The whole staggered PowerBook upgrades is very weird. If the 15" gets a 970, the 17" would have to also. Biggest and baddest has to stay 'bad', right?
I don't know how big the current 17" PB motherboard is, but is it possible that Apple can use a new 970 based moterboard in both the new 15" albook and the upcoming 970 17" PB?
This could be something, but it's likely nothing...

New Computer Requirement for Entering Students
February 4, 2003
Please note: the new computer requirement applies only to students entering in Fall 2003, or afterwards.
For over a half a century, Berklee College of Music has been committed to preparing our students for the musical, technological, and business necessities of the world they will be entering. It has become increasingly clear that, to continue this commitment, Berklee students must be well versed in computer technology, and specifically, music technology.
Accordingly, beginning in Fall 2003 semester, Berklee College of Music will require all entering students to have an Apple Macintosh laptop computer. The laptop computer must meet certain minimum standards and must be outfitted with a software and hardware package designed to effectively support the first-year music education and coursework of students at Berklee. In addition, students who plan to pursue technology-heavy majors such as Contemporary Writing and Production, Film Scoring, Music Production and Engineering, Music Synthesis, and Songwriting should be aware that these departments will require additional hardware and software components.
Berklee uses Apple Macintosh computers throughout our curriculum because the Macintosh platform is widely used in the music profession and much of the software that supports our curriculum runs exclusively on the Mac platform. We are requiring portable computers, because we expect that students will utilize them in classes and labs. We are also expanding wireless access in public spaces around campus to the Internet, the Berklee library, Berklee online curricula, e-mail, and other services that will enhance the quality of our student?s educational experience.
DO NOT PURCHASE A COMPUTER OR SOFTWARE AT THIS TIME. Computer technology changes at such a rapid pace that we expect Apple Computer to release more powerful models of its Macintosh laptops by the start of Berklee?s Fall semester. Additionally, we are making special arrangements with Apple Computer and music software manufacturers to provide the specific items that support our curriculum at exclusive discount prices to Berklee students. The best prices will be set during the summer.
The required computer and software bundles will be available for purchase through the college during the registration and check-in period prior to the start of Fall classes. More complete details on the minimum required computer hardware and software configurations, as well as the exclusive discount prices will be posted on Berklee?s website ? www.berklee.edu ? in July 2003.
The computer and software purchases qualify for inclusion in federal student loan and financing packages. The exact costs may vary based on the latest hardware and software options at the time of purchase. For the purpose of student federal financial aid, the amount of $2,500 has been included in the ?Cost of Attendance.? Further financial aid information will be provided at the time of aid application.
If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Admissions at (800) 421-0084.
More unubstantiated information has come to light. Some are now suggesting that it well be September before we see these new PB's.
MOSR are even suggesting Panther will not be available to the public until September!. Although Apple have bundled new machines prior to the public release of the packaged OS.
This fits the timeline a little better, with PMacs released June @ WWDC (best guess), with the outside possibility @ Apple special event or 'Create' in July.
Then the 970 PB's could be introduced in September. And no, it most certainly does not make any sense that the 15" would get the 970 whilst the other PB's did not.
Its also likley that the iBooks will continue to use the 750 until IBM provides the 850 (IBM's G4 class processor). Remember, the 750 dissipates just 3.6W @ 800MHz - compared to a 7457 1GHz @ 16W.
In fact the 850's will be great for the iMacs/eMacs as these processors will scale beyond the current limites of the G4's, but inly time will tell.
This could be something, but it's likely nothing...
Could be nothing, but very interesting. I went to the website you linked to, just to verify the bold text and low and behold the text "DO NOT PURCHASE A COMPUTER OR SOFTWARE AT THIS TIME." was in bold type on the website.
Seems that classes begin sometime in September, so computer purchases would occur prior to classes starting, hmm. Interesting.

Hmmmmmm..... (Homer thinking.. )
anyway, of course there will be faster laptops by september. You dont need a MIT (or Berkleey) PhD to predict that. Lapzilla was *introduced* in January, that's 9 months to september, more or less the timeframe used by apple to upgrade their powerbook line.
The question is if the next powerbooks will have 970 inside.
I started this topic only when i realized the 970 was a REAL product, and that its mass-production was closer than we thought. Then it all made sense.
-Year of the laptop.
-Ti15" no changes, still selling and looking well (and booting into 9)
-say hello to Lazpilla and minibook, to entertain the stock market till the 970 is ready (for both desktops and laptops)
wich leads us to
Towers, Lapzilla and new 15,4" alubook with 970 inside by summer end/september (and minibook taking the place of ibooks, which dissapear -aside g3 vs g4 they're THE SAME).
Only problem is, having (guessing) those Great News to all the Mac community, why does Jobs decline to make a speech in MWNY, when he as well could AT LAST made a REAL crunching test with a wintel box and a 970 on stage?
oooooooohhhh!!!
Ok, he says he's tired and stressed by the spotlight, but wouldn't you do it ONCE MORE, if you had those products? (and they don't have to ship inmmediately, we already know that.. )
Its also likley that the iBooks will continue to use the 750 until IBM provides the 850 (IBM's G4 class processor). Remember, the 750 dissipates just 3.6W @ 800MHz - compared to a 7457 1GHz @ 16W.

Please stick to the facts: 3.6W is normal usage. A 7457@1Ghz consumes about 7.5W in normal usage! As the 7457 is higher clocked and has altivec, 7.5W is quite competitive. So don't expect to much from your '850'.
Surely my fellow comrades dont believe the 15" Al PB would be introduced with the 970 now - without new PMacs, Al 12/17's?\
Blackcat\tI think you're right about the 850, but I think it will be called a G4 unless Apple adopts a new scheme:
That was my feeling as well, just as I believe the 970 is most likely to be marketed as a G5 (its 64bit - so why not), Im just making the point the the consumer range will likely replaced with IBM processors, just like the high end.

The 7457EC/D facts provided by me were from Moto - your info is the newer update - apologies, I wasn't aware they had revised the chip.
Ahh, and BTW, what do you expect from Moto's 7457 @ MAX 1.3GHz - woo hoo!
I think you'll find the 850 will be rated similar - only the 850 will scale higher (2G+) than Moto cares to scale its chip, remember its no longer interested in high end desktop computing. Where would you put your money?.
I am however, assuming this 7457 will be used in PB's until the 970, which could well be as soon as the next PB update
Don't forget the 7457 isn't due until Q403, whereas the 970 is due Q303. That's at least a 4, possibly 6 month gap. Plus moto appear to have no calender

...amd you know that you can believe what Moto tells everyone.
Blackcat - I was not aware the 7457's were not shipping?. Which means the current PB's are getting the regular 745x's, damm they could do with 5hr useable life.
Also, the 850's are not due to be announced 'officially' until Q4 03. Plus Moto appear to have no calendar, yeh for what ridicule

Right. The '57 was originally supposed to be shipping by now, but the best laid plans of mice and Mot go aft aglay.
The PBs appear to be using 7455s, except the 12" PB which might be using a 7445.

I'm sure Mr. Jobs wants me to get an awesome bithday gift, if only because of the 14 years i've been praising him and his products/company.

That's taking it a bit to far maybe, but IF the new 15" PB is released in 30 days it will surely not sport the 970.
