mean.  I really don’t think the current iPhone SE has 5G ability.  Unless you are looking at the misleading and absurd 5Ge logo that shows up that AT&T has been doing and what’s worse maybe that Apple has put up with it,  even now in iOS 14

Agreed. There is no way that Apple’s first 5G capable phone was going to be the SE.

Both my parents have one. My Mom upgraded from a 6 (or 6S, I forget) and it was my Dad's first Smartphone. When I was setting them up, I was very impressed with the phone. At $399, it really is a phenomenal value.

Huh?! The SE is not 5G capable in any way.

I hope they retain TouchID for the new SE. That would be my major wish.

Not sure what you talking ? Probably referring to 5G Samsung or some Chinese 5G phone but certainly not 5G iPhone SE.
Besides that, 2020 iPhone SE is excellent if you happen to be among those who like round touchid button iPhone.

Say if we look back, new SE would arrive 2024 as original was 2016. But because of bit outdated form factor and tech, it is reasonable to update it sooner with bezelless version. I was hoping that it will be based on iPhone 12 mini even with Face ID but they may use cheaper LCD display with thicker bezels to put camera and speaker into without notch. Technically it sounds possible it will be based on iPhone 11. Size and dual lens suggest that.
My big hope is still Touch ID under display not in power button as in iPad air 4. But afraid my wish will not be listened to.

    This sounds very reasonable.

The form factor of the SE will look very outdated in 2021. It is unthinkable to see it live on until mid 2022 at the earliest so I think we'll see it discontinued or updated earlier depending on general iPhone demand going forward.

Apple cannot afford to give away the cutting edge stuff like Samsung does!  It has to piece meal it out over several years and present it as “brand new” iPhone feature that Apple has just “invented”.

What every is the cheapest way to do it, Apple will do it that way.  Components are always for the SE model, 2-3 years old other then the SOC.  RAM will be minimum too!  Maybe Apple will release a new color too!

Oh, the future, you can never come fast enough... Also in the news: 2025 iPhone 17 will be brain-implantable, but that year’s SE will unfortunately have to be worn glued on top of the scalp.

All of this mask stuff makes me prefer touchID over faceid for obvious reasons.

Without iPhone 12 news we’ve just jumped ahead to 13?   Maybe my 7+ will go another year...
